"Good morning. Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. We will be united in our common interest. Perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to existand should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on, we're going to survive.' Today we celebrate our independence day!"

Um, so in a nutshell TODAY WE ARE CANCELING THE APOCOLYPSE!

I'm not a big Kaiju fan. Even after CGI got to the point where "man in suit" was no longer needed, we got shiat like "Godzilla."

But this looks pretty farking awesome. And it has Jax Teller from "Sons of Anarchy" in it too. Knew I recognized the narrating voice.

Idris Elba should be in most movies and TV shows.

2012-12-12 09:30:05 PM
ok, so you have the technology and resources to make a big robot with rocket powered arms that punch monsters really hard because of the rockets powering them... but you can't just use that same rocket to make a missile that hits the monster really hard and then explodes? Seems unfeasible to me.

But I'll still go watch it. Should be fun.

Guillermo del Toro?

I'm in.

Seriously. He puts out a movie, I'm in. He's one of only a few directors that I will see anything by him. Every one of his movies, has been either an enormous amount of fun, or so bittersweet and moving, and often combinations of both, that I've put them on my MUST SEE list. That means, channel surfing, I will stop on his stuff, no matter what. I'm in. All in.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the most amazing movies that I have ever seen. I could gush for hours. I cried. And even Hellboy I love. But this looks like a movie trailer that would be laughed at if Michael Bay's name were on it.

Exactly. If anyone else were making this movie I would laugh my ass off and maybe catch it on DVD. But I trust del Toro a lot. He can take what looks like crap and make it magical. And if this is a royal stink bomb then I hope it at least earns him enough money to make his next movie amazing.

I don't know if I can get excited by the movie ...

Big bad alien things come to Earth, kill people, somebody makes an inspiring speech, humans build giant robots and beat up the aliens using Wii.

Sounds like a better FPS than a movie ...

2012-12-13 07:29:47 AM
Didn't really do anything for me, mostly because the aliens weren't particularly interesting and the CGI wasn't used to good effect.

Can't we just make a mechwarrior movie?

2012-12-13 07:31:56 AM
No way they use GLaDOS in this movie and NOT have it mean something. It's TOO distinctive a voice to have it just be "a voice"
It would be like having Darth Vader's voice, WITH the breathing, as another voice over. It's too iconic to be coincidence.
I say this movie is a precursor, and it's all part of the same universe? Maybe now we know what Cave Johnson was doing all this testing for? To fight monsters?

And they use the word "portal" and the human robot suits have the same blue and orange hues of the multiplyer bots. I'm sure I'm reading into this a lot, but there's no question it's GLaDOS. And I don't buy the "just a homage" thing. It's GLaDOS. Seems an odd thing to do with ZERO connection to the universe. And it seems weird Valve would allow it with ZERO connection (maybe Black Mesa makes the robots?)

AdolfOliverPanties: I'm not a big Kaiju fan. Even after CGI got to the point where "man in suit" was no longer needed, we got shiat like "Godzilla."

The 1998 Godzilla was actually a pretty damned good kaiju film. Certainly, it was better than all but the original 1954 Godzilla, and in some respects other than the effects, it was even superior to that one (for example, the science is a bit more believable).

It's not without fault, of course, but still a pretty decent film.

It's just marketing, same reason they re-use music soundtracks from past movies, instead of the actual soundtrack of the movie itself (which often isn't ready when the trailers are made and released). It means nothing in terms of potential. This isn't coming out for another 6 months, there's lots of work yet to be done on it.

am i the only person in this thread who doesn't know who idris elba is? i don't know what glados is either and now i feel weird cause you guys keep talking about it.

the trailer looks like a big stupid special effects movie like transformers or battleship or clash of the titans. sure, del toro is a good director, but nothing in this trailer makes me think the movie will be any good at all. that oblivion movie with tom cruise looks way more interesting than this does, based on the trailers.

Serious question, not being snarky: have you guys seen all of del Toro's movies? Do you think he has any bad ones? If you've even only seen both Hellboys and "Pan's Labyrinth", your confidence should be inspired. When it comes to material like this, he has a gift.

