I love Paul McCartney and The Beatles, but lets not get crazy here. JPJ was a much better bass player and was awesome in TCV.

Different types of bass players in nearly different eras. McCartney publicized the idea that the bass would carry a melody (I didn't say invented...). That is part of Penny Lane's brilliance. And yet he knew when to back it off into the woodwork to support percussion.

I'd consider them equals at least....

Ahhhh no. No no no no no no.

Ha ha ha. No.

I'm not saying McCartney is a shiat bass player, because he's not, but I'd put JPJ and Entwhistle over him. Also, Jack Bruce.

I'd put McCartney right up there. Ahead of Entwistle, actually. Love The Ox, but his is probably the easiest "legend" style I ever mastered. McCartney is more melodic and will do different things. Entwistle, especially live, relied on a handful of signature riffs and fills. Pretty predictable.

browntimmy: I have nothing against either band, but McCartney is past the age where he should be performing rock songs. And I don't mean old people should never play rock, even a few years ago he could probably pull it off, but the last time I saw him he sounded very grandpa-y.

ORLY?

67 years old...disagrees with your assessment.

This. He and Grohl are close actually. Grohl is rumored to be on Paul's new ablum after Paul mentioned to him that he would have played bass in Crooked Vultures had Grohl asked. Being a big fan, Dave was kicking himself.

That being said, I would still take that band with Paul in it.

Would prefer Paul playing with Pearl Jam, Vedder/McCartney duo would make my ears die from joy

Yes, only the most snobby elitist of hipster can dislike the sonic gold that is post-Beatles McCartney: Jet, Band on the Run, Live and Let Die, No More Lonely Nights, My Brave Face, Freedom... You know, those anthems that defined a generation. Is there anything else I'm forgetting? Oh, right...

If hating post-Beatles McCartney is hipster, I'll take my PBR and ironic T-shirt now, please.

Who is that?

Nobody knows his name. Rumour is he doesn't have one. But he stands in judgement of your post facto discover of modern societal ennui in regards to the fusion of past and...further past acts to be detrimental to the development of new acts...none of which you've ever heard of.

Man, he's fallen, now playing with a garage band from Seattle. Well, I guess it beats raising cattle.
