That you probably actually believe this is sad. Only white fundamentalist republican Americans work hard amirite.

You are what's wrong with the world.

It is interesting how you try to turn a purely political statement into one based on race and religion. When did Bullseyed say anything about white people or their religion?
Do you hear the word "Lazy" and you instantly think of non-white people?
If you do, you might want to consider the fact that you are being racist...just saying.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Lionel Mandrake: brap: Does this mean I can stop pretending I'm Canadian when I'm overseas?

Heh...reminds me of when I was in Salzberg, sitting in a little restaurant having a beer (they rented rooms upstairs) and these Canadians were talking to some locals about how loud and obnoxious Americans are. They just kept complaining, very loudly...on and on and on... They were quite oblivious to how loud and obnoxious they were being.

I had a similar experience on a train to Berlin. A Canadian girl was going on and on, quite loudly about how "Canada was the best, America sucks" every other sentence out of her mouth was about Canada. You get obnoxious people from every country. It just tends to be easier to pick out the obnoxious ones who speak a language you know.

Also, if you are in Europe and someone tells you they are Canadian, and you suspect they are American, just ask them for the capital of Canada. 95% of Americans don't know it is Vancouver and will say something stupid like "Toronto"

US obesity would proabbyl be even more jarring coming from asia than it would be freom W. Europe. I personally think some western european countries are nearly as fat as the US is... lots of fat brits and germans now.

the thing i notice now when going back is how outdated and backwards the infrastructure seems, and how ugly most american cities are. Patchy potholed roads, powerlines everywhere...

youd think with storm after storm and power outages to millsion year after year the US could not buy a few bombers once and invest in burying the utility lines in the metropolitan areas above a certain population density.

but lets not forget, govt investing in its own country is "socialism" but investing in foreign country's infrastructure is "spreading democracy"

There are certainly aspects of American 'culture' sneaking into our day to day life here in Ireland. When I was a kid, at Halloween, we used to say 'penny for the puca' and say a rhyme, now a lot of kids just say 'trick or treat', this is especially sad as it's a Celtic/Irish festival. Also, a lot of teenagers have started talking with that horrible Californian inflection? As for people saying 'movies' instead of 'films', don't get me started...

And last but not least, there are a lot more obese people.

wtf is "becoming more european" anyways? Are germans like the italians? are the italians like the british? has this author even been to europe for more than 3 day phototrip in front of the eifel tower? do these countries have common values and viewpoints on the metrics mentioned in the articles?

But lets just take this faulty assumption of uniformity at face value: i'll say no. even the americans on the blue coasts who admire what one could loosely call "european values" and support in theory things that middle class western europeans generally take for granted (universal health care, organized labor, good cities, public transportation, job security, dont mind taxes for programs which help the poor etc) most of the US only has a very superficial understanding of the things beyond their borders.

indeed, this article is a great example of that, lumping all europe into one big homogenous glob. (dont worry tho, they understand us just as poorly)

in short, this articles very premise is trying to make huge generalizations on a few statistics, and thus sucks and isnt worth the read.

Europe consists of mostly smallish ethno-states. The US is a superstate, with states as large as countries in terms of GDP. And a mish-mash of ethnicities.

Europe is trying to evolve into a United States of Europe with the European Union. But... being ethno-states with storied histories and a history of war and competition with each other, as well as being distinct cultures and ethnicities... they may have put the cart before the horse.

It's popular to think of Europeans as homogeneous, and thus naturally should be one country, but they're really not.

Which party said "you're either with us or you're against us" in the weeks after 9/11, started an illegal war that killed over 100,000 people, and then had the sheer gall to hypocritically biatch about extrajudicial killings when Osama bin Laden got what the entire world thinks he deserved?

Which party thinks that four people being killed in Benghazi under Obama's watch far outweighs the dozens of people who were killed by terrorist attacks on US embassies during Bush's watch? Not to mention the 3000 people who died on American soil on 9/11.

Which party destroyed America's global reputation by going on about "Freedom Fries" and other assorted bullshiat while it put "Mission Accomplished" banners on aircraft carriers after they'd attacked a country that never attacked the US?

Which party wants to teach creationism in schools?

