For all its troubles, the U.S. remains the only country that Europeans, Asians, Africans, Latin Americans and Australians want to move to in great numbers. As they all become Americans, the U.S. becomes just a little more like all of them, creating hybrid attitudes and styles that will shape the planet's future.

ZOMG THESE SOCIALIST IMMIGRANTS MUST BE STOPPED!!!

In Europe the best way for people to leave you alone is for you to not take a bath for a month and perfect your French accent. No one will even come close to you.

I love our melting pot of cultures. I know European countries are also letting people immigrate in and they are cooking up their own melting pots. But I prefer our culture of ALL THE CULTURES over their stereotypical cultures of laid back cheese and wine, or super-efficient brats, blondes, and beer.

I assume most the Americans who find American culture to be lacking are also basing that view on a stereotype. Now if you'll excuse me, my hoveround's seat has an appointment to be reupholstered with the stars and stripes and my second battery is finally charged for the 3 mile trip. Semper Fi.

We're not like liberals. We typically just disagree with people politically and don't launch in to sexism or racism at the drop a hat.

If you want to see sexism, be a woman that disagrees with a liberal.

If you want to see racism, be a minority that disagrees with a liberal.

If you want to see homophobia, be a homosexual that disagrees with a liberal.

wtf is "becoming more european" anyways? Are germans like the italians? are the italians like the british? has this author even been to europe for more than 3 day phototrip in front of the eifel tower? do these countries have common values and viewpoints on the metrics mentioned in the articles?

But lets just take this faulty assumption of uniformity at face value: i'll say no. even the americans on the blue coasts who admire what one could loosely call "european values" and support in theory things that middle class western europeans generally take for granted (universal health care, organized labor, good cities, public transportation, job security, dont mind taxes for programs which help the poor etc) most of the US only has a very superficial understanding of the things beyond their borders.

indeed, this article is a great example of that, lumping all europe into one big homogenous glob. (dont worry tho, they understand us just as poorly)

in short, this articles very premise is trying to make huge generalizations on a few statistics, and thus sucks and isnt worth the read.

I think they keep polling the same people over and over. I realize they take samples and attibute it to the whole but in 37 years on this planet I don't recall ever being asked to patricipate in a poll randomly. I mean random as in not counting leaving some kind of venue where everyone is offered or doing something like a product or services survey after spending some money. Everytime I see some kind of poll result that lumps up the entire country I see that B/W picture of a man holding up the newspaper declaring Dewy winning the presidency in my head.

There are certainly aspects of American 'culture' sneaking into our day to day life here in Ireland. When I was a kid, at Halloween, we used to say 'penny for the puca' and say a rhyme, now a lot of kids just say 'trick or treat', this is especially sad as it's a Celtic/Irish festival. Also, a lot of teenagers have started talking with that horrible Californian inflection? As for people saying 'movies' instead of 'films', don't get me started...

And last but not least, there are a lot more obese people.

It goes both ways. The younger generation in the US uses a lot of outdated British-English colloquialisms because of pop cultural cross pollination.

Dotn get me started about yanks who think theyre „german" or „irish" or „french" because their surname traces back to that culture generations ago and some stupid cultural stereotype applies.

"oh I have redhair and an o'(something) in my family tree, IM IRISH!"
"oh my last name is Jaeger and I have blonde hair, I'm GERMAN!"
"oh im hot blooded and lose my temper because im a sicilian!"

SO. STUPID.

I've lived 6 years or so of my life abroad mostly in Germany and Switzerland. And I gotta tell you NOTHING makes you more aware of how much you are a product of your own culture and will never be completely part of one youre not raised in like living in a foreign one. Ive become more in tune with my California-ness over the past several years than I ever did in California where I was surrounded by people who were just like me.

These freakin' pricks who have a bratwurst at a tourist trap in munich and learn to say "noch ein Bier bitte" and think they got in touch with their Opa's heritage, or like that guy I saw in Ireland... man these people are dumber than dumb. Its painful.

(goes the other way too of course... a german woman I recently was cornered by at a party told me in way too much detail about how she got lip from an African American woman on a bus and confided in me how she now totally understands the complexities of American race relations)

What's weird is that I was always ashamed to be a Southerner until I went out west. I couldn't believe people did not know where Tennessee was. (Is it next to Texas?) They thought I was from England because of my Southern accent. Wow!

Also, I learned to love the USA when I lived in Asia. I was surprised that I got homesick. I was married to a Korean so I had minimal contact with Americans. When I came back to the USA the first thing I noticed was how fat everyone was.

With the population density increasing and natural resources dwindling, it's inevitable.

US obesity would proabbyl be even more jarring coming from asia than it would be freom W. Europe. I personally think some western european countries are nearly as fat as the US is... lots of fat brits and germans now.

the thing i notice now when going back is how outdated and backwards the infrastructure seems, and how ugly most american cities are. Patchy potholed roads, powerlines everywhere...

youd think with storm after storm and power outages to millsion year after year the US could not buy a few bombers once and invest in burying the utility lines in the metropolitan areas above a certain population density.

but lets not forget, govt investing in its own country is "socialism" but investing in foreign country's infrastructure is "spreading democracy"

The only Australian I've ever known who wanted to move to the US was my Dad. After spending a couple of years living in DC and Georgia as a kid due his decision, I wonder what the fark he was thinking.

