I have a serious love for the Garfield minus Garfield webcomic, and last Sunday's Garfield was set up so perfectly that I couldn't wait for G-G to do it, so I did it myself. I really like it.

For some reason I'm reminded of a Carey Grant line. Some newspaper heard it was his birthday and sent him a telegram asking "How old Carey Grant?", to which he replied "Old Carey Grant fine, how you?"

I don't know why I thought of that.

While I am not a big fan of Garfield anymore, the guy's PAWS empire is something of which I'm quite envious.

The Onion needs to be shut down. It's parodies people and situations - and is therefore humor. Somebody may off themselves.

Garfield may be a pale shadow of its past self and a pure money grab but everything I've heard suggests Davis himself is a cool guy. Wasn't there some webcomic that parodied Garfield and he sent them a framed hand drawn personalised Garfield?

I still have the Garfield with suction cups from twenty years ago. One day I will put it back on my car window.

This is really pushing the bounds of not-news. With all the stuff actually happening in the world someone thought that an article about an article about something that wasn't actually true, was worth writing today.

Holy crap, Internet, Garfield isn't THAT bad. Yes, it's stale and repetitive these days compared to its best years, but when you first create a comic strip, you don't ask yourself if the characters are deep enough to give you 10,000+ strips worth of fresh material.

Go to the archives on Garfield.com and search around randomly through the late 80's - mid 90's to see what Garfield used to be like.

You know you suck as a writer when someone removing the titular character from your work makes it 10x more entertaining.

As dookdookdook above said, try writing a comic about the same group of 2-5 core characters for over 30 years and see how fresh and entertaining you manage to keep it, go ahead, I'll wait.

There was a predecessor to the Garfield Minus Garfield, that I actually liked better, where Garfield was still included but all of his dialogue removed. It actually very much resembled life with a cat; cat sits there for 2 or three panels, then Jon comes out and screams something at the cat, who continues to sit there silently, starting at him for two or three more panels.

Garfield is, by design, not THAT bad, and that's my problem with it. Davis' genius was in calculating the perfect spot of in offensiveness that would be acceptable to everyone.

Schulz took nihilism and made it art; Larson took absurdity and made it art; Watterson took joy and made it art.

Davis took blandness and made it art, but that's not art that I can appreciate like the others.
