That might be interesting.
Then again, I thought Lou Reed fronting Metallica might be interesting.

The Beatles and the Pixies were Cobain's favorite bands.

Both DG and PM are incredibly talented musicians and songwriting machines, but Nirvana can piss off as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, only the most snobby elitist of hipster can dislike the sonic gold that is post-Beatles McCartney: Jet, Band on the Run, Live and Let Die, No More Lonely Nights, My Brave Face, Freedom... You know, those anthems that defined a generation. Is there anything else I'm forgetting? Oh, right...

I love Paul McCartney and The Beatles, but lets not get crazy here. JPJ was a much better bass player and was awesome in TCV. Where is their next album btw?

That being said, I would still take that band with Paul in it.

Would prefer Paul playing with Pearl Jam, Vedder/McCartney duo would make my ears die from joy

I have nothing against either band, but McCartney is past the age where he should be performing rock songs. And I don't mean old people should never play rock, even a few years ago he could probably pull it off, but the last time I saw him he sounded very grandpa-y.

I'd put McCartney right up there. Ahead of Entwistle, actually. Love The Ox, but his is probably the easiest "legend" style I ever mastered. McCartney is more melodic and will do different things. Entwistle, especially live, relied on a handful of signature riffs and fills. Pretty predictable.

Different types of bass players in nearly different eras. McCartney publicized the idea that the bass would carry a melody (I didn't say invented...). That is part of Penny Lane's brilliance. And yet he knew when to back it off into the woodwork to support percussion.

I'd consider them equals at least....

I think I just have a problem with McCartney. He made me cringe even at the opening ceremonies this year. I'm trying to think of a song that the three of them play where it's not cringe-worthy and I can only think of old Beatles numbers.

His monitor was off at the begining well into Hey Jude... Once it kicks in his singing improves markedly.

His singing isnt what it used, he's 70 after all, to be but everything I've heard the last few years aside from the Olympics has been spot on. As to what to sing. How about Helter Skelter?

Seen Paul a few weeks back in St Louis. I can understand why people think Paul is sappy or soft, but he played and sang incredible for anyone who is 70. Get back, Helter Skelter, I've got a feeling...3 hrs with no breaks. The man really is something special to see. I know Grohl is a big fan, and I could see them doing Helter Skelter, Band on the run...not sure what Nirvana song they could do. Perhaps "Sappy"? Aw, Courtney Love is upset about the Nirvana reunion.

Untalented skank biatch says what?

Also, apparently they will be playing a new song they wrote together.

This is seriously one of the whitest things I've ever seen. If you walked around NYC tomorrow, there is like a zero percent chance you would overhear ANY of these artists other than Kanye and Alisha Keys.

Eric Clapton instead of Jay-Z? Are you serious? Not a single latin artist?

It's like a concert put together by the Board of Directors from Chase. I'm sure Jimmy Dolan is somehow to blame for this.

Probably. He might also be a surprise guest to do "Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys.

There's just almost nowhere you can go in New York that would be as white as the artists and audience of this show, you know?

Imagine putting together a major benefit concert for somewhere like Memphis in 1972 and having it be all Big Band and standards from guys like Perry Como and Sinatra.

/Good to see Mick agrees with me. Heh.

Look at the second column, 5 items from the bottom.

(from his Journals).

Love all the Wipers on the list.

Wipers fans on FARK? I'd thought I'd never see the day.... I knew Kurt liked them (and covered Return of the Rat and D-7), but WIPERS FANS ON FARK?!?!?!?!

/greg is super cool, answered an email I sent him on his record site

No, it's not 1968 or 1970 anymore but The Who sure sound a hell of lot better than their horrible Super Bowl set.

obviously

Who is that?

Nobody knows his name. Rumour is he doesn't have one. But he stands in judgement of your post facto discover of modern societal ennui in regards to the fusion of past and...further past acts to be detrimental to the development of new acts...none of which you've ever heard of.

Ahhh. So is it cool to hate Nirvana and the Beatles for their success again? This is getting confusing.

I farking hated Nirvana way back in 1991. I guess that makes me a scenester?

Well then I was a scenester way before it was uncool.

Also fark Nirvana.

Old Man Winter: kingflower: I hope they cover, "Say Say Say".....

Wouldn't surprise me, Nirvana was mainly a cover band anyway.

Nirvana is what you get when a heroin addict hears an album by Alice Donut or Melvins and says "hey, I can do that".

No. No you can't.

I know you think this comment makes you badass, but you're really demonstrating your ignorance. Call him overrated if you want, but the fact is there are only a handful of people who can shred their voice the way Kurt did while still singing on key, while also playing guitar.

I like listening to hip-hop in my car, but for me, it just doesn't work live, it's like pantomine. Mileage varies, of course.

Nirvana killed hair metal stone dead, for that alone they are Rock Gods. Oh, and fark you, Chuck Klosterman.

Damn! is Dave Grohl a kick-ass drummer (though Taylor Hawkins is excellent too). Macca's in good voice, hope he doesn't botch the inevitable Hey Jude finale.

What you're saying is he shouted loud while playing guitar.

NorCalLos: Suckmaster Burstingfoam

You two are totally missing the point. It doesn't matter if Cobain was the greatest musician in the history of the world, a combination of Mozart, Liszt, Miles, Bird, Robert Fripp, Ravi Shankar and John McLaughlin (off the top of my head) or if he sucked worse than Johnny Ramone, HIS BAND KILLED HAIR METAL.

All other points are irrelevant.

I'm not nearly as big of a Nirvana fan as I used to be. I still like them, but after 20 years I don't find myself listening to them as much. My tastes has expanded and I've heard the same four cds for so long now that I hardly find myself listening to them now.

However, I feel the need to defend them. For the people who say Cobain did nothing but scream over screeching guitars; if that is true, then why has no one else been able to do that as successfully as he did? People say anyone could have fronted Nirvana, yet whenever someone covers their songs, it never sounds right. I'm not saying he is the greatest vocalist, or that any of them are the greatest ever with their instruments, but the three of them together were more than the sum of their parts.

And yeah, like them or not, everyone should be grateful that Nirvana not only killed hair metal, they teabagged it and told it they farked its mother.

It's predictable that the "big name" artists who show up for these things are going to mostly be older, established artists who already have piles of money and are starting to worry about their legacies, and would like some more exposure. We should regard ourselves as fortunate that everybody, including the Who and Jagger and Watters* seemed to be in top form last night. Itwas pretty decent, altogether.

*Good GOD is Roger fond of himself. The most punchable face in Rock and Roll, bar none.
