I guess we just have to do this every year now. Thanks for this unique story that is in no way duplicated by dozens of other "indie" outlets, AV Club.

Sadly, I can remember watching this when it originally aired and thinking it was pretty good. Of course, I was only seven so that may have had something to do with me liking it.

i was 9 when this aired. i was in full-on star wars mania mode. my younger brother and i couldn't wait for it to be shown. finally, when it was, our collective reaction was much like ralphie parker's when he finds out his little orphan annie decoder ring was just a marketing gimmick. we were devastated. even at 8 and 9, we knew it was an unmitigated piece of shiat.

the boba fett cartoon was cool, though...

Well, if you enjoy seeing your favorites from the movies , high on any number of substances, which given the content, I see why they were high. Pretty cringe-worthy, with a few laughs. Don't get the hate, it's pretty meh for the 70's.

i'll be honest. even with the rifftrax it is hard to watch (and let's be honest - it isn't like the rifftrax are all THAT funny anyway. They are just WAYYY too tame). there are moments of hilarity but then there are like 10-15 minutes of eye gouging horror.

Agreed.

Episode I was the weakest of the series, but not anywhere near as bad as some people make it out to be.

The Holiday Special? OMG. That was awful.

A thin excuse for a Star Wars-themed variety show with a little recycled footage from the first movie, lengthy segments of a Wookiee family together in a living room talking (without subtitles).

Star Wars ANYTHING starring Bea Arthur and Art Carney should be a warning.

The fact they salvaged it (at least partially) into canon/continuity by using Chewbaccas family in later novels (including Lumpy becoming pretty much the only wookiee Jedi) and by occasionally making mention of Life Day as a holiday was amazing, since Lucas said he would have loved to hunted down every copy in existence and smashed it. Well, that and the fact it was the first appearance of Boba Fett (albeit in a cartoon).

I did sit through it once for the Nerd Cred.

I had a friend in college who had a bootleg VHS of it. He said he watched it ONCE, ever, and that was only because he was a die-hard Star Wars fanatic.

I figured he was exaggerating. Circa Christmas of 2000 we got together at his apartment to watch it.

Yeah, not doing that again, ever.

I was young and foolish. About the same age as when I ate a habanero pepper whole for "high spice tolerance" cred, and I won't do that again either.

It should stand as a testament to the popularity and quality of Star Wars that this show did not sink Star Wars as a franchise.

2012-12-12 10:58:56 AM
I did a Star Wars marathon once and watched Eps 4, 5, and 6 as well as the Holiday Special in chronological order. I can now safely say, without a doubt, that the Holiday Special is the literally worst thing I have ever watched in my entire life, and I can never get that 1.5 hours back. Sad.

As bad as Episode I was, The Phantom Edit showed that there was at least a decent movie contained within what was released. I don't think there's any way the Holiday Special could be similarly salvaged. Although I'd love to see someone try.

2012-12-12 11:06:00 AM
No. Episode I is better than the Holiday Special. Episode I had Darth Maul and "Duel of the Fates", which is still an awesome action piece in Star Wars canon.

Rocky Horrow is in the So Bad it's good zone?

2012-12-12 11:11:35 AM
I actually remember seeing this when it aired (I was three), but it never aired again and the memory got so distant I thought I dreamed it. I only recalled a few bits, one where the wookies are walking toward a tree in ceremonial garb and one where Han gets into a brief struggle with a stormtrooper. Years go by and I asked many friends if they knew about a Star Wars episode that only played on television and they all gave me puzzled looks, which reinforced my idea that I dreamed up the whole thing. Then the internet came, and I finally got to a chance to watch what was largely erased from my brain. I was thrilled to see what I had been missing all those years, like I had just found a treasure that has been buried for over a millenia. And then I clicked the play button....

I've only seen the Phantom Menace once, but I'll watch it a hundred more times before I ever lay eyes on the Holiday Special again.

Before the internet, I had started to think that the Star Wars Holiday Special didn't really exist, and that I had imagined the whole thing as a child (I think nobody mentioned it out of embarrassment), so it was kind of nice to find out that I wasn't crazy.

This ... is actually a pretty good prediction. This ... is actually a pretty good prediction. I'd never really thought about it, but with Lucas out of the way, the odds of getting things that SW fans have always wanted (and Lucas never wanted) -- a good DVD transfer of the non-SE original films, a release of the Holiday Special, etc. -- is higher than it's ever been.

I'm not sure on some of the details of the Disney deal. Does Disney now own the distribution rights for the existing movies and the Holiday Special? Or are the movies still the property of Fox, and the TV properties (Holiday Special, Ewok movies, Droids, etc), still owned by their respective networks? I thought Disney only owns the rights to the Star Wars IP, not the existing media.

Also, Episode I was disappointing, but Episode II was 10 minutes of good action, followed by me sleeping, followed by waking up to see a whole bunch of Jedis fighting before the credits rolled.

the Ewok things are bad, but they aren't torture to get thru. Hell, kids might even watch them. I just never really "got" the SW holiday special. Who thought that it was even remotely airable? Wht kid wanted to watch Bea Arthur warble thru a terrible song in a cantina? What kid cared if Art Carney sold crap in a galactic Dollar General? My understanding of the deal is that Disney owns everything LucasFilm owns.

The only thing that LucasFilm does NOT own is the distribution rights to Episode IV, that's FOX.

Since LucasFilm was built on the steal of a deal that GL made with FOX back in '77. In exchange for waiving any pay or compensation for making Star Wars, he got complete spin-off, merchandising, and sequel rights in perpetuity. FOX would have the complete rights to distribute the actual "Star Wars" film itself.

Every time A New Hope is re-released, it's by FOX and LucasFilm jointly, because LFL can't release it on its own. Everything else is pure Lucas.

At the time, FOX thought it was an incredible deal, because they were getting the movie made without having to pay the director. They figured he might sell a few T-shirts or something, but movie merchandising and spinoff/sequel rights were just plain not highly regarded in the mid 70's.

That deal is probably the one that made studios sit up and take notice of sequel and merchandise rights. Heck, nowadays merchandising is probably worth more than the regular box office take if there's a sufficient tie in with kids' toys (exhibit A: Cars).

Okay, that makes sense.

Has there been any update on Lucas' plan for a new live-action television series since the Disney deal. Judging by Disney's enthusiasm over a movie or two every year, I would think they would fast-track any television idea and put it on ABC.

Dude, it's been what, a month or so? It takes longer than that to get something moving. Even if there's word of something in the works, it takes time to get actual motion.

I'm not expecting an air-date for the premiere, or anything like that. I just figured with how vocal their plans have been for moving forward with the film series, they may have mentioned the television series since Lucas has been bringing it up periodically for the past couple of years.

actually if you cut out the musical numbers and edit it down to JUST the main "plot" and the cartoon, it wouldn't be all that unwatchable. Still bad but at least not an embarrassment. You could cut it down to about 30 minutes and you would have something that could be shown.

This was the year Superman came out. So I had moved on from SW until Empire came out....but even I avoided this nonsense. It was like one long commercial.

Lucas wasnt alone in his soul-selling cash grab- The next year Disney tried to capitalize on the Sci-fi rush with their first PG movie-"The Black Hole". It was one of the last appearances of a coked-out-of-mind Anthony Perkins, Ernest Borgnine, a young Robert Forster and Maximillion Schell of all people as the villain (Roddy McDowell and Slim Pickens were the robot voices). I remember being horrified at how Perkins gets killed (In a farking DISNEY FILM).

Now Disney's check is for 4 bill. Full circle in a way.
