Summer Glau's Love Slave: KPatrickGlover: Critch: It's not Khan. The villian in this is a former member of Starfleet with enhanced abilities, but Khan was never in Starfleet.

It's not Gary Mitchell. Mitchell had psychokinetic powers, not super strength. Mitchell was also killed off in the canon comic book in the second issue.

Garth of Izar is likely, or a new character.

Doesn't have to be a former member of Starfleet, just because he's wearing a Starfleet uniform. Look at Space Seed. Khan was wearing a Starfleet uniform after he was brought aboard.

Oooooo, I hadn't thunked of that. I hope it's Khan as the villain. Just wishful thinking on my part.

/What if Abrams just shot a trailer, loosed it upon fertile fanboy imagination, and is reading all our posts till one of us comes up with an idea that he just loves, and that's how the villain will be decided?

The latest.... Cumberbatch on the new Star Trek Villian...

Speaking with MTV News, Cumberbatch pulled the curtain back on his "Trek" role, but not at the expense of revealing the character's true purpose and motivation. "He's a terrorist; he operates as a terrorist," said the British actor. "He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers. He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he's masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation. It's quite exciting to watch."

2 things:

1. Peter Weller is too old for me to like him as kahn. I think he's got the chops and all. I don't know how I am supposed to look at him and think him a physical specimin capable of handing Kirk his ass. If they went that route I wouldn;t hate it till i saw it. I just know, off the cuff, that "notsureifwant.jpeg".

2.

HulkHands: JJ Abrams after season 2 of Lost: "no, they're not in purgatory"
producers after Lost's final season: "they were in purgatory"

JJ Abrams when Star Trek Into Darkness started filming: "no, the bad guy isn't Khan"
...

****LOST SPOILERS****

Ok. For the 100th god damned time. They were NOT IN PURGATORY ON THE ISLAND. HOLY MOLY. Seriously, all you have to do to troll me is post something like that. For some reason it really gets my geek dander up. Nothing personal dude, i swear.

What happened on the island HAPPENED. PERIOD. Everything you saw that was not on the Island was "the afterlife". It was way past when any of them were alive. You want to call that purgatory? fine. It still happened AFTER the Island and AFTER Hurley was caretaker for the Island (lord only knows how long that actually was)

Cumberbatch is going to play Lore. Maybe time-travelled or invented super early. He's a canon character, but toally unexpected. He is there to save his android family after Data's death in Nemesis.

The subsequent sentence sounds a lot more like Khan (who managed to lure an Enterprise crewmember into his group) than it does Gary Mitchell. I don't think he's talking about telekinesis or anything like that.

No it didn't. FYI, Stories suck when they lack any semblance of flow from start to finish. And also lack a finish. The conflict and the plot were guessing games.

Lost wasn't a show - it was a room full of hacks tossing hooks into the sea without an attached line.
"heres an idea!, should i run with it?"
"Hell no - pop it into the next episode at the 25 minute mark and then we will never mention it again. IT WILL BE MYSTERYIOUSYISH!!!"

------------------------------------------------------

I suspect the trek is about space seed. Exept it wasn't the enterprise that intercepted it. And Khan didn't survive but one of his contemporaries did. And the guy takes control of a federation ship and returns to earth to kick ass and take names. The enterprise returns to find a megalomaniac destroying home. Enter kirk stage right, breaking faces at a blinding pace...

I will always be pissed they never followed up on that... especially with the transmission sent out at the end. Pretty amazing that they were able to get away with this in syndication. At the time it aired you would never have been able to air this on one of the major networks...

They kinda-sorta did. The Borg ended up being the large threat instead of the bug species from Conspiracy.

However, the Conspiracy parasites did get a story followup in some of the DS9 novels and ended up being some rebel faction of Trills, or something.

My mom tore through all the TNG and Voyager stuff but couldn't get into DS9. I suggested skipping forward to the middle of season 2 (218 or 219, I think). Mainly because it's right before the first Mirror Universe episode and the introduction of The Dominion. She's almost done with the series now.

And regarding TNG: Look for Riker's beard and the high uniform collars. That's about the time the show found its footing.

