Thank you Olympics.

Listened to about a minute of the clip, and she sounds like the Nickelback of pop female vocalists i.e. completely generic.

Wait the long haired cap toothed 40something year old soul singer is now pop?

The Voice? Isn't that the annoying show on TV where those liberal bimbos blather on about how great Obama is?

Good for her, I guess.

Just want to point out that The Voice is not an amateur singing contest... Auditions aren't open, they're by invitation to professional (but unknown) singers and performers. I worked with many of them on college tours.

/but I still don't watch the show.

2012-12-13 01:26:08 PM
Thank fark I now know a tv show is not an amateur singing contest. I had been wondering this for decades.

I don't care, but the headline gave me a great idea: a reality show to find the best pop-and-lock dancers in America.

That's ratings gold. You're welcome, networks.

Just going to say that Amanda Brown had much more talent than Cassadee Pope.

Granted, Domo had more talent than Cassadee

While I abhor reality TV, this is my one guilty RTV pleasure. I think having semi-pro unknowns is the majority of the appeal, I don't really want to hear cats screaching for the delight of making fun of them. I already get my holier-than-thou fix from Fark comment threads.

My only beef with the show is the fact that I have to suffer through witty commentary from Carson Daily, Christina Milian, and Cee-Lo. Adam is tolerable cause he's fairly dickish, Blake seems like a good guy, and I'm in awe of Christina Aguilera. I've a running bet on when she's going to burst out of her skin like Mr Creosote in the Meaning of Life (Monty Python).

That being said, I'm still interested soley cause the Giant Orange Sasquatch is still in it. Seems like a good dude.

And that.

As for the headline - this show was never about "amateur singers." The first season had all sorts of people who were in bands, who had toured, but who just hadn't "broken out."

The second season was won by a guy who admitted right during his audition that he was a background singer for Alicia Keys and was trying to make it as a headliner rather than background.

I'm not sure why folks expect "amateurs" on The Voice. If you want amateurs, go to the Fox singing shows (and even there you get professionals.)

Probably has something to do with the fact that people think "reality" shows aren't scripted.

Or the Olympics.

Cassadee? Any relation to Quendra?

2012-12-13 02:27:37 PM
As someone who actually watches The Voice, on and off, it's very common for the contestants to have been part of an active band. In fact, in the final four (now down to three, but I don't know who was eliminated) I think all but one had performed in clubs or at events previously.

I think Pope is a good singer. That said, I'm rooting for the two old white guys: the Uberhipster Soul Man and the Irish Rock-Ballad Belter. They're solid singers, especially the Uberhipster, and I like the songs they and their coaches pick.

Then why are you reading the entertainment tab?

2012-12-13 02:32:28 PM
The Voice has been pretty entertaining. Like others, I profess to not be into this sort of thing, but I love good covers of good songs and, while many of these aren't fantastic, they're often interesting.

But by the end you're left with the glossy pablum of what the teeny-boppers love. Amanda was great, but she picked songs most of the audience doesn't know. The Scottish guy sings karaoke versions of 80s standards and has somehow survived. At least the soulful white dude from Minnesota, of all places, is an interesting guy and singer.

2012-12-13 02:36:42 PM
I wanted Trevin Hunte to win since I thought he had the best audition and he just got better from then on.

Maybe Cee-Lo's song selections cost him the win but I'm sure he has a future in the business even if he didn't win.

2012-12-13 02:39:08 PM
I tend not to watch reality shows, but The Voice is reasonably entertaining. I like that the judges are really nice to the contestants, even though it sometimes comes across as forced. Other shows, especially in the audition phase, are so cruel and exploitative. I turned on The X Factor out of curiosity, and the first thing they did was follow around some overconfident weirdo with no real talent. "Ha-ha!" they say, "Look at how oblivious he is! Bet you can't wait for the judges to tell him he should kill himself!"

No thanks.

2012-12-13 02:53:08 PM
Like apparently a large number of people here, I am not a reality TV fan, but will watch the voice from time to time. I like that even the "bad" performances tend to be fairly decent. The coaches seem to give constructive criticism, and don't seem to get reviled for not fawning all over the fan favorite. Or maybe that just gets edited out. Don't know, don't care.

2012-12-13 02:58:14 PM

It's awesome that it worked for him but let's stop pretending that we can create a climate in which we get lots of different music out of lots of musicians by stealing it and then expecting that they'll make a living doing commercials.

For god's sake, stop the stupid torrenting and just pay Spotify the $10 a month.

That's why I watch The Voice as well, it isn't schadenfreude city and there are some spectacular performances regularly. I'm a singer and it works for me. I like that the coaches really bond with their teams and actually help them get work regardless of win/loss on the show (look at RaeLynn or Chris Mann). Plus every once in a while you get to hear Christina Aguilera sing and she is amazing, enough to make her normal biatchiness tolerable.

Personally, I was satisfied once Dez "So Hot but So Ordinary" Durant got the boot. Cassadee is super-skilled but never moves me, so I'm happy to see that St. Nick has made it to the finals.

She's boring as fark. I hope Terry wins. I like Nick, but they keep giving him old, boring songs. I wish they would've done a little with him what they did with Melonie (the two-color hair girl, whatever her name was). I would like to see him sing newer music or music in a different style than what he's used to.
