Why wouldn't a chef want to encourage learning to cook with a legitimate oven?

I actually had an Easy-Bake oven when I was little. I'm not sure if my mom just thought boys should know how to cook, or if she expected her second child to be a girl.

I used it a couple of times, but I had a lot more fun with the 75-in-1 electronic experiments kit that my grandfather gave me.

then I saw the food.

Can't find a link to it online, but someone in our Ag dept did an interesting cook-off.
Had males and females cook meals (of their own choice) and get rated by others who ate the food.
Then the Ag guys took a 12 oz sample meal from each cook, and tested it for nutrients, etc.

The results were that both genders did fine in the 'taste' dept,
but sadly the males produced meals with too much salt, too much fat, not enough fiber, and low on basic nutrients...

...Which sounds like a typical 'chef-made' restaurant meal in the U.S.

/made me laugh b/c that's been exactly my own experience... my guy can cook up a great tasting protein, but sucks at making a balanced meal.

My two boys said they want an EZ bake for xmas, I was going to grab thier older sisters old one from the attic and hit it with some hi temp krylon black. Couldnt find one for boys online.

Also agree that any proper man or woman should be able to cook. If you try, if you work on it just a little then you will be able to cook at least a few meals. If you're a bachelor/ette then it helps you not get fat and save money. If you're in a couple, then it helps you help out the other person. People share household chores and that is fine, but there are going to be times when one of you is sick, has to work late, etc. and needs help from the other- that is why you are even in a relationship.

I hate when dudes or women say 'I don't do ____.' and think that is an okay excuse for forcing the chore on their SO.

I get that. I am trying to decouple the idea that 'pink clothes=gay' by pointing out that there is no intrinsic link between the two. My point is that at most, some people use fashion to express their orientation, but that this likely not the case here. I am actually agreeing with people who are saying that this is no big deal, while still acknowledging the reasons why some people associate certain fashion with orientation (note: correlation does not equal causation).

I've never had an Easy Bake Oven; I was never interested. I always thought it was just another overpriced POS toy. I have 5 boys, and they're all learning how to cook with an *actual* oven. I'm no pro chef by any stretch, but they know how to make basic things and follow a recipe.

The only issue is that he needs to understand that there will likely be peer feedback from making a non-traditional decision. She gave him that information, he made his choice. This is how accountability and responsibility is taught. Don't just beat down your kids into accepting your edicts as canon, but let them (within reason) make their decisions based on an understanding of the consequences.

I had this "easy bake oven" when I was a kid, and it kicked ass.

Mr. Toadcheese: Easy-Bake ovens are crap. Teach your kids about real cooking; my cousin had her daughter help her make Christmas cookies this year, and the kid's still in preschool.

This. Instead of getting your kids a piece of pink plastic with a light bulb, spend some time teaching them how to cook, using real appliances.

CSB: When my sister and I were kids, my parents decided that it would be a good thing for us to learn to cook, and so during summer vacation, they had us plan and cook one family dinner each week. Ground rules were that the meals needed to be balanced, couldn't be repeated week after week, and needed to be something you actually cooked (i.e. no frozen pizza). Not only did we learn to cook, but other important stuff like reading a recipe and figuring out what ingredients needed to go on the shopping list.

More parents should do this sort of thing.

That, plus the fact that girls nowadays LOVE it when guys can cook. My girlfriend is an outstanding cook, and she loves to do it (which is great for me!), but even she likes that I can make her something if she's tired/stressed/not feeling well. If you're raising your sons to not know how to cook, you're really making dating and getting married more challenging for them.

They need to make sewing machines targeted at men. Early on in our marriage, I asked my wife if she would hem my pants. She had no clue what I was talking about.
