I would like it much better if I could get from Cleveland to Detroit without going through Chicago...

/Seattle to Vancouver is a nice ride, though

wildcardjack: I tried getting the Amtrak site to get me from Dallas to Seattle and it suggested I walk.

That's really not the kind of trip a train is suited for. Portland to Seattle on a train is good, on a plane is bad. Dallas to Seattle, a plane is good, a train is bad. Just like San Diego to Los Angeles on a train is good, on a plane is bad. New York to Los Angeles a plane is good, a train is bad.

Just think, there are different modes of travel most appropriate to the distance needed to be travelled. What a concept!

I've taken the AMTRAK from San Diego to Orange County at least a 100 times. It hugs the coast,an awesome ride. They still have one train from the '80's(or cars). It is the most uncomfortable ride. They still have ashtrays on the back of the seats.I see it pass thru Encinitas all the time.

Stupid duchey website processed all its photos with instagram

They do look like Instagram. Funny how the photographer laments how poor the pictures look due to lack of care.

Apparently, the ability to make poor quality photos is worth a cool billion these days.

The worst part is looking at older pictures like these and not realizing that they're dated at first because you've seen so much filtered crap don't even notice it.

that was great...

I do!

Also, I've had good experience on Amtrak business class-I enjoy watching the coastline go by as I listen to music.

Why drive when you can take the train.... for 8x the cost and 12x the time!

Nobody in Europe does that kind of distance on trains either.

I took a day trip from Boston to NYC the other day. My daughter got to facetime with her mother while I sat back and had a 90 minute Dogfish IPA. Got to the train stations about 15 minutes before it was scheduled to leave, had wifi and 120V outlets at the seat, and it wasn't a whole lot more expensive and probably about equal in time for flying from Logan to JFK.

Way back when, I rode the Coast Starlight a lot between Oakland and Santa Barbara. For a while they were using the old Southern Pacific passenger cars. Comfy and roomy seats.

Once I stuck my head out the Dutch door while the thing was whizzing up the flatlands between King City and San Jose. Lucky for me a pebble didn't hit me in the head.

Frankly, it was nice to just sit back and look at the scenery instead of the road.

Enthusiastic "meh." Probably not as exciting almost forty years later.

You've got two problems. 1. You're in Dallas. 2. You want to go to Seattle.

Somebody in Houston, Austin, or San Antonio would probably tell you the same things.

Depends where you're going. Heading to NYC from where I am would take almost as long, and cost almost as much in tolls, alone.
