The James Bond Skyfall song was pretty good. But just give it to something from Les Miserables or something equally gay.

I liked the Skyfall song, too. History's working against that song, though, by virtue of the fact that:

1.) no James Bond song has ever won the Best Song Oscar

2.) the Academy generally enjoys musicals something fierce (not Rob Marshall's Nine, but still)

I am not a fan of gay sex, not even close. One time though, I was buttraped into ecstasy. I made sure to get seconds and laughed the entire time.

As a side note, nothing Randy Newman has ever done has impressed me, other than the music for The Natural.

Would Les Mis be eligible for original song?

Skyfall could win...but it won't.

She's got a great voice, and a good band, but If she wrote the lyrics, she needs to find a new writer and if she didn't, she needs to find a better writer.

That theme will not win.

Not a very high bar there. The last decent Bond song was probably "Goldeneye". Or maybe "A View to a Kill".

"Skyfall" is just a slower rehash of "Rolling in the Deep", another awful song, down to the backup singers.

Sir, I believe you are forgetting "The World Is Not Enough". Forgettable movie, but an excellent theme. It's got my 2 requirements: bombastic orchestral song and breathy female singer.

"Breath of Life" by Florence + The Machine (Snow White & the Huntsman) is an awesome song. Better than "Skyfall".

But we know the Les Mis song will win.

Well if any Bond song should have been nominated it should have been The World is Not Enough by Shirley Manson (Garbage). But Skyfall was cool, I like how they put the James Bond theme in the song (which they said almost got them disqualified).

If any had been by Randy Newman, it would have been chopped up and messed with to alter the real meaning of the song to strip it of his acerbic humor.

Would Les Mis be eligible for original song?

Many recent movie musicals have added new songs so there can be
a) something new for people who have seen the show on broadway
b) opportunity to be nominated and win a best song oscar.

Chicago had "I Move On," Nine had "Take It All," Dreamgirls had "Listen" "Love You I Do" "Patience," and The Phantom of the Opera had "Learn to be Lonely." None of those songs won.

Yeah, it still has to be an excellent song. Webber managed the trick, shockingly, for Evita with "You Must Love Me."

WRONG! 'You Know My Name' from Casino Royale was one of the best Bond songs.

Apparently, there is some question of whether SKYFALL is even eligible for nomination as an 'original
song' because the melody is largely that of John Barry's Monty Norman's James
Bond theme.

I didn't notice it, but I haven't listened closely to the song (as good as I think it is).

Just because it's the same singer does not mean it sounds the same. They sound nothing alike, do you only have one song from each band on you iPod because the other songs all sound the same? anyways who gives a shiat about the song, they nominate three terrible songs and then play a mash up

nice of them to include the artist names.

i was hoping to see something from the band Django Django off their album Django Django for the movie Django Unchained.

oh well. Django.

Mugato: Well if any Bond song should have been nominated it should have been The World is Not Enough by Shirley Manson (Garbage).

Absolutely.

THAT song had a lot of the usual James Bond-ian atmosphere to it.

That, and its worth doubles when you realize that the song is from the villain's point of view. It's a song that's *actually* relevant to what the movie's about.

I don't think there's ever been a drop in quality between Bond songs as there was between The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened there.

Mugato: But Skyfall was cool, I like how they put the James Bond theme in the song (which they said almost got them disqualified).

They got lucky. I was thinking that the Bond theme was going to render the song ineligible, but the Academy must have felt that it was only a fleeting motif and not a full-on transplant.

Thankfully, the Academy deemed it eligible for nomination. It totally deserves that.

As for telling you where the James Bond theme is in the Skyfall song, it's tough to describe, but it IS there. It's something of a musical progression.

I think it can be best heard at the end of the first chorus over the words "at Skyfall... at Skyfall" as it goes into the second verse.

It can be heard throughout the second verse, too, particularly underneath the lyrics "Skyfall is where we start."

It's kind of like that DO do DO do DO do DO do melody from the James Bond theme right before the theme kicks into the guitar going wild. I'm laughing as I describe this, because I really don't know how to describe it accurately (or well) enough.
