What he said, to a tee. I love Del Toro, and Stringer Bell can do no wrong, but that trailer didn't sell the movie very well.

Guillermo del Toro directing Idris Elba in punching giant monsters with a giant battlesuit. Just let that sink in for a moment.

Cyno01: aimtastic: Did I hear them refer to the giant robots as "eva?"

I like everything about this, but i read the synopsis and was like "WTF, is this actually a live action Evangelion movie or not?"

From TVTropes:
"Mori Mako is one to just about every female pilot of Neon Genesis Evangelion. She is introduced when suffering from injuries, like Rei, has to undergo Synchronization training with the hero like Asuka and her name may be a reference to Mari Makinami."

If anyone other than Guillermo del Toro was directing this, I'd pass and not think twice about it.

So much THIS. If I hadn't seen his name on it, I'd be cursing the son of a biatch who showed Michael Bay a copy of Godzilla × Mechagodzilla.

But del Toro is attached, and that's what gives it so much more promise. What in lesser hands would turn out to be stupid is likely to be a great work of art under his guidance.

yeah, not a good sign.

It's just marketing, same reason they re-use music soundtracks from past movies, instead of the actual soundtrack of the movie itself (which often isn't ready when the trailers are made and released). It means nothing in terms of potential. This isn't coming out for another 6 months, there's lots of work yet to be done on it.

am i the only person in this thread who doesn't know who idris elba is? i don't know what glados is either and now i feel weird cause you guys keep talking about it.

the trailer looks like a big stupid special effects movie like transformers or battleship or clash of the titans. sure, del toro is a good director, but nothing in this trailer makes me think the movie will be any good at all. that oblivion movie with tom cruise looks way more interesting than this does, based on the trailers.

Serious question, not being snarky: have you guys seen all of del Toro's movies? Do you think he has any bad ones? If you've even only seen both Hellboys and "Pan's Labyrinth", your confidence should be inspired. When it comes to material like this, he has a gift.

I remember seeing the first Hellboy trailer and thinking to myself how dumb and laughable it seemed. I skipped it in theaters and it was years on video before I finally got around to watching it, even though I knew it had gotten good reviews, just because it happened to be on TV. It wasn't long before I was smacking myself up the head for my snap judgement. When it comes to the fantastical, he knows what makes a great fantasy movie tick, mostly because he's a master of utilizing special effects in service of the plot and characters instead of the other way around. I'd bet money that there's no way this movie stinks.

It would have been easier to Google these names than to tell everyone you don't know what we're talking about.

But I agree, while the movie looks entertaining, it doesn't really seem like there's much to it besides robots fighting inter-dimensional alien monsters. Luckily I don't always need more than that.

enderthexenocide: i don't know what glados

GlaDOS is the primary antagonist of the "Portal" series of video games. Think of HAL from 2001, and add a smidgeon more insanity, and a great deal more snark.

"Good news. I figured out what to do with all the money I save recycling your one roomful of air. When you die, I'm going to laminate your skeleton and pose you in the lobby. That way future generations can learn from you how not to have your unfortunate bone structure."

Idris Elba was Heimdal in the Thor movie. And on The Wire, or so I hear.

Glados doesn't ring a bell with me, though. But I'm off work now, so I'll watch the trailer now.

When I saw deltoro's name I got excited, the trailer then proceeded to let me down. Droll is the best word I can think of to describe it. Straight down to the "ripped straight from independence day" speech over it.

Guillermo del Toro Has GlaDOS On Board for Sci-Fi Movie

Pretty much foreshadows the climax of the movie; A giant potato will kill the cloverfield robeasts.

The movie looks incredible though, like everything the giant robots in Transformers should have been.

No, no, no. The Marianas Trench will simply be flooded with a deadly neurotoxin.

That doesn't make any sense. Didn't James Cameron promise that the Marianas Trench is full of delicious cake?

Man, I was all excited, until I scrolled across and read the British "memo."

Not all, but many. However, past performance isn't always reliable. I respect Jeunet more than any living director, but his entry in the Alien franchise was horrible. This movie might be very good. But that trailer didn't do it for me. Hopefully it is a case of the marketing department trying to "wow" an audience, and not a reflection of the thing itself.

I like to think of Alien:Resurrection as a kind of proto-Firefly. Something with great potential but not yet fully formed, like many of the Ripley clone attempts in that film.

stratagos: crypticsatellite: I'm surprised they're using the voice of GLaDOS.

This movie is straddling the line between awesome and absurd. So far I'm still on the side of it being awesome, but a couple of corny scenes could ruin it.

It would be a waste if the computer didn't say snarky/evil things along the way.

/hoping when they say they borrowed glados, they meant the character as well as the voice.
/insane computer, mind farking, and ill conceived robotics are right up aperture science territory.

This.

For me, Elba's and Del Toro's involvement means that I'll at least watch it on DVD, whereas I have completely ignored all of the Transformer movies which look so similar.

True it's not always reliable, but I trust del Toro. We should all keep in mind that directors NEVER put together their own trailers. It always comes from marketing, and they can make movies look like pretty much anything they want to, no matter what the real movie is about.
