Hmmm, I wonder why that is:

The Charleston area alone, which includes a large Air Force base and a Navy facility, holds more than 66,000 defense jobs and nearly half of the state's military economic activity, according to a report released last month by the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

I can't wait to find out who our next enemy is going to be. It's been brown people since the fall of the Soviet Union, and I am kind of sick of that. Let's go for something different this time, like maybe Aborigines?

We tried that, but we owe them too much money and they make too much of our crap.

Russia is the only logical choice. We could lump them in with Iran and North Korea as the new "Axis of Evil".

We've actually haven't stopped accusing Russia of being evil since 1921. Iraq, Iran, North Korea and Syria all are or were versions of Russian client states. When it comes down to it, we're accusing them of using Russian bought weapons against the world.

Part of the reason that we spend so much on defense is that half of it's function is to serve as the
redneck welfare program.

I always love how the people who fight to siphon money away from actually national defense into their own pockets like to pretend that they are patriots.

And this is why the Fiscal Cliff won't happen. Not because of the 2%, or the GOP worrying about getting blamed for the 98% tax hikes, or anything else.

The cliff won't happen because of the deep cuts into the Defense Budget that are set to go in effect on Jan 1, 2013. The men who run those companies simply will not let it happen.

Watch and see.

"I want the Iranian nuclear threat to be resolved before [agreeing to] a hundred, a hundred fifty billion dollars beyond the $489 [billion]" in defense cuts already enacted in 2011, Graham said.

Ummm....ignoring that (as has been pointed out in the thread already), there is ALWAYS a threat from SOMEONE...

What Iranian nuclear threat? Or is he saying we can't have cuts to defense spending until we not only have no threats to the US (already ridiculous), but also to Israel?

Of course... Everyone knows that the poor and middle classes should shoulder the burden of economic recovery in the form of "austerity". Look how well it's worked for England.

Defense spending is patriotic and good for the country while programs that help the poor, elderly and disabled are the worst kind of socialism.

So let's keep making those tanks the Army doesn't need and will just sit in a parking lot somewhere and make sure that lazy poors have some skin in the game.

If grandma is freezing because her heating assistance got cut, she should just go out and buy some sweaters from Walmart.

The best part about the fiscal cliff and the debt ceiling debate is that if the republicans do refuse to pay the bills the executive has the authority to prioritize spending. The first thing I would do is shut down every military base in a red state. That would clear up the problem REAL quick.

I have been waiting for somebody "serious" to suggest this. The thing is I think most of the neocons realize that our war machine can't be built without Chinese parts, and they can't run their economy without the US as a market. In other words any real conflict amounts to MAD. Still it will be quite amusing when they recruit a new jingo member that gets up on Fox to proclaim how we should force our will on China before it is "too late."

China 'is' the closest thing we have to a legitimate threat when it comes to conventional forces. The problem they have lies in the fact that they do indeed have a massive army. They just lack any real means to move that army overseas. Their navy is next to nothing and laughable when compared to the U.S. Navy.

What this means is that the Chinese are a plausible threat, but only to their land-bound neighbors and Taiwan. Especially Russia. Man, I seriously would hate to be Russian if the Chinese ever decide that they 'need' those resources in Siberia.

It wouldn't work very well. The US invaded Grenada without telling the UK, even if it is in the British Commonwealth for instance, Caused a little tissy and then was promptly forgotten,

The last time there was a major issue is when the US suggested the UK break up the Falklands, give a third to Argentina, a third as a buffer zone to the US so they can keep an eye on all the oil there and make sure it used properly and then keep a third themselves and were promptly told to EABD. Other then that though and the occasional political problem such as Mitt Romney insulting the whole country, not a lot happens.

"I want the Iranian nuclear threat to be resolved before [agreeing to] a hundred, a hundred fifty billion dollars beyond the $489 [billion]" in defense cuts already enacted in 2011, Graham said. (He apparently misspoke; the figure is $487 billion.)

Congress already shaved $487 billion from projected 10-year defense spending under the 2011 Budget Control Act

Weren't those just reductions in future spending increases? I thought it was a liberal trick to call such things "cuts"?

"Graham warned that Iran could do "damage" to the U.S. if armed conflict arose - and that he thinks Israel lacks the capability to end Iran's nuclear program on its own."

How is that The United States' problem?