So does he for that matter. He returned to Australia after he retired, and now has a lower standard of living in retirement than his brother who never left their small rural hometown in Queensland.

I had a similar experience on a train to Berlin. A Canadian girl was going on and on, quite loudly about how "Canada was the best, America sucks" every other sentence out of her mouth was about Canada. You get obnoxious people from every country. It just tends to be easier to pick out the obnoxious ones who speak a language you know.

Also, if you are in Europe and someone tells you they are Canadian, and you suspect they are American, just ask them for the capital of Canada. 95% of Americans don't know it is Vancouver and will say something stupid like "Toronto"

2012-12-13 06:15:07 AM
There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all. The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

in short, blue coastal america is not that different from the center right of much of western europe. the red states are very far away from the rest of the west (and reality), and when they run the show, the differences betweeen the US and Yerp seem more pronounced than they otherwise do. Now since we have a center left kensian marxist communist fascist kenan president these differences are once again subordinate to a spirit of solidarity and cooperation instead of cowbay nationalistm mixed with blair's lapdog diplomacy of years past.

"Are Americans becoming more European?"

If you mean "European" in an eastern European communistic governmentally limited options on what you can own, eat, and think, kind of way, then yes I think we are clearly headed in that direction.

If you mean more socially progressive in a constructive central European way, then no.

If you are referring to western Europe at all, then it is clear that you don't even understand your own question because it is Western Europe which is becoming more like America, not the other way around.

Education in Holland keeps getting more expensive each year. Obesity is on the rise as more people swap their bikes for mopeds and cars. Holland now has food banks and soup kitchens, which was practically unheard of ten years ago. Rampant racism is becoming more mainstream, as the nuttier elements of the 'Freedom Party' are openly wishing for a return of a Dutch SS. Health insurance is dropping more and more options and drugs and are embracing the US model more each year. Unrest, anger, disappointment ad fear are driving more Dutch people towards the Freedom Party. I'm not going back to that, thanks very much.

Tat'dGreaser: This is not a good thing

I haven't noticed any difference in my neck of the woods. I don't think there's much to worry about.

Unless we just import the pub culture from Ireland. That I'd be ok with. The bars around here suck.

3rdtimearound: mbillips: Can we become more like Holland? No poverty, free education, hot blonde chicks on bicycles everywhere, still opportunity to get rich if that's your bag. I'm for that.

Do you get your dutch news from the Taily Mailengraaf or something?

i reject the argument that all is going to hell in a handbasket, anywhere in the western world.

hasty ambush: If by becoming more European you mean more sniveling, needy, less self sufficient, less self responsible, less self confident, more gender indeterminate, and more wiling to have less control over our lives in exchange for more "free stuff" from government then Yes.

Lol. You are practically a parody of yourself.

Gender indeterminate? I live in Ohio, and you would be hard pressed to tell the rural women from the men here. I swear to fark its like Tolkien dwarves up in this place. Universally apple shaped, if you are lucky the men grow a beard so you can at least tell who to call sir or ma'am sometimes. Seriously squidbillyesque.

Just to be on the safe side, I believe you should never try to claim that you're Canadian either.

I was wondering if anyone would catch that.

Ottawa.

ChubbyTiger: I've never really understood European stereotypes about Americans, their stereotypes about each other, or our stereotypes about them. By and large, everyone is pretty ok and I'll have a glass of the local libation with most any of them.

/or, I suppose our stereotypes about east vs west vs flyover vs south vs the pit know as Texas vs etc.

The hatred of the French is the most overblown European stereotype. No, they don't all chain smoke, forego leg-shaving, or smell bad. In fact, I recently had a one-nighter with a French tourist who had totally smooth armpits and legs, and smelt like strawberry cheesecake (yes, a TFer has actually touched a real, live girl). I also lived in Paris, albeit for 6 months. The worst cliche over there? AMERICANS.

blogs.telegraph.co.uk

Look, I dig my country. There are several major things I'd like to change (single-payer health care chief among them), but on the whole we're alright. Yet when it comes to bad stereotypes, man, we take the cake. For some reason we believe we're above the rest of the world, even as we lag farther behind in nearly everything but GDP and drone strikes. Well guess what, Americans...we aren't that farking special and we've only been around 200-ish years.

When I was a kid, at Halloween, we used to say 'penny for the puca' and say a rhyme, now a lot of kids just say 'trick or treat', this is especially sad as it's a Celtic/Irish festival.

The irish bring halloween to the us. we add our own spin to it, then ship it back to ireland.

Don't like it? Don't starve out half your population next time.

American Halloween is also influenced by Dia del Muerte.

