viscountalpha: I'm all for more research in curing addictions. I am not in favor of slight gene modifications though. Given that it is proven that a single gene has multiple functions, messing with them without a clear understanding seems risky at best.

Genetically modified food, I'm looking at you.

/seriously, fark you Monsanto

Food has been modified for centuries. Anti science liberalism for the win.

And SCIENCE has proven: buzzed Kari is kind of mean. But drunk Kari is nicer, hilarious, and even hotter.

SCIENCE!

They were going to get Alan Alda drunk on PBS Scientific American Frontiers, but they figured that he wouldn't stop cackling.

Tigger: ArcadianRefugee: Smackledorfer: ArcadianRefugee: simplicimus: Pretty much done in one. But this is true:
Those of you who are skeptical about this and wonder why people with an addiction simply don't cowboy up and quit the booze or drugs are forgetting an important point: this is a disease. Would you tell someone with cancer to simply get a grip and quit that?

When cancer can go into remission by simply not going to the store, I'll agree.

Alcoholism can be overcome by talking to people and having a modicum of willpower; cancer cannot.

Placebo effects work on cancer, so clearly willpower CAN beat it.

Your move.

I don't need to take a placebo for alcoholism; I just need to not drink alcohol.

See, cancer has real symptoms; alcoholism only has real symptoms if you take an active part in their creation.

Placebo effects work on secondary symptoms of cancer like pain. It has absolutely zero effect on the actual growth of tumors.

Not true.

They did this to me years ago on the radio. I was in my cube at teh station I got called to the studio and they asked me if I wanted to get drunk on friday to show kids going to prom not to drink & drive. I got a ride to work from the morning show and started drinking at like 5:30 am, that usually when I finish up. They had the cops there giving me a breathalizer every now and then, I lost track of time after a while. I took tests, played video games, got to be a smartass, it was fun. I did throw up because I mixed too much stuff. Mom was so proud of me that day. Think I got the audio of it on CD somewhere.

I'l guess you have never personally suffered from addiction.

I'm an alcoholic. Been to AA. Etc.

Doh! Looks like someone made a bad guess;)

I'm sorry, you have to find Jesus and submit yourself to him as your lord and savior and that you can never amount to anything without him. And that you are powerless over your addiction?
No. I'm in control of myself, and if I want a scotch, I decide I want to drink it.

Mt brother and dad told me of a time where they were watching one of those late night knife sale shows and I guess the two guys found out they were going to be canned, got loaded on air, wrecked the set during demonstrations and firesaled all of the knives at insanely low prices. Dad still regrets not ordering anything.
