calm like a bomb: capnmonkey: Even talking to other fans that I consider pretty normal, reasonable people, they get upset about the one-and-done recruiting philosophy, and point out things like "Duke doesn't recruit em!" whilst Kyrie Irving and Austin Rivers laugh in the background.

As a Duke fan, I completely agree with you. It's ridiculous to suggest Krzyzewski wouldn't have found a way to get Nerlens Noel a scholarship if he wanted to play for Duke, even knowing he's a one and done. It was obvious Kyrie Irving didn't need to and wasn't going to stay, and only morons fault him for it.

/Austin Rivers, OTOH, shouldn't have left
//A great first step isn't worth much if you then throw it into the third row half the time

Yeah, it's hard to say, he wen't 10th overall, I guess the question would be where would he go this year? Last years draft was overloaded with guys who in part stayed for their sophmore year because of the lockout. Just glancing at early mock drafts for this year, he could've moved up to 7 or so with another year to develop.

But, wow, Duke would be really good this year with him and the unquestionable favorite to win it all.

I was surprised he left, frankly. He doesn't need the money, and I figured daddy has evaluated enough talent in his time to tell his stock would only go up in another year. I was also very, very surprised he got taken that highly. He's a serviceable project at this point, which his seven points a game shows (Irving, OTOH, got 18.5 his rookie year). And yes, there is a little bit of disappointment there, as Duke would have been a lock this year. Can you imagine if both Rivers and Irving decided to get their degrees? Put that with Curry, Kelly, and Plumlee, and they run anyone out of the gym.

Austin's "daddy" also knows that his son will make almost as much on his rookie contract as he made in his entire NBA career. Stop being selfish, he wouldn't have gone in the draft if he didn't know he was going in the lottery.

He could have made more had he stuck around another year. But whatever. I have zero problem with the kids getting paid. Wistful thinking, not sour grapes.

As I recall, Drew prefers this one. Lays out the drama better, since you can see the score.

Or he could have shredded his ACL and gotten nothing. Of course we're dealing with a fanbase that vilified Elton Brand for leaving school early, so it's to be expected.

Yeah, we all got together at Satisfaction to write that email. "Jennifer Taylor" was just a pseudonym for an entire fan base.

babysealclubber: trololol.

It's a poll of Kentucky residents, which do include fans of other schools and people don't even like college basketball. Let's look at it this way, only 15% responded with an unfavorable opinion (According to the same poll, Louisville fans make up 17% of the state).

And of those 15%, maybe some people don't think winning is the only thing, and they value the integrity of the progr.....

OK, I couldn't get through that without laughing.

But yeah. 49-15 is a pretty good ratio.

Coach_J: Coach_J: Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: He'll get them pretty deep into the Tournament, because he's a good game coach.

You had me until this one...I couldn't disagree more. They will go deep into the tournament because they will "out-talent and out-defend" 85% of the teams in the tourney.

He can get them to play great team D and the size, speed and talent he recruits almost ensures a good offense with his DDM system...but I've never watched a Calipari-coached make 2nd half adjustments with a damn.

Great recruiter and motivator...absolutely..."good game coach"...completely disagree.

Sorry to quote myself...but remember the title game meltdown with Kansas? That was some of the worst game coaching I've ever seen. He completely gagged.

Ouch, that still hurts to think about...

Why do all the Duke fans and/or UK haters live in the past with "the shot?" Most UK fans I know are more annoyed with trolls trying to get a rise than they are from the actual shot. UK got their revenge in 98. Laettner has shown to be a good sport about the whole thing. As far as I'm concerned, it's water under the bridge.

I wonder what that number will look like when Cal inevitably resigns in disgrace and UK has to vacate last year's title and forces the program to fall into a distant third or fourth place in the all-time wins race.

/most corrupt college sports team throughout history, and it's not even close

And I'm sure you said the same thing last year about the final four team and the year before that about the elite 8 team.

UK fans by far are not over it. Seriously.

12349876: let's see who lost to farking Lehigh last year. And who couldn't hold a 17 point 2nd half lead in the 1998 elite 8.

And who lost to the #10 seed in Charlotte in 1997. Can't forget that one. That's the one that gave us the Gillen quote.

\I mention I was there more than Leave It To Beaver reruns, so you might know this already
\\best farking game I saw in my life, even better than the time I almost passed out freshman year screaming at the UConn game

It's mostly from the UK side. Duke fans remember it as a great moment, but really, the only place we give much of a shiat about UK is on Fark, and only then because it's fun to tease hillbillys.

Being a UK fan from eastern Kentucky and living in Lexington makes me pretty qualified to make that statement. I'm more annoyed about the opposition trying to make a big deal out of it. It's over, let it go.

I agree, it's a great moment in college bball history. But it's not so much "the shot" as "the stomp."

And it's Appalachian American to you, bud.

I loathed Laettner for awhile, then he goes and does stuff like this...

jake_lex: UK fans should get used to this, given the way Calipari recruits. He's going to go out and get the best recruits out there, who all plan on going to the NBA as soon as possible. So he has very little time to mold them into a team. When it works, you get last year. But if it doesn't work, you might end up with this year.

I would also like to mention (on your great comment) that last year's team was not full of freshmen. They had some returning players like Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb, Darius Miller that were more than just "bit" players in that Championship run.

I would also like to add that the team before the championship team lost a bunch of games and went to the final four. The more than "bit" players came from that team. Not bad for a bunch of freshman to be a couple points away from playing for a national championship (but come on, we all knew the winner of that game was winning it all).

Hell, the team full of freshman before that went to the elite 8. It took a weird, and their worst game of the season to miss the final 4. West Virginia didn't make a single 2 point field goal in the 1st half.

The point is, it's too early to tell if "it" has worked or not this season. We'll know in March.