It's a vicious cycle. A non-fat, educated, well-mannered American such as myself is terrified to visit Europe due to the irrational fear that I'll be ridiculed and mocked by the natives. Some Brittish slang is just bizarre to me. Not that I don't understand where the terms come from (usually), but in the actually choosing to use that word to describe that thing.

For example, torch. Why call a flashlight a torch? I get that the former serves the same function as the latter, but they're very different. Why not have a new word for a new thing?

I don't care what slang they use and I don't tell them that they're wrong for it. Different cultures do their own thing. Right on. But some of their slang is just odd to me. Aussie slang is even more head scratching.

/But what do you expect from a nation of drunkard convicts?

Hitler wasn't really socialist. For that matter, he wasn't fascist, in the economic sense of the term. The only thing that really mattered to Hitler was the unification and defense of the German People (in caps). Everything else was towards that goal, or in reaction to some unintentional outcome it lead to. Fascism was just the easiest means to achieve that.

Thank god for that Liberal Phenomenon, oopps sorry didn't mean to offend with the "G" word... Thank Obama for that Liberal Phenomenon. If we could all now just embrace more big government socialists from the past like Adolf Hitler then and only then will we all be happy.

Hint: hitler was farther right than even a pig ignorant farkwit like you. The name of the party had nothing to do with the political slant of the movement.

You know, much like when the GOP names their organizations dedicated to ensuring American serfdom "freedom", etc etc.

Yeah evil liberal MSNBC taught me conservatives are authoritarians.

Cause it's the liberals always trying to kill freedom. *snicker*

Oh wait, no,it's pretty much always conservatives. In fact, freedom killing authoritarians is basically a synonym for Republican.

Who are the new second class humans to the GOP this week. America told you it couldn't be black folks anymore. Then America told you it couldn't be gay folks anymore. Even the GOP is talking immigration reform, so it can't be Mexicans.

Please come ...

Do you seriously have a third grade education? Or as the rest of America calls it "homeschooled in a red state"?

The modern GOP has literally less than nothing to do with pretty much 90% of the shiat you just listed. Lincoln was a progressive, not a conservative. Can you grasp your admittedly small and primate-like mind around the idea that "republican" and "democrat" describe a different political reality in 2012 than they did in the 1850s?

Those racist democrats you talk about are the core of the current GOP, fyi.

And lastly, stopping the encroachment of fundamentalism in our government is a blow for freedom.

Which party wanted to put Sarah Palin one heart attack away from the nuclear button?

Which party said "you're either with us or you're against us" in the weeks after 9/11, started an illegal war that killed over 100,000 people, and then had the sheer gall to hypocritically biatch about extrajudicial killings when Osama bin Laden got what the entire world thinks he deserved?

Which party thinks that four people being killed in Benghazi under Obama's watch far outweighs the dozens of people who were killed by terrorist attacks on US embassies during Bush's watch? Not to mention the 3000 people who died on American soil on 9/11.

Which party destroyed America's global reputation by going on about "Freedom Fries" and other assorted bullshiat while it put "Mission Accomplished" banners on aircraft carriers after they'd attacked a country that never attacked the US?

Which party wants to teach creationism in schools?

First and foremost, Nixon AND Eisenhower would be drummed out of the modern GOP so fast that it would actually cause the rusty cogs you apparently use to think with spin once or twice. Nixon was almost evil enough, but he ruined it by actually becoming wiser as he aged.

Secondly, I said Lincoln was a progressive.

It seems like your Texas brain should have studied something other than the history of the Alamo.

Have you counted the number of Americans who move away?

Refugees go where they can.
Economic refugees go to the closest place where the jobs and money are.

The USA remains a primo destination as a result of both of these factors as well as good fundamentals as a destination. But because of 911 you diverted a heck of a lot of educated refugees, professors and students to other countries. And xenophobia could easily cut the stream of new Americans to a trickle, which would be a tragedy--more for you than for them, seeing as there are other options for those seeking the good life, employment, tolerance, freedom or wealth and (relatively) cheap real estate.

Once the recession is over (and once the GOP finishes killing itself with hatred and fear) prospects remain good. There's no reason to suppose that catching up to the US economically is going to be easy. Catching up in other terms, on the other hand, has gotten a lot easier. No longer do you have a lock on liberal democracy. Many former dumps are now doing as well or better than you politically and in other ways. You keep ignoring the fundamentals (like health and longevity, real liberal education and any other kind of real education) and you can slip slowly into mediocrity until you suffer the fate of the UK: having your fair share of the world's GDP, for instance. I believe it is about 6% if the UK is any model of a successful de-imperialization, and it is, except for the mess they left behind in Africa and elsewhere.

Europe consists of mostly smallish ethno-states. The US is a superstate, with states as large as countries in terms of GDP. And a mish-mash of ethnicities.

Europe is trying to evolve into a United States of Europe with the European Union. But... being ethno-states with storied histories and a history of war and competition with each other, as well as being distinct cultures and ethnicities... they may have put the cart before the horse.

It's popular to think of Europeans as homogeneous, and thus naturally should be one country, but they're really not.