I remember seeing the first Hellboy trailer and thinking to myself how dumb and laughable it seemed. I skipped it in theaters and it was years on video before I finally got around to watching it, even though I knew it had gotten good reviews, just because it happened to be on TV. It wasn't long before I was smacking myself up the head for my snap judgement. When it comes to the fantastical, he knows what makes a great fantasy movie tick, mostly because he's a master of utilizing special effects in service of the plot and characters instead of the other way around. I'd bet money that there's no way this movie stinks.

It would have been easier to Google these names than to tell everyone you don't know what we're talking about.

But I agree, while the movie looks entertaining, it doesn't really seem like there's much to it besides robots fighting inter-dimensional alien monsters. Luckily I don't always need more than that.

GlaDOS is the primary antagonist of the "Portal" series of video games. Think of HAL from 2001, and add a smidgeon more insanity, and a great deal more snark.

"Good news. I figured out what to do with all the money I save recycling your one roomful of air. When you die, I'm going to laminate your skeleton and pose you in the lobby. That way future generations can learn from you how not to have your unfortunate bone structure."

Idris Elba was Heimdal in the Thor movie. And on The Wire, or so I hear.

Not all, but many. However, past performance isn't always reliable. I respect Jeunet more than any living director, but his entry in the Alien franchise was horrible. This movie might be very good. But that trailer didn't do it for me. Hopefully it is a case of the marketing department trying to "wow" an audience, and not a reflection of the thing itself.

This.

For me, Elba's and Del Toro's involvement means that I'll at least watch it on DVD, whereas I have completely ignored all of the Transformer movies which look so similar.

swahnhennessy: karmachameleon: Serious question, not being snarky: have you guys seen all of del Toro's movies?

Not all, but many. However, past performance isn't always reliable. I respect Jeunet more than any living director, but his entry in the Alien franchise was horrible. This movie might be very good. But that trailer didn't do it for me. Hopefully it is a case of the marketing department trying to "wow" an audience, and not a reflection of the thing itself.

True it's not always reliable, but I trust del Toro. We should all keep in mind that directors NEVER put together their own trailers. It always comes from marketing, and they can make movies look like pretty much anything they want to, no matter what the real movie is about.

buntz: And they use the word "portal" and the human robot suits have the same blue and orange hues of the multiplyer bots.

My thoughts almost exactly. The voice is identical, not simply reminiscent, and this is not a voice done without manipulation. Same nonchalance and same strangely rising tone (heck, the "3, 2, 1" countdown could've been taken right from Portal 2). And then looking towards the suits, a portal, etc., I have to think some connection, even simply strong references, has been made. Maybe Black Mesa or Aperture are involved in development of the robots or accidentally unleashing those monsters (guess which is involved with which) and there is no crossover or aligning further with the games but something.

2012-12-13 10:12:48 AM

buntz: No way they use GLaDOS in this movie and NOT have it mean something.

Cave Johnson here. Now, I've been hearing that there are rumors circulating among Aperture employees that we've discovered giant monsters from outer space. Let me be clear that those rumors are a bunch of bull.

Believe me, if there were giant space monsters out there we would have found them, and the boys down in Giant Space Monster Fighting Tech Development wouldn't be sitting on their asses all day playing cards. Do those layabouts think I'm made of money? Well they shouldn't because those transfusions didn't take.

Now there also have been rumors that the new Portal Device XK-6 we've been trying out have been turning test subjects into giant monsters. We'll be reverting back to the old reliable XK-5s until we get that worked out.

So get off your duffs and get to work, Giant Space Monster Fighting Tech Development. Science marches on.

It all potentially fits into the portal/half-life universe, too. If this movie takes place in between the events of Half-life 1 and 2, then this could be the beginning of the spread of the resonance cascade that allows for the Combine invasion. This might be valve testing the waters for a half-life movie.

Has anyone else told Del Toro to shut up and take their money? Because count me in. (And from this point on I don't want to see any more previews. I'm sold, I don't want to be spoiled.

Of course, the only gripe is that it's going to be post-production converted 3D, not filmed in 3D, so I will not be seeing it in 3D IMAX like I was originally planning. Unless I hear that it really, really looks better 3D.

Otherwise, I'll just go see it on the biggest 2D screen I can find, sit up close and let my inner 12 year-old have a hell of a good time.

