They're a status symbol and have as much value as a piece of jewelry or art.

It seems SB or Gilt Pre-sold them without telling anyone so that none were actually available when the sale started.

In one comment I saw, a guy who averaged $500/month at SB cancelled his loyalty account after customer service refused to get h one of these cards. The whole business is becoming a PR train wreck.

People do the same thing every day whenever they buy Apple products. It's a safety valve, if they weren't buy dumb shiat they'd be throwing money at Stormfront or black nationalist militias.

$5,000 starting bid with zero bids = Selling for $5,000
You can put any price on anything you want. That doesn't guarantee you'll get it.

The production cost includes design, which combined with a small batch, could theoretically explain the high per item production cost. The material itself is probably just a few cents at the very most.

I came here to say that...

US $5,000.00
[ 0 bids ]

That doesn't mean they are selling for $5k writer dolts.... wait until one actually SELLS, then report on it.

Most buy Apple products because they are high quality and work well. In fact, unless you're poor or a hardware enthusiast, I don't know why anyone would buy anything but Apple.

But your point is valid that people need their luxuries in life. I don't need to spend hundreds on an old comic book, but I would if it were one that I wanted.

Yeah, normally. but this is starbucks, they could have a barista vomit into a styrofoam cup and people would still pay too much money for it.

2012-12-12 08:13:00 AM
And by "seliing for $5000" subby and TFA mean that there's an one week-old ebay auction starting at $5,000 with zero bids.

When you have a line of middle aged, bored housewife cows waiting daily for their $8 half-caf no-foam extra-hot six-pump peppermint mochas while each wearing $500 worth of Athleta jeggings, Ugg boots, and Lululemon sport zip-ups, you now have a market where it's plausible to pay $5000 for a gussied up $450 gift card.

Good on these EBay sellers for taking advantage.

$450 "Luxury" Gift Card
$5,000 starting bid on Ebay
Pull some strings with your friends (or pay for services) at a media/Internet firm
Ridiculously overpriced item might get sold, even if not, get lots of exposure for yourself, company

In other words, whether anyone actually bids or buys this card at $5,000 or not, the money is just the icing on the cake. This is more about viral advertising bullshiat.

I have no problem with them buying that shiat, as long as they don;t call it "coffee"

Completed listings show that they are selling between 800-1100 Bones.

Which given that there's $450 already on it, it isn't too unreal of a markup for something thats going to be popular from a company that has its super-fans.

2012-12-12 08:24:21 AM
None of them are selling for $5,000. However a lot have sold for close to $1,000. Just look at eBay's completed listings

/Tickle me Elmo's, Cabbage Patch Kids, unlocked iPhones, etc...etc... I'm never able to bring myself to take advantage of people for quick money.... stupid!

They made 5000, so at $50 a card that comes to $250,000. The steel used was maybe $100? I'm thinking $500 is feasible for labor hours. Not sure how much they would pay for the design but I'm sure at that price it must be generous, not that it's even particularly interesting.

what my Starbucks card looks like.

It costs exactly $0 over what the coffee actually costs.

In before some guy walks into Starbucks with this card..

"Sir the balance on your card is now $380.00"

"$380? What do you MEAN!?!? I paid $5000 for this gift card".

All gift cards are stupid. Just write them a check or give them (gasp) cash. It actually shows more forethought since you can use it anywhere.

Exception for Visa gift cards for people who don't already have a debit or credit card.

Ended: Dec 07, 2012 23:22:15 PST Price: US $1,150.00

Might not be $5k, but the actual paid buying price seems about $800-1300, which will only go up over the short-term...

this is my favorite posting though:
This card is for the Starbucks collector with everything!!! There isONLY $5 on the card NOT $50 only $5.00 , it will be mailed between dec 20-23 depending on how soon it is shipped to me.
This card doesn't even come with the $400 balance, and it's already at $500+ with 6 days remaining, sketchy seller and all!

You could be a hardware enthusiast, there are a lot of them on Fark.

Or I suppose you could be a deluded, hipster sheep that believes everything he reads. Those people exist, too.
