That's Uhura's hand touching the glass opposite Spock's hand, as they are a couple in this ST universe. Nothing to see here, move along, Citizen.

Or, you know, you could scroll down on the Fark page and read that they have revealed the name of his character and it's not Kahn or Gary Mitchell.

Now, that too could be a ruse of course, but it's what we know for now.

What does Gary Mitchell need with a big-assed gun?

At the end of the first Star Trek reboot film, they said Kirk and the Enterprise was about to embark on its 5 year mission. I bet we'll have an opening sequence on how the Enterprise came across reboot-Khan, stranded him, and then after the title shot we fast forward a few years with reboot-Khan looking for vengeance.

I'm a long time fan of Star Trek and generally really liked the last movie. The only thing I didn't care for was the idiotic speed with which Kirk became Captain.

But the Spock / Uhura thing I thought was genius. I don't know why, but it almost felt like it should always have been that way.

Given the stricken look on Kirk's face in the cut just before that, and the color of the sleeve in the shot, I'm pretty sure that it's Kirk's hand.

Who has wrath? Khan. What does wrath do? It flares. What also flares? A lens. What are lenses used for? To make movies. Who makes movies? JJ Abrams. Therefore -- the movie is about Khan.

QED biatches.

Although a movie about Gary Mitchell would be pretty cool, I don't think Cumberbatch is playing him. I really hate fan speculation, so I'll leave it at that.

Gary Mitchell? So despite being in an alternative timeline, and some number of years earlier, something is going to turn Mitchell from Kirk's best friend into a genocidal monster and possibly give him superhuman powers?

Could be an elaborate plan by JJ Abrams to throw us off the scent though.

Link to relevant article.

The same article also states that Roberto Orci included Gary Mitchell in a list of characters who would NOT be in the movie. So the producers are going out of their way to throw up smokescreens and encourage rabid speculation.

And it appears to be working.

It was literally a machine called The Plot Device, invented by the Klingons to destroy the Federation.

Mitchell was Kirk's best friend until he was changed by the barrier. I don't see how they can make him go bad in a different time and place without it seeming really forced. More importantly, why take characters from the alternative time line to some hardcore fans happy and then change their nature? Most of the people who are going to pay to see this movie have no idea who Gary Mitchell is. Use the alternative-timeline-reboot to explore new characters and new stories.

That episode made little sense anyway. The whole crew goes through the barrier and only 2 turn into demi-gods?

I believe that both of them had some kind of prior history of psychic abilities/affinities. Abilities that played little further part in Star Trek, I think.

Also, here's a good reason why it isn't Gary Mitchell:

The first movie had a series of comic book tie-ins released that were canonical to this timeline. One of those included Gary Mitchell. Yep, he still gained his god-like powers, and yep he was still killed. Supposedly it took place before the events of the reboot. I'm not exactly sure because I'm not that geeky to have actually got this, but I've heard about it.

As a longtime Trek fan who really did enjoy the 2009 reboot, I have to say this:

Congrats, Abrams, your playing footsie with the fans made me apathetic to the franchise again. Stop it with all this 'what a tweest' B.S. and tell us a goddamn story already.

Well it all depends on what they are counting as canon or not.

To use the Star Wars Expanded Universe as an example; All EU stuff is canon... till George Lucas said it wasn't. The movies trumped all.

They could easily say the same thing for the Star Trek Expanded Universe too.

Is there any history of non-television/film material being canon for Star Trek, aside from the 2009 film's comic prequel? Hell, even the animated series is barely considered canon.