I'm not saying it could necessarily be a tie-in, but things are close enough that they might have let del Toro play around with some of their assets, just to see how they would look on screen.

I simply cannot accept that. The trailer said they came from earth, and the humans surrendered within 24 hrs (according to newspapers in HL2) in the HL universe. HL would make a great show, not sure about a film.

I'm guessing LSD, lots of LSD.
For the TV show, I found the best thing to do as the show progresses is to just turn your brain off and enjoy the giant robots kicking ass to a great soundtrack.

If you want to really enjoy Eva, watch the movies that have been coming out recently. The first one basically recaps the first block of TV episodes, but after that they diverge quite wildly from the show.

Here's the Wiki on the series:Link

It's a complete retelling of the story from the beginning over the course of four movies, with significant changes after the first movie. I've only seen the first two and they were great. The third one is still in theaters in Japan and the reviews I've read say it gets into the expected "WTF did I just watch" plot. I'm still looking forward to it, though.

Going to have to try them. Do you know if the English voice overs are any good? FF7 AC was ruined by them and considering I might have to buy the first one to see it, I'd like insight if available.

Hope it still has conceptual goodness like a clone finding out they're a clone. Those episodes were kind of soul crushing.

I'm saying this as a fan of both del Toro's work and Kaiju/Super Sentai/Mechas...

THIS LOOKS LIKE TOOOOONS OF FUN!!!

I agree with others that said that in hands of other director *cough*michaelbay*cough* this could be an unwatchable mess that fails in even been a dumb action movie...

But I trust in del Toro's ability to create outstanding visuals and great deal of understanding of how to shoot an action scene.

Because war is unpredictable. The early angels were major victories that greatly inspired confidence. Then we had the one that was a computer virus, which was the turning point.

then came the possed eva and the horror of the Dummyplug autopilot. then came the ass kicking byt he next angel, and the series of disturbing revelations, mindrape, etc, that flowed afterwards. By the time Shinji was forced to kill the only one in a long time to show any real affection for him, and yeah, everyone was basically broken down to nothing. The End of evangelion movie made things that much worse by starting with a massacre and losing battle against other humans.

He doesn't get the chance, but he still goes nuts and threatens his father and Nerv HQ. The fight against that Eva, and the fight against the next angel are far more brutal affairs in the re-do.

Also, Mari's english voice is absolutely awesome, and her fights were fun as hell.

Shinji isn't really whiny to me, hes a 14 year old who honestly wants to be anywhere but in the cockpit of a 30 story weapon of mass destruction fighting a war he knows pretty much nothing about. It's like having a jr high student storm the beaches of Normandy without prior knowledge of the Nazi war machine.

Best part of the remakes is the stronger focus on Rei and Shinji in the films. Their relationship takes center stage, as far as character interactions goes.

Like I said, I really enjoy the series despite his biatching, and it's largely because at least they made it relatively understandable. But it would similarly be difficult to watch a show that had 5 minutes of crying babies every episode, no matter how realistic and central to the plot it is.

I remember one scene when he was fighting an angel, and literally all he had was thrust the knife forward to win. It wasn't even his first fight and he had people screaming at him to just stop crying and do it, but he just wouldn't farking do it. Certain episodes went beyond conceivable fear induced whining.

At least go watch the first one. It condenses the first seven or so episodes into one surprisingly awesome movie. And this is coming from someone who really didn't enjoy the original series, so no fanboy blinders. The second movie is a bit different but still pretty good, and features a surprisingly bad-ass Shinji.

If you watched the dubs originally like I did I recommend picking the US blu-ray releases as they look great and got almost all the original voice cast back, excepting Gendou iirc.

And I can't freaking wait to see this movie. The apparent blending of Eva, Macross, and Portal themes is making me giddy. Only thing that really worried me from the trailer was the pilot suits for some reason.

I say this movie is a precursor, and it's all part of the same universe? Maybe now we know what Cave Johnson was doing all this testing for? To fight monsters?

Chariots chariots.

You're the best. Around. Nothin's gonna ever keep you down.

This looks stupid. Battleship stupid.

