I guess we just have to do this every year now. Thanks for this unique story that is in no way duplicated by dozens of other "indie" outlets, AV Club.

Ok, I get the hate for Episode 1, hell I share it. But it is no where never as bad as the Holiday Special!

Sadly, I can remember watching this when it originally aired and thinking it was pretty good. Of course, I was only seven so that may have had something to do with me liking it.

You were seven and it was Star Wars, forgive yourself already....

i was 9 when this aired. i was in full-on star wars mania mode. my younger brother and i couldn't wait for it to be shown. finally, when it was, our collective reaction was much like ralphie parker's when he finds out his little orphan annie decoder ring was just a marketing gimmick. we were devastated. even at 8 and 9, we knew it was an unmitigated piece of shiat.

the boba fett cartoon was cool, though...

Im in the same boat. I remember years ago a guy I worked with got a real bad copy of it and we watched it and at the end had this WTF look on our faces. Childhood really does blind taste.

The Holiday Special was something that we could all forget about that wasn't really "cannon." Episode I was "real." It was an episode of Star Wars, and we have to live with it forever. Advantage = holiday special.

Well, if you enjoy seeing your favorites from the movies , high on any number of substances, which given the content, I see why they were high. Pretty cringe-worthy, with a few laughs. Don't get the hate, it's pretty meh for the 70's.

Yeah. To a seven year old still high from Star Wars, it was awesome. As was Mark Hamill's appearance on the Muppet Show.

i'll be honest. even with the rifftrax it is hard to watch (and let's be honest - it isn't like the rifftrax are all THAT funny anyway. They are just WAYYY too tame). there are moments of hilarity but then there are like 10-15 minutes of eye gouging horror.

It is truly, truly terrible.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Ok, I get the hate for Episode 1, hell I share it. But it is no where never as bad as the Holiday Special!

Agreed.

Episode I was the weakest of the series, but not anywhere near as bad as some people make it out to be.

The Holiday Special? OMG. That was awful.

A thin excuse for a Star Wars-themed variety show with a little recycled footage from the first movie, lengthy segments of a Wookiee family together in a living room talking (without subtitles).

Star Wars ANYTHING starring Bea Arthur and Art Carney should be a warning.

The fact they salvaged it (at least partially) into canon/continuity by using Chewbaccas family in later novels (including Lumpy becoming pretty much the only wookiee Jedi) and by occasionally making mention of Life Day as a holiday was amazing, since Lucas said he would have loved to hunted down every copy in existence and smashed it. Well, that and the fact it was the first appearance of Boba Fett (albeit in a cartoon).

I did sit through it once for the Nerd Cred.

I had a friend in college who had a bootleg VHS of it. He said he watched it ONCE, ever, and that was only because he was a die-hard Star Wars fanatic.

I figured he was exaggerating. Circa Christmas of 2000 we got together at his apartment to watch it.

Yeah, not doing that again, ever.

I was young and foolish. About the same age as when I ate a habanero pepper whole for "high spice tolerance" cred, and I won't do that again either.

It should stand as a testament to the popularity and quality of Star Wars that this show did not sink Star Wars as a franchise.

2012-12-12 10:58:56 AM
I did a Star Wars marathon once and watched Eps 4, 5, and 6 as well as the Holiday Special in chronological order. I can now safely say, without a doubt, that the Holiday Special is the literally worst thing I have ever watched in my entire life, and I can never get that 1.5 hours back. Sad.

But enough about The Phantom Menace. . .

And yet, it was highly anticipated. Back in the days before home video, the internet, misc. Back when you had to hope for a revival at the theater. And we knew we had to wait for a year and a half for the next installment (which was more bad-ass than we could have imagined). So remember that before you slag on it.

but, yeah, it sucks balls

I caught a part of the original showing on a television, what was not hooked to cable. Sometimes you got a good signal, sometimes you didn't... Sounds like I saw all I needed to in 5 minutes... :)

Lumpy didn't become a Jedi. That was Lumpy's cousin, Lowbacca.

We used to keep this on in the background at the Christmas parties. Had an old VHS tape of it that someone in New York had recorded off the television. The commercials were far and away the best part.

As bad as Episode I was, The Phantom Edit showed that there was at least a decent movie contained within what was released. I don't think there's any way the Holiday Special could be similarly salvaged. Although I'd love to see someone try.

2012-12-12 11:06:00 AM
No. Episode I is better than the Holiday Special. Episode I had Darth Maul and "Duel of the Fates", which is still an awesome action piece in Star Wars canon.

Rocky Horrow is in the So Bad it's good zone?

2012-12-12 11:11:35 AM
I actually remember seeing this when it aired (I was three), but it never aired again and the memory got so distant I thought I dreamed it. I only recalled a few bits, one where the wookies are walking toward a tree in ceremonial garb and one where Han gets into a brief struggle with a stormtrooper. Years go by and I asked many friends if they knew about a Star Wars episode that only played on television and they all gave me puzzled looks, which reinforced my idea that I dreamed up the whole thing. Then the internet came, and I finally got to a chance to watch what was largely erased from my brain. I was thrilled to see what I had been missing all those years, like I had just found a treasure that has been buried for over a millenia. And then I clicked the play button....

I've only seen the Phantom Menace once, but I'll watch it a hundred more times before I ever lay eyes on the Holiday Special again.
