Probably just dropping out the back of a plane.

On the one hand, that seems stupid. I wonder if he is doing this because he expects defeat, and by using up his military resources he will bankrupt the rebels when they have to rebuild the Syrian stockpiles?

I'm guessing he has limited access to his military hardware.

Between this and the use of the "Not particularly useful against an insurgency" scud missiles I have to assume what's going on at Syrain army HQ is something along the lines of:
"Fark, the Russians won't re-supply us and the rebels are gaining ground, go look in the back and see what we've got left to fight them with"
"Well I found these old sea mines and a bock of c-rations"
"Fine, use the mines, I kinda like the canned peaches in the c-rats"

2012-12-13 12:08:16 PM
That's nothing. I launched a few million seamines earlier today while surfing porn.

2012-12-13 12:08:48 PM
At this rate, the Syrian army won't be overrun by the rebels they'll jut run out of bullets to shoot at them with.

Attacks by invading rebel fleets are the least of his worries. The sea mines are therefore useless unless they can be repurposed. Looks like he found a purpose.

He's dropping them from planes.

I wonder if this means he's running out of conventional bombs, maybe the quartermaster f*cked up, or that they're just crazy like that.

To clarify: No plasma torpedoes, out of phaser power, still have a tractor beam, Klingon enemy ship attacking, outside the box solution? Obviously: Reverse the tractor beam and load the cargo of seamines.

Subby has reading comprehension problems; the article clearly says Syrian forces are dropping unguided naval mines on the rebels from his planes.

Along with incendiary cluster bombs, normal bombs, and firing Scud missiles (so far the HE version, not poison gas types) at them as well.

Well, duh. First you drop the high explosives, then the incendiaries. That's how you get a firestorm.

Interestingly, US aircraft dropped depth charges on land gun positions during the N.African landings...turns out they worked just fine.

This IS probably more of a desperation move by Syria, of course.

I would bet that Russia's "existing military supply contracts" have recently ran into a previously unknown expiration clause that seems to exist in all of Russia's copies of the contracts, and all of Syria's copies have been somehow lost and/or burned in freak electrical fires.

Without a steady supply of new munitions, and with the rebels continuing to raid military bases and steal all of their stuff, Assad is running out of weapons. And without Russian support, he knows he's farked because the rebels are being supplied by the Sauds and Qataris.

It seems like a safe bet that he's probably starting to run out of traditional options.

"Yep, we call them land sea mines."

I bet their was a SNAFU when they ordered them. They wanted 500 50# land mines and they got 50 500# sea mines. And Russia has a steep reshelving fee, sooo...

They were talking about this on NPR yesterday. The Syrian military is dropping them, along with improvised bombs, out of helicopters and cargo planes.

On the other hand, attach a parachute to it and the sea mine will detonate when it hits the ground, sending shrapnel everywhere instead of creating a crater. Pretty nontraditional.

You've got some pretty bad aim if you soak your keyboard. Either that or you removed some keys and go at it American Pie style.
