Actually, slavery has been illegal there since 2007. It's just not enforced because it's "the natural order of things".

Sounds like a fantastic vacation spot.

2012-12-12 12:18:56 PM
So they're following Leviticus then. Shouldn't be a problem, right?

2012-12-12 12:19:18 PM
Now if we can only get the UN to run the internet.

/and people still think the UN is a good thing.

2012-12-12 12:19:23 PM
Completely done in two

2012-12-12 12:22:02 PM
Who best to fight for human rights but someone most knowledgable in how to abuse them?

2012-12-12 12:22:43 PM
And you know, its crap like this that lends credibility to the mouthbreathing right wingers.

2012-12-12 12:25:07 PM
Don't forget force feeding young girls to make them fat. But hey, it's cultural, right?

2012-12-12 12:27:39 PM
Who are we to judge them by saying that their forms of slavery are inferior to ours?

2012-12-12 12:28:47 PM
They just legalized Mauritania in Colorado and Washington state ! woohoooo !

2012-12-12 12:29:41 PM
They don't even have ambulances there.

Wow, they'd probably ban Peopleofwalmart.com as a porn site.

2012-12-12 12:32:04 PM
And that's what makes them the perfect choice to lead the UNHuman Rights Council.

I certainly hope there aren't many Mauritanian immigrants to the US. They'll go mad from desire.

2012-12-12 12:38:24 PM
An entire country of feeders and chubby-chasers. Hmmm. I'm okay with that?

2012-12-12 12:39:55 PM
hmmm Mauritanian men love fat chicks... there's way too many fatties here in the US.... I think I see a money making opportunity here.

www.fatdesertbrides.com who wants in?

Oh it is enforced. Owning slaves can get you four months in prison and a $677 fine if you're the one unlucky bastard in the country who was charged and convicted since the law went into effect.

Gotta love those French-African colonies, they've become such progressive members of the world community since gaining independence from colonial rule.

But,.. but.... JEEEEEEWS!

Sounds like someone has been reading too much Gor.

A state of inclusion is a nice thing to have, but I'm forced to wonder if perhaps some minimal form of procedure to keep foxes out of the pool of potential henhouse guards is a Good Idea.

Someone should torpedo this nomination.

2012-12-12 12:46:44 PM
Considering what makes up this wonderful organization, those features make them middle of the road and moderate.

Who cares, the UN is a joke.

2012-12-12 12:48:16 PM
It gets better. One of the other VPs is from the Maldives, where non-Muslims cannot be citizens and open practice of any non-Islam religion is a criminal act.

You totally rock, UN.

They like fat chicks, huh? Have we considered importing these guys to the States as a source of cheap labor?

2012-12-12 12:51:08 PM
See, this kind of outrage is what you get when you try to apply our standards to nations and cultures who have no faith in the essential decency of the white man's culture.

BoxOfBees: Who are we to judge them by saying that their forms of slavery are inferior to ours?

B-b-b--but slavery is only bad when whites enslave blacks.

2012-12-12 12:56:44 PM
But all cultures are equal.

/I blame Bush

De facto legal slavery? Theocratic rule? Sounds like Republican paradise!

What about the Jews? That they ran the slave trade in Mauritania?

Except they worship a pagan moon god instead of the Holy Trinity of Ronald Reagan, Ayn Rand and Mammon.

Ridiculous. Jesus said it was IMPOSSIBLE to serve both Rand and Mammon.

I thought the Mauritania was sunk in 1915 by the Germans.

2012-12-12 01:21:25 PM
Well, at least Mauritania is legal in my state now. END THIS WAR!

According to Wikipedia, female genital mutilation is still a problem there.

Do Arabs know how to party, or what?!?

I don't know about that, but they seem to have bigger political problems at this point. In any case, Global Warming will soon finish them off once and for all.

Neo-colonial, you mean. Its not like the French set them up for anything but failure once they got their independence a mere 50-ish years ago.

In the long term we're all dead, all the more reason to not waste the life we have for the sake of religion.

At what point of wealth inequality does employement basically equal slavery?

After watching this I actually found a bit of respect for Haiti and its history. Toussaint Louverture was a badass, its too bad he wasnt in the southern USA instead of Haiti or our history would have been far more awesome.

I have zero problem with this.

Two reasons:
1. 1st world countries with highly rated pro-human rights conditions and legislation (typically european) don't care about human rights movements in 3rd world countries. There's likely to be more motivation to enact pro-human rights UN policy by someone currently experiencing human rights turmoil.

2. There's 4 VPs with a wide range of human rights backgrounds and policies. When determining policy and the best way to implement pro-human-rights change, it helps to have someone who actually knows what's going on in the country, and how to most effectively effectuate the change.

The Haiti portion of Michener's Carribbean is awesome for just this reason. Badass indeed.

You clearly do not understand cultural relativism. It's not a reason to accept everything because others believe their way of thinking and doing is correct, it's a method for investigating beliefs and practices in the context in which they exist. Once you understand beliefs and practices in their specific contexts, then you can start to judge them according to their own logics and according to the standards of others. Accepting cultural practices and ideas on the grounds that they're "cultural" is just as ridiculous as rejecting the unfamiliar and assuming that your own way is objective or natural.

One can both completely understand cultural relativism AND agree with everything else you said and still believe that intentional infliction of pain and ill health for cosmetic and subjugatory purposes is immoral, wrongheaded and even evil.
