Decent beer. Not worth the hype. Definitely not worth the money, except as trade bait.

"I think it will be the last [time]," Westvleteren Brewery spokesman Mark Bode told NPR. "They say, 'We are monks, we don't want to be too commercial. We needed some money to help us buy the new abbey and that's it,' Back to normal again."

Because if there's one thing religious organizations are known for, it's turning down money. This stuff will be the official beer of the Super Bowl within 5 years.

I've had it. It is dark beer that tastes woody and yeasty. I did not like it at all.

Ha... A beer that someone else has heard of? You suck.

I get my beer from a store two towns over. It's so elusive, I have to say a magic word to get it. I would post a picture of it, but it will cause you to try to drink your monitor and I don't want to be responsible for you electrocuing yourself.

A beer that someone else has heard of... >

Our beer store sold out of that at 8AM this morning. Couldn't have submitted it last night?

I've never had a Saint Arnold beer I've enjoyed. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's a mental thing.

Anyway, Shiner Cheer is tasty. It's not the best beer in the world, but I like it.

I like Dark Lord but Dark Lord isn't good enough to shine Westy 12's shoes.

Bought my brick this morning. Have 11 bottles of DL in the cellar.

I just snagged a case of this stuff myself.

3x these after eating a salad at the Dogfish Head Ale House and I became "that guy" at the bar for the first time in my life. Had to take a cab home, missus refused to talk to me/drive me home.  CSB and a cautionary tale to boot.

a Toronto LCBO got 105 cases (1,400 for all of Ontario) and sold them all within 4 minutes.

This beer takes MONTHS to get and usually requires a trip to Europe.

They're tearing down the abbey and rebuilding a new one. Selling the beer overseas is helping to raise funds.

I suggest that we make a drinking game out of that beer advertisement using the abundance of weasel words in it.

Hey beer snobs. Good APAs and ambers? Hit me!

2012-12-12 04:30:22 PM
There are a number of you who claim to have drank this beer. However when they did the story on NPR this morning there were a number of beer experts who have been waiting for years to get a reservation to even taste it. The claim is they only make 380 barrels of beer per year. Are you sure you didn't buy some other "Trappist" beer? Trappist is a term for all the various monk breweries not this specific one. I'm not saying it didn't happen, I'm just suggesting that 380 barrels per year is a very small number and the odds of more than one of the people who've drank it being on Fark are well...hmmm.
