Implying that cooking is gender-specific to females is not only sexist, it's asinine in today's world. Chances are your son isn't going to marry a nice girl to cook & clean for him right out of high school. He probably needs to at least know his way around the kitchen a little bit (unless he just wants to eat fast food all the time, be morbidly obese and dead by 45).

When I was a little boy I think my parents were concerned that I was obsessed with a doll house I found in the basement. I loved the miniature furniture (had no use for the dolls). They replaced it by getting me into miniature trains, which I also loved. Still turned out gay as the day is long but God bless them, they tried.

Can't find a link to it online, but someone in our Ag dept did an interesting cook-off.
Had males and females cook meals (of their own choice) and get rated by others who ate the food.
Then the Ag guys took a 12 oz sample meal from each cook, and tested it for nutrients, etc.

The results were that both genders did fine in the 'taste' dept,
but sadly the males produced meals with too much salt, too much fat, not enough fiber, and low on basic nutrients...

...Which sounds like a typical 'chef-made' restaurant meal in the U.S.

/made me laugh b/c that's been exactly my own experience... my guy can cook up a great tasting protein, but sucks at making a balanced meal.

I mean why do you need an easy bake these days? They sell cake, cookie, and muffin mixes where you add 1-3 ingredients, pour in a pan, and bake. Pretty damn easy.

I don't know... America could use more ovens that can only bake one cookie at a time.

I was genuinely surprised when I saw that. I was also surprised that Hasbro has it listed on their site as "toys for girls." It's as if nobody in their marketing dept has paid much attention to pop culture for the past 5-10 years, and their unaware of whole "foodie" thing. Most of the serious cooks/foodies I know are dudes. Of my female friends, several are entirely ambivalent about cooking. It just doesn't interest them.

Also agree that any proper man or woman should be able to cook. If you try, if you work on it just a little then you will be able to cook at least a few meals. If you're a bachelor/ette then it helps you not get fat and save money. If you're in a couple, then it helps you help out the other person. People share household chores and that is fine, but there are going to be times when one of you is sick, has to work late, etc. and needs help from the other- that is why you are even in a relationship.

I hate when dudes or women say 'I don't do ____.' and think that is an okay excuse for forcing the chore on their SO.

I get that. I am trying to decouple the idea that 'pink clothes=gay' by pointing out that there is no intrinsic link between the two. My point is that at most, some people use fashion to express their orientation, but that this likely not the case here. I am actually agreeing with people who are saying that this is no big deal, while still acknowledging the reasons why some people associate certain fashion with orientation (note: correlation does not equal causation).

I've never had an Easy Bake Oven; I was never interested. I always thought it was just another overpriced POS toy. I have 5 boys, and they're all learning how to cook with an *actual* oven. I'm no pro chef by any stretch, but they know how to make basic things and follow a recipe.

The only issue is that he needs to understand that there will likely be peer feedback from making a non-traditional decision. She gave him that information, he made his choice. This is how accountability and responsibility is taught. Don't just beat down your kids into accepting your edicts as canon, but let them (within reason) make their decisions based on an understanding of the consequences.

Mr. Toadcheese: Easy-Bake ovens are crap. Teach your kids about real cooking; my cousin had her daughter help her make Christmas cookies this year, and the kid's still in preschool.

This. Instead of getting your kids a piece of pink plastic with a light bulb, spend some time teaching them how to cook, using real appliances.

CSB: When my sister and I were kids, my parents decided that it would be a good thing for us to learn to cook, and so during summer vacation, they had us plan and cook one family dinner each week. Ground rules were that the meals needed to be balanced, couldn't be repeated week after week, and needed to be something you actually cooked (i.e. no frozen pizza). Not only did we learn to cook, but other important stuff like reading a recipe and figuring out what ingredients needed to go on the shopping list.

More parents should do this sort of thing.

I rode my older sisters BRIGHT PINK WITH FLOWERS, BANANA SEAT, AND SISSY BAR BIKE (which is about as gay as you can get) and I'm practically a homophobe! That, plus the fact that girls nowadays LOVE it when guys can cook. My girlfriend is an outstanding cook, and she loves to do it (which is great for me!), but even she likes that I can make her something if she's tired/stressed/not feeling well. If you're raising your sons to not know how to cook, you're really making dating and getting married more challenging for them.

I forced myself to learn how to cook in my mid twenties out of necessity, and eventually learned that I find it quite enjoyable. I got tired of eating junk (frozen pizza, fast food burger places, hot pockets, little debbie snacks, and so on) and decided I missed a nice home cooked meal.

Mum made sure I had at least one recipe under my belt before I left home. Being a chemist helped as well, since cooking is basically kitchen chemistry. (Disclaimer: I actually fairly terrible in the lab.)

I've found it amusing that the sexist idea of a male cook, which has been around for quite a while, is suddenly found acceptable if they're a professional chef. Put a fancy hat on them, and increase their technical skill in cooking and suddenly it's 'okay' for a man to be in the kitchen.

Not only that, once they get their funny hat and their chromed ovens, suddenly women aren't allowed to play anymore. Only a woman can cook for her family, but only a man can get paid to cook for strangers.