I grew up on Inframan, Battle of the Planets, and the very beginning of Voltron, but this is just dumb. The story is straight out of Japanese giant monster films of the 60s/70s and adding Hollywood EXPLOSIONS isn't going to do anything different. I can't figure out why Guillermo del Toro is doing this WHEN HE SHOULD BE DOING MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS!

Here is my wild theory caused by sleep deprivation that I cooked up last night. The movie takes place in an alternate universe created by the Resonance Cascade. In this universe, instead of multiple small portals to the Xen and Combine universes, there is instead one large portal to the Kaiju universe. Copies of the GlaDOS AI were brought from Aperture Science and inserted into the jaegers. Originally, they were to be drones instead of human-driven, until it was discovered the AIs were too unstable and, well, homicidal. At that point, it was too late to replace the AIs, so they made it so that it needed two human minds in order to keep the AIs in check, which explains why there needs to be two pilots.

At some point in the film, the GlaDOS AI says something like "Target Acquired....and afterwards, there will be cake." This will be the "oh shiat" moment, as the jaeger begins attacking the humans instead of the monsters. The closing scene can be one of two things. The G-Man nonchalantly watching the spectacle, straightening his tie before walking off, or two background characters we've seen throughout the film joining forces, one, a geeky, goatee'd bespectacled guy wielding a crowbar, and a ponytailed girl of undeterminate race holding a portal gun, they nod at each other, the screen goes black and we get an endcredits song by Jonathan Coulton.

The weird-ass things I think up at 3 am...I swear.

No reason this couldn't take place after HL2ep2, whatever happened to the Borealis and all that opened a rift in the ocean floor and the Combine starts sending monsters through, Black Mesa and Apeture have to start building giant robots...

It probably doesn't tie into the Half Life universe at all, as cool as that would be, but I at least hope one of the monsters doesn't have eyes on his face and has them on his hands or wings or something...

Great series, but man, that kid was the most intolerable whiney biatch (I know that was kind of the point, but damn did it get grating).

For what its worth (nothing i guess), I didn't like the lack of buildup and total mental breakdown after his eva goes bezerk and crushes the other eva's pilot plug thing in the re-do

This. It's what made the characters in shiatty series like Gundam Wing look like psychopaths. No sane fourteen year old would relish killing.

For me it's all about what I watched originally. If I watch anything new today I'll watch it subbed because it's closer to the original intent voice-wise. Half the time they really screw up characterizations when they dub it. But it feels *wrong* to watch something I originally watched dubbed (most likely because it was on TV) because the characters look the same, but sound completely different. If I rewatch one of my favorite series, Crest of the Stars, I do it with the horrible dub because that's how I saw it on Tech TV originally.

/Wow it's such a bad dub

the opposite of charity is justice: I misread the headline and Summer Glau got added into the mix of giant robots and monsters.

And it was a thing of beauty.

She's cute, but I could never buy her being a super-ninja-killing-machine. Now if you want a giant chick fighting monsters, may I suggest Gina Carano? She's hot, she can kick ass, and she her acting is decent.

If the Pacific Rim movie turns out to be the lead in for HL3, I may as well just write all my future paychecks to Valve.

MisatoNERV: It's what made the characters in shiatty series like Gundam Wing look like psychopaths. No sane fourteen year old would relish killing.

Technically they were mentally unbalanced and the majority had tortured backgrounds. Souske from Full metal panic followed a similar path as a child solider, but it lent credence to his professional soldier image.
This sort tends to be pre-broken. Killing isn't as much of an issue to them as failure is.

"Normal" kids (like Leo from Zone of enders, Ayato from Rahxephon, Kira from Gundam seed, Renton from Eureka 7 (best of this lot, imo), and Akito from Nadesco) either start out thinking that robots are awesome or are reluctant.
They break down as the consequences of their actions hit home, but it doesn't take much to get them started.

Shinji snaps before anything traumatic had a chance to happen.
Going from a symbol of absolute temerity to battle crazed axe murderer in under thirty seconds ...could have used a bit more explanation.

I can't help but feel like you missed the point of that show. The characters WERE psychopaths, the whole show was about how horrific war is and how it mentally damages people. The pilots of that show were the ultimate representation of that, children raised in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' essentially.