Star Trek has always worked better on television. One of the worst things about the new Trek movies is that it means we probably won't be getting new TV Trek anytime soon, and if we do it will be along the lense flare action movie variety.

Given recent TV trends, I would expect more of a "Walking Trek" scenario. Starts off seeming like a sci-fi show that quickly devolves to whiny characters complaining about their sandy vagoos while existing in a world of sci-fi background scenery. Not developing characters, just complainy ones.

I think you're right about the second season of DS9. I think some of the episodes in the first two-thirds of the season are actually more satisfying after you know more about the characters, such as "Cardassians" -- you get more out of it after having seen the Garak-Dukat feud developed more. And "Armageddon Game" is better when you know that the episode that initiated the Bashir-O'Brien friendship, which is the emotional heart of the show (the writers never get enough credit for how well they developed that, making in genuine and never sentimental).

The show really became a roller coaster in season 3. In "Second Skin" Garak pretty much becomes everyone's favorite character: "Oh, it was just something I overheard while I was hemming someone's trousers."

2012-12-12 07:29:30 PM
Ricardo Montalbán was 56 when the original "Space Seed" aired. Benedict Cumberbatch is 36 now. I don't think he's playing Khan.

They already did a Gary Mitchell comic. If they really wanted Cumberbatch to be Mitchell, wouldn't they have drawn him (Mitchell) to look like Cumberbatch in the comic?

My guess is that "John Harrison" was a crewman on the enterprise when it went through the barrier, but he wasn't affected as severely as Gary MItchell. I also suspect that Peter Weller is either Khan (awakened 10 years earlier due to the new timeline) or somehow his character from Enterprise.

So why does Harrison want revenge? He's either part of Khan's crew and a sleeper agent in Starfleet, or a disciple of Weller's Enterprise character.

That's my guess, anyway.

They picked it up of if a couple one of The DS9 novels The Lives of Dax, Unity, and Unjoined(spoilers: it's a genetically altered trill symbiont). I agree that they should have done some followup on it, though.

Wellon Dowd: simplicimus: Anyone remember the plot device that sent Enterprise across the barrier?

Mitchell was Kirk's best friend until he was changed by the barrier. I don't see how they can make him go bad in a different time and place without it seeming really forced. More importantly, why take characters from the alternative time line to some hardcore fans happy and then change their nature? Most of the people who are going to pay to see this movie have no idea who Gary Mitchell is. Use the alternative-timeline-reboot to explore new characters and new stories.

It should be noted that they've already addressed the Mitchell character in the revamped Abrams universe. It was in graphic novel form, but it's canon. I cannot, for the life of me, remember the name, or how it ended, however.

Ok tinyarena.... I am not as cynical about the movie as you seem to be.... No matter how completely absurd the story was... It's Sybok; Spock's brother from Star Trek V.

1) "He has extraordinary physical powers..."
Sybok is a Vulcan, which explains the strength, and the fighting prowess.

2) "...but also mental powers."
From Wikipedia: "Sybok has a mental ability to reveal and repair the innermost pain of a person, and uses it to gain the trust of the hostages and most of Enterprise's crew."

3) "He tears into the fabric of both the world..."
Sybock lost his homeworld, and the Federation must pay.

4) "...and the Enterprise family"
In Star Trek V, even McCoy and Spock were influenced by Sybok's mental powers to the point where they commuted mutiny. With the help of the crew, Sybock took control of the Enterprise, which sort of covers Cumberbatch's "terrorist" talking point, and the tearing of the Enterprise family.

5) Watch the trailer again Link. This time take a really long look at the villain's ears at the 24 and 46 second mark. It's extremely subtle, but his ears look pointed, at least to me. The villain wears a hood through the rest of the trailer, but for about 4 seconds you can see his ears.

He says he is back, who left in this universe? If it's Gary Mitchel it may not be the Gary Mitchel character that gets the brain boost. Could be another crewman, after all this is a different universe then the series.I'm guessing Khan myself why? Carol Marcus is in it she is tied to the Wrath. Wrath of Khan was the 2nd movie of the franchise and most popular he may be copying the formula.
