Public posturing or possible stalemate? Continued sniping by both sides in the fiscal cliff negotiations shows little movement on the core issue - higher taxes on the wealthy.

the right wing pundits are mad as hell about Obama's plans to raise taxes on the 1%. the blog-o-dome has been crying about how horrible taxes on the rich would be for life, the universe and everything. rants about communism, socialism, and retribution from God...apparently raising taxes on the wealthy means this country is going to go tits up and die within a week.

suffice to say, this idea is very unpopular with the right wing.

Whiners. If my taxes go up next year (not a top 2% er) I'll know precisely who to blame.

The fiscal cliff is the only way they're going to do anything about the deficit.

We cannot raise taxes on the rich because that will only raise revenues by 80 billion dollars. Instead, we must cut Planned Parenthood funding to save ourselves 200 million dollars.

But, they compromised by just showing up to talking with the Kenyan Usurper! Why Won't the Democrats give up anything from their end!

Meanwhile DoD contractors are still guaranteed their non-competitive R&D funding despite massive over budget projects netting zero results. Because the GOP are by no means the root cause of crony capitalism and government corruption in the free market.

2012-12-13 09:30:36 AM
Heh... Too bad for the the GOP taxes are going up on the wealthy whether they like it or not.

Then they'll find themselves faced with a Democratic proposed bill that cuts taxes for those making under $250,000.

Are they stupid enough to vote against something like that? You bet your sweet ass they are.

2012-12-13 09:30:59 AM
Here's the problem, GOP. The Bush era tax cuts have already been voted away and you voted in favor of doing that. What you're now asking is that everyone vote for them to be restored. The president is offering 98% of that and you should take it and be grateful.

"The American people are not going to be under the illusion that the Republicans are sometime in the future going to come up with revenue," Reid said. "They are going to come up with raising the rates" or "we are going over" the fiscal cliff.

Wow... was that Harry Reid sounding... dare I say it?... tough?

Or the NEA to save $150 million. Or NPR and PBS to save ourselves $50 million. Or insert any other token tiny government spending program to save ourselves something in the millions of dollars.

And when tons of poor babies are born in the next couple of years and they all go on Medicaid and our spending on that triples, what then, sunshine? Cut Medicaid and let the babies get sick and die?

2 weeks until Obama wins this whole debate. I'm surprised that Republicans aren't going into more of a panic. I can't imagine Adelson, Koch, and the like are going to be thrilled by their lack of success between the election and this whole tax issue.

Oh boy it's going to just kill the shiatting on platinum toilets level rich folks to pay a tax rate less than the Reagan era.

Shut the fark up and contribute to America for a change. Or get the fark out.

And if you do get the fark out, take trump and the kochs with you. You can have a herpaderpy circle jerk, and if the world is lucky, all somehow due of autoerotic asphyxiation.

Republicans oppose the return to higher rates, saying it will inhibit job growth because small business owners declare their profits as personal income and therefore would face a tax increase.

And they are absolutely correct. Raising taxes on small businesses will cause them not to hire workers whose labor would lead to increased profits as compared to not hiring them. Or at least it would for those small business owners who hire accountants to keep their income at exactly $249,999 a year because adding that extra dollar will bump them into the next tax bracket and result in them making less money.

If you do that out of spite, you aren't much of a business man. If you NEED to do that, it is unlikely that the tax increase was actually going to be effecting your income. It's pretty hard to believe that you are making over 250k (after deductions) and have to lay someone off to stay in business.

No one cares about your stupid sh*tty business. I'm convinced that 99% of people claiming they are small business owners sold baked goods at their kid's school and therefore feel the need to talk about how they are going to make Rice Krispie treats 1.25 instead of 1.00 next year, because f*ck those poor kids.

Silly me. I'm a business owner myself, and my solution to dealing with slightly higher taxes is to keep improving the efficiency of my office and quality of my services, so more people to choose my firm to resolve their problems.

But yeah... maybe your idea of milking customers for more money and reducing the number of people making your product might work. You go with that.

My favorite was the guy who claimed to own some bussing service and blamed Obama because it was going to cost him more, then over the course of the conversation it turned out the guy had something like 3-5 previously failed businesses. Yeah I'm sure Obama was responsible for all of those too.

Yes, because the economy during the 90s is exactly the same as it is now. I am sure the budget right now could totally be gutted of monetary policy measures and not create another recession. And your mom is also as hot as Jessica Biel.

Which either will:

a. Decrease your overall income as your productivity declines and people choose other products or
b. Increase your income, thus requiring you to pay more taxes, which you will then offset by punishing your workers or your consumers.

Neither outcome seems all that. . . well, smart.

Because the best way to deal with a small increase in costs is to do the most likely things that will further hurt your bottom line?

Economics doesn't work in a vacuum, genius. You charge as much as people are willing to pay. If that's more than it costs to make the product, you make a profit. If the margin between the two shrinks, you find ways to make your process more efficient while still keeping the product at a price where the same number of people buy them. Guess what? "Just charging more" means you push away customers who were willing to buy your product at the previous price but not at the higher one.

2012-12-13 09:55:34 AM
You can't "pass costs down to consumers".

What you can do, is charge more when consumers have more money to spend.

Consumers drive the economy, not producers.

Right. But republicans don't actually believe in open markets or competition or quality products. I mean, these are the supposed job creators, that moved 99% of American manufacturing to the third world so they could continue to make products with slave labor sized margins.

Why? Because their taxes went down. Continually, for the last 30 years.

Really just imagine to yourself what decision Sauron would make. In 100% of examples, it will be exactly the Republican choice. In regards to world issues, politics, family life, work. You name it. I have yet to discover a situation where it isn't true.
