StrikitRich: Think I'd rather put the money toward a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Rye.

Funny, I spent the week before last hanging with Julian Van Winkle. You're SOL. We're all SOL. There is no more. All those old Pappys have been sold to private collectors, liquor stores, and restaurants. No one is getting a re up. The high ups in the company keep their private stash, but that's it. If you see it, buy it. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year comes out in '14, and the rest of the vintages will follow as time goes on, but that's the best we can do. I'd recommend Jefferson Reserve 18 Year in the meantime. Damned fine whiskey.

kim jong-un: ChewbaccaJones: St. Sixtus? I've had their other commercially-available ale with the monk on the label (for $11.99 a bottle).

It was the one James Lileks described as (paraphrasing)

"A beer apparently marketed to the celibate beer drinker...a unique, chewy beer that tasted like it was strained through roofing tar."

kinda curious what that tastes like...but for $84? No thanks.
Not unless that price included a steak and a type of beer that would actually go well with that steak.

It's not that expensive when you get down to it.

I'd invite some friends over, and hold another of my standard: "Hey, I just bought a crapload of weird beers, come and help me drink them" parties.

I miss holding them. Since I've moved to DC, I need help drinking my beer.

Move to New Hampshire. We'll help you drink it. We're really good at that up here.

jayhawk88: Because if there's one thing religious organizations are known for, it's turning down money. This stuff will be the official beer of the Super Bowl within 5 years.

I highly doubt it.

These monks have stuck to this tradition since the 1940's. The only reason they did this today is because they need a new roof for their Abbey.

I have about 40 westvleteren 12's sitting in my cellar, planning on busting them out on my wedding day or batchelor party. I brought them back from Belgium, the abbey has this little bar attached to it you can get the stuff any time but only in 6packs or by the glass. This stuff is truly a great beer, the monks make you promise not to resell it when you get it from them!

I got to the local mega-liquor store after work. I talked to a couple of the employees. Apparently the line formed this morning before 6 AM. There were 150 people waiting when the store opened. The store opens at 8 AM, they said they were sold out by 10 AM. Wow.

I wasn't expecting nirvana with this beer. Can't even say that I'm a huge trappist beer fan, as they're typically a bit too bitter for my taste. On the other hand, for as long as there have been beer rating web sites, this beer has been at the top. I'm really interested to see what it's all about.

CSB Time - I went to Belgium a few years back with a friend of mine ... we visited a cousin of one of his co-workers who would regularly go pick up Westvleteren direct from the abbey. He took us out there, we hung around while he picked up his two cases. Then we drove to the Chimay abbey and sat in their back and drank beer flights with cheese. Went back to the cousin's house, had a raclette dinner along with Westvleteren 12 and 8. It was quite an experience, and I must say this about the beer: while quite delicious, it was also strong as hell and had that strong alcohol aftertaste. In my opinion, not the best beer in the world. But what do I know? Needless to say, I got piss-ass drunk and puked up everything - beer, raclette, cheese - all over the guy's driveway.

Good times, good times.

unchellmatt: This stuff is heavenly. Not overly expensive either. They have it at Trader Joe's near me for $4 a bottle. Beer Advocate gave it rather high marks, too.

My local bar (stumbling distance) had both the Peepers and Stowaway on tap all summer long. I wasn't a huge fan of the Peepers, though. It was good, just not $7 per pint good.

I am so late for this thread. If you like that one, give "La Trappe" a try. Or, if you are around the area of Massachusetts, look for a beer called "Baby Tree" by Pretty Things. Both are Quads, though the LaTrappe is one of the authentic Trappist products.

Omahawg: dchurch0: I want this, but I live in Nebraska. Probably not gonna happen.

the hy-vee in countucky has a surprisingly good selection of belgian beer

I loved Hy-Vee when I lived in Omaha. My family actually lives in Counciltuckey, and I'd go visit quite often just to stop for the beer and some spring salad.

That said, I moved to Scottsbluff (the western end of Nebraska) about three years ago... so there's no Hy-Vee here, nor is there a decent selection of beer. I am about three hours from Denver, though, so I may run down this weekend to see if I can find some of this. Looks like there's a couple places in the Denver/Fort Collins area that are supposed to have it.

I came here to recommend this as a viable alternative to Westvleteren XII. Not a trappist, but an equally good beer.

The "bricks" where sold at the Colruyt supermarket chain in Belgium as a one-time event too. Both the announcement and the resulting rush when it hit the shelves made the national news.

One word of additional trappist advice: Orval.

Incidentally, the LCBO release has been a bit of a clusterfark, with different stores putting out their stock on different days, conflicting information about when it's going to be available where, no transparency about how many bricks each store has, phones at the stores ringing off the hook, and people showing up before dawn to wait only to find out their outlet hasn't gotten it in yet. I called the closest store to me yesterday night and was told they didn't have it yet only to find out today that they actually did and sold it this morning. I'm just lucky that the rude as hell employee I talked to last night at Bayview Village actually gave me correct information in spite of her surliness. But there are some stores that haven't sold it yet, so Ontario farkers willing to phone around, deal with employees who by now never want to hear the word "beer" again, and line up in the cold and dark outside stores which may or may not have stock may still be able to get some over the next few days.
