(Apple)   Summer 2013 just got insanely better. Guillermo Del Toro, giant robots, Kaiju on a grand scale and freaking Idris Elba. It's the trailer for "Pacific Rim"   (trailers.apple.com) divider line 205

Did I hear them refer to the giant robots as "eva?"

That reminds me, just got a copy of Robot Jox to watch later.

"Good morning. Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. We will be united in our common interest. Perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to existand should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on, we're going to survive.' Today we celebrate our independence day!"

Um, so in a nutshell TODAY WE ARE CANCELING THE APOCOLYPSE!

2012-12-12 08:23:59 PM
I'm not a big Kaiju fan. Even after CGI got to the point where "man in suit" was no longer needed, we got shiat like "Godzilla."

But this looks pretty farking awesome. And it has Jax Teller from "Sons of Anarchy" in it too. Knew I recognized the narrating voice.

Idris Elba should be in most movies and TV shows.

I'm surprised they're using the voice of GLaDOS.

Unless, there's an Aperture connection...

What's with the voice of GlaDoS?

Sounded more like Jäger, which is German for "hunter."

Jaegers from the synopsis.

Are you not happy about that?

2012-12-12 09:30:05 PM
ok, so you have the technology and resources to make a big robot with rocket powered arms that punch monsters really hard because of the rockets powering them... but you can't just use that same rocket to make a missile that hits the monster really hard and then explodes? Seems unfeasible to me.

But I'll still go watch it. Should be fun.

If Idris Elba and Del Toro weren't attached, everyone would be calling this Battleship 2. The trailer inspires no confidence.

Guillermo del Toro?

I'm in.

Seriously. He puts out a movie, I'm in. He's one of only a few directors that I will see anything by him. Every one of his movies, has been either an enormous amount of fun, or so bittersweet and moving, and often combinations of both, that I've put them on my MUST SEE list. That means, channel surfing, I will stop on his stuff, no matter what. I'm in. All in.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the most amazing movies that I have ever seen. I could gush for hours. I cried. And even Hellboy I love. But this looks like a movie trailer that would be laughed at if Michael Bay's name were on it.

This is actually the first I'm hearing of this film. i'm intrigued.

Ok, maybe I'm reading too much into the fact that they have the name Gottlieb, but it looks like the guy who played Owen in Torchwood is brothers with Charlie from Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

The theme song is pretty awesome.

JAGER!
You are a Meister of wicked lizards.
Pounding false "GOD"zillas like so many manilla Gorilla
prisoners dancing to "Thriller"
You are the Michael Jackson
to alien childs
running wilds
JAGER BOMB!

Pretty much foreshadows the climax of the movie; A giant potato will kill the cloverfield robeasts.

The movie looks incredible though, like everything the giant robots in Transformers should have been.

Exactly. If anyone else were making this movie I would laugh my ass off and maybe catch it on DVD. But I trust del Toro a lot. He can take what looks like crap and make it magical. And if this is a royal stink bomb then I hope it at least earns him enough money to make his next movie amazing.

/that, and it looks to be coming out right when I generally like to watch things getting blown up

Yeah, if this was another Michael Bay shiatfest, I wouldn't even think about renting it. Guillermo del Toro? SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

GLaDOS. In a Del Toro flick. About mechs fighting giant monsters.

...

I think I just she-jizzed in my pants twice.

Fluorescent Testicle: I am hereby dubbing this movie Portalgelion.

I don't know if I can get excited by the movie ...

Big bad alien things come to Earth, kill people, somebody makes an inspiring speech, humans build giant robots and beat up the aliens using Wii.

Sounds like a better FPS than a movie ...

2012-12-13 07:29:47 AM
Didn't really do anything for me, mostly because the aliens weren't particularly interesting and the CGI wasn't used to good effect.

Can't we just make a mechwarrior movie?

2012-12-13 07:31:56 AM
No way they use GLaDOS in this movie and NOT have it mean something. It's TOO distinctive a voice to have it just be "a voice"
It would be like having Darth Vader's voice, WITH the breathing, as another voice over. It's too iconic to be coincidence.
I say this movie is a precursor, and it's all part of the same universe? Maybe now we know what Cave Johnson was doing all this testing for? To fight monsters?

And they use the word "portal" and the human robot suits have the same blue and orange hues of the multiplyer bots. I'm sure I'm reading into this a lot, but there's no question it's GLaDOS. And I don't buy the "just a homage" thing. It's GLaDOS. Seems an odd thing to do with ZERO connection to the universe. And it seems weird Valve would allow it with ZERO connection (maybe Black Mesa makes the robots?)

2012-12-13 07:32:51 AM
FTA: To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers...

Hmm?

2012-12-13 07:35:17 AM

AdolfOliverPanties: I'm not a big Kaiju fan. Even after CGI got to the point where "man in suit" was no longer needed, we got shiat like "Godzilla."

The 1998 Godzilla was actually a pretty damned good kaiju film. Certainly, it was better than all but the original 1954 Godzilla, and in some respects other than the effects, it was even superior to that one (for example, the science is a bit more believable).

It's not without fault, of course, but still a pretty decent film.

DO NOT WANT Poster Girl: Sounds like a better FPS than a movie ...

Probably, but since I fangirl over GLaDOS harder than most teenage girls fangirl over Twilight, I really don't care. :P

I like everything about this, but i read the synopsis and was like "WTF, is this actually a live action Evangelion movie or not?"
