It would have been beamed back "live" anyway, even if there was no earth to receive the signal; it's a non-synchronized transmission. You can't exactly run wireless TCP/IP over a 350 million mile node-gap. Packet verification alone with 3,612,903ms ping...

Well, that wasn't at all an advertorial for a slew of cloud-based computing solutions, not at all....


I did however sympathize with the guy describing the stupid circle jerk of conventional procurement procedures. We still thing that way here and the inefficiency of it is staggering because the two people that most need to speak to each other must always do it through intermediaries with no background in the subject or skin in the game, who invariably garble what's being talked about. Every query or answer becomes a very expensive and time-consuming game of "telephone".

I remember when they launched the thing. Nasa sent around emails asking those of us in the internet industry to please postpone any planned network maintenance that day.

Should be on every cloud offering's home page. This is why cloud services are so popular: they route around the procurement process. People don't talk about it because it's a direct slam on the last bastion of foot-draggers in every IT organization.

Those requirements are approaching trivial, assuming you're talking about SOX, PCI, HIPPA and four-nines uptime. I can't think of a system I've built in the last ten years that wouldn't pass those audits on accident.

While I'm not sure what privacy issues you are referring too, the article says the solution provided by AWS was ITAR compliant so they do have compliance issues that were handled. Also, availability in the cloud is covered but not in a traditional fashion. Look up ROC computing. Rather than trying to stop things from breaking, they take the approach that shiat happens and build software solutions to deal with it. So the system availability may be worse but the application availability is fantastic. It actually takes more work to build a system/application environment like this but the rewards are tremendous.

Times they be a changing and so are the traditional approaches to IT.