Some Brittish slang is just bizarre to me. Not that I don't understand where the terms come from (usually), but in the actually choosing to use that word to describe that thing.

For example, torch. Why call a flashlight a torch? I get that the former serves the same function as the latter, but they're very different. Why not have a new word for a new thing?

I don't care what slang they use and I don't tell them that they're wrong for it. Different cultures do their own thing. Right on. But some of their slang is just odd to me. Aussie slang is even more head scratching.

Dotn get me started about yanks who think theyre „german" or „irish" or „french" because their surname traces back to that culture generations ago and some stupid cultural stereotype applies.

"oh I have redhair and an o'(something) in my family tree, IM IRISH!"
"oh my last name is Jaeger and I have blonde hair, I'm GERMAN!"
"oh im hot blooded and lose my temper because im a sicilian!"

SO. STUPID.

I've lived 6 years or so of my life abroad mostly in Germany and Switzerland. And I gotta tell you NOTHING makes you more aware of how much you are a product of your own culture and will never be completely part of one youre not raised in like living in a foreign one. Ive become more in tune with my California-ness over the past several years than I ever did in California where I was surrounded by people who were just like me.

These freakin' pricks who have a bratwurst at a tourist trap in munich and learn to say "noch ein Bier bitte" and think they got in touch with their Opa's heritage, or like that guy I saw in Ireland... man these people are dumber than dumb. Its painful.

(goes the other way too of course... a german woman I recently was cornered by at a party told me in way too much detail about how she got lip from an African American woman on a bus and confided in me how she now totally understands the complexities of American race relations)

The irish bring halloween to the us. we add our own spin to it, then ship it back to ireland.

Don't like it? Don't starve out half your population next time.

Also, a lot of teenagers have started talking with that horrible Californian inflection? As for people saying 'movies' instead of 'films', don't get me started...

And last but not least, there are a lot more obese people.

Wait, you mean, like, people? In Ireland? Are starting to talk like this? And do they say Theeeeeenking instead of proper irish "tinking"?

whatever brah.

Dats rite!

youre missing some h's.

i love that about Irish English.

As overheard in a bar in Dublin, between a Dub an American "heritage tourist" who proclaimed his irishness in an appalling e. coast American accent:

"Whaht's dhaht shiate comin ouht yer gob hey. whot, yer grans from cork and you spend tree days drunk in temple bar ahn suddenly yer a feckin expert on ireland?" (takes sip of pint) "gobshiate yankee muppet. "

good times.

It goes both ways. The younger generation in the US uses a lot of outdated British-English colloquialisms because of pop cultural cross pollination.

I actually would like to hear you out on this, because I don't understand the complaint. I use them interchangeably, unless the work is educational, in which case it's exclusively "film".

What does "superior culture" mean? In other words, superior to whom? It's obvious that cultures where women are put in burqas and gays are stoned to death are inferior, but the question doesn't specify that.

I think they keep polling the same people over and over. I realize they take samples and attibute it to the whole but in 37 years on this planet I don't recall ever being asked to patricipate in a poll randomly. I mean random as in not counting leaving some kind of venue where everyone is offered or doing something like a product or services survey after spending some money. Everytime I see some kind of poll result that lumps up the entire country I see that B/W picture of a man holding up the newspaper declaring Dewy winning the presidency in my head.

We're not like liberals. We typically just disagree with people politically and don't launch in to sexism or racism at the drop a hat.

If you want to see sexism, be a woman that disagrees with a liberal.

If you want to see racism, be a minority that disagrees with a liberal.

If you want to see homophobia, be a homosexual that disagrees with a liberal.

MEH
A state can secede from the Union EXACTLY the same way the colonies seceded from mother England.

DECLARATION!

It is not a question of legality. It was illegal for the colonies to Secede, yet they did it any way.
Staying free is always the trick.

Try the shiat soup.

Sure, the flavor sucks, but it really sticks to your ribs.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever read on Fark. I should know, I am the expert on this site when it comes to moranity.

Ooh, look, Ben Gurion has a twin!

Isn't there some sort of klan meeting for you to go to instead of shiatting this place up?

Look up the definition of "Hypocrite", cman
