Someone certainly needs to be evaluated, but I don't think it is the mother.

Sounds like there is a f*ckton of information not being reported here. Cops don't just randomly take people into mental health custody.

Although it is amusing that they didn't bother searching for the abductee at the abductor's home address.

Actually it sounds like a normal day in the life of a single-parent household.

But yeah, she probably kidnapped the kid.

A tidbit of info from another article:

Karen Joyce was the subject of a DSS investigation and officials decided it was best if Pacen was put under someone else's care.

Agreed. FTA: "The Hoke County Sheriff's Office said Karen Gardner Joyce abducted her son, Pacen Ryan Joyce, from her home at 175 Secretariat Court in Raeford Thursday evening. The Amber Alert was issued around 7:30 p.m."

She abducted the kid from her own home? This makes no sense. Who reported it?

so let me guess....

"Baby daddy" decided to go to "baby mommas" house for one reason or another, sees "baby momma" is not there. "baby daddy" figures "baby momma" is out with "not baby daddy" so "baby daddy" gets mad. "baby daddy" concocts story about how he was supposed to pick up his son at X time and "baby momma" wasn't there and he thinks "baby momma" kidnapped the kid and took him to another state and how crazy she is. Cops have nothing to go on other than "baby daddy's" story, so the issue the amber alert.

Local rick romeros go to the house to check, find the kid happy and safe at home. by this time the cops figure out the whole thing was bullshiat from the get go, but to play it safe they ask her to let the kid stay with a relative for the night, and have her get a mental health screening. "baby momma" agrees. next day she gets her kid back and has a big "you never guess WTF happened to me last night" story to tell her friends.

Totally made up? yup. will it turn out that its mostly true? My gut says yes.

The Hoke County Sheriff's Office said Karen Gardner Joyce abducted her son, Pacen Ryan Joyce, from her home at 175 Secretariat Court in Raeford Thursday evening.

How is this a crime? My mom used to abduct me to the grocery store, school, and many other places if taking your own kid out of your own home for a doctor's visit is a crime.

Meaningless mental evaluations can fark up peoples records.
Step one is figuring out if she had custody, step two is finding the person who called it in.

/Fine reporting there...
/Still, kudos for doing the job that cops can't seem to figure out.

I'd buy this story if the alert hadn't been issued two hours after the mother and child got home from the doctor's office. Either they just didn't check the story, or the baby-daddy reported the "abduction" prior to 5:30, the police visited the home before 5:30, and waited over two hours to issue the alert.

Regardless, seems a little farked up to me.

It sounds to me like maybe she was supposed to be meeting with a child services rep to discuss her custody of the child, and she either left when she wasnt supposed to or just didnt show up. So they issued an alert assuming she was trying to run off with the child to keep it from being seized by the state.

Just a guess, but its my best shot with the info available.

In order for the amber alert to be issued the original claim MUST be investigated. If the original claim is false, the amber alert is invalid. Any actions taken from a false accusation that is not investigated are felonies.

Someone's head at the Sheriff's office is going to be rolling by noon.

Then custody returns to the biological mother on the birth certificate. The fact that she WAS home and had taken the child to the doctor implies that the state is incompetent to be in custody.

WTFF is that? Are you meow-the-dogging shiat, or is it that messed up in the article?

Also: for both biological parents to lose custody (especially the female) they both have to be a massive pair of winners. And bear in mind, 'mental health' screening usually have blood and other drug testing as part of the enrollment process, so they could have simply wanted her to get a full panel drug test cause she was a known addict acting in a suspicious manner.

True dat. I'm also betting they're using custody very loosely here to mean physical custody rather than legal. A mental health evaluation from CPS is pretty standard and usually means "we're digging for shiat to use against you."

Agreed, from how things appear to be laid out.
No where at the top of their to-do list was "contacting the parents to let them know the child is missing".

That's like babysitter 101.

Okay here's what probably really happened.

Parents lost custody of son for one reason or another.
Mother picks up son at school and instead of going home goes to doctors office.
Whoever was supposed to really be picking up kid, shows up at school and finds kid gone. Goes to mother's house, nobody home.
Somebody assumes the mother abducted the kid and issues Amber alert.
Police completely fail in doing any type of followup at all.

Makes more sense than the new report at least.

In her defense, the other boys at school had already taken the cool names like Jacen, Kacen, Aiden, Jaiden, Kaden, Braden, Laden, Naden, Paden, Quaden, Raden, Waden and Zaden.

This sounds like a custody dispute where the courts and social services haven't yet figured out which parent is lying the most, so the kid winds up getting the short end. Meanwhile, law enforcement makes a mockery of the Amber Alert system.

I live in the area, saw this on the news as it unfolded; that's my gut feeling as well. If not the kid's dad, then a grandparent or some such.

The fact that they're so low on information, your second paragraph makes the most sense. Buncha Barney Fifes down there.

Having lived for a brief, terrible moment in Hoke county, I'm going to guess it went more like this:

* parents are massive rednecks/hicks, and police get called to that house all the damn time
* the custody dispute has been ongoing for awhile, and she's only winning because she's ever so slightly less of a hot mess than the daddy
* neither wants custody because of the kid, they want the extra welfare and tax breaks the kid gets them
* mom gave someone the slightest excuse to get her in trouble, so they called the police on something they knew they HAD to act on
* the police are sick of their shiat, so they deliberately overreacted with the Amber Alert, because it triggers all sorts of automatic reviews and conditions
* WRAL got a quiet tip, and decided to get in on the action too
* when this gets before a judge - which is now has to, because of the alert - that judge will have broad authority to clean this mess up
* pacen will still be a redneck with all sorts of adjustment problems, and he'll never get the therapy and help he needs to not grow up to be just like his folks

whistleridge: * neither wants custody because of the kid, they want the extra welfare and tax breaks the kid gets them

Did you watch the video? That mom and son obviously love each other and are extremely attached to one another.

Beyond that there's not enough information on the family at the moment, maybe your other points are valid maybe not. The simple fact that both were at her home, which she supposedly abducted him from, makes me lean more towards the County completely dropping the ball on this one and covering their asses by taking the kid and issuing the evaluation.

Obviously, I didn't RTFA. I was just making up blowhard theories like everyone else :p

But seriously...I did live in Hoke County, and it sucks. Just because my explanation probably doesn't apply this time doesn't mean that it hasn't applied at some point in the recent past. That place is a hot mess of crazy.

Anyone who names their kid Pacen deserves to be locked up.

2012-12-14 01:09:22 PM
Okay, my guess:

Mom picks up kid early from school to take the kid to a doctor's appointment. Either she forgot to inform the school in a note, or the school farks up the paperwork and they think they've lost the kid. School calls cops because a kid is misisng. Cops try to reach the mom but can't, therefore figure "She's taken the kid from school without notice -- must be a kidnapping!" Then Sgt. Keystone finally gets around to issuing the amber alert. CPS thinks wow a mom kidnapped her own kid from herself. She must be crazy!

Oh, no doubt. I've only driven through and stopped at a gas station once, that was enough. I guess I was trying to make a statement that while all of your other points could very well be true, that one about the mom not really wanting the kid was couldn't be true, gathered just by watching their reactions. A bit more has come out in other agencies that suggest an asshole of a biological father trying to fark her world up. In which case, the County still completely dropped the ball.
