I personally think all black female weather forecasters should have a giant 70's Pam Grier 'fro. Sure it makes it hard to see the maps, but it looks outta sight.

She should blow up the station with some Dyn-O-Myte!!

She sold out for Jackie Brown.

Dear Emmitt -
Sorry your cracker ass has nothing better to concern yourself with.

That said, her response was great and she will have no problem finding another job.
The lawsuit and bad PR they will get for this should be amusing.

Vascocu replied that Lee was right to be proud of who she is and that he is not a racist, but ". . . this world has . . . certain standerd (cq). if youve come from a world of being poor are you going to dress in rags?. . ."

"I understand you're black. But do you have to look so black?"

Thus confirming the "I'm not a racist, but..." law.

I take it you've never seen Remeisha Shade on NBC/KXAS in Dallas/Ft Worth?

I don't get through a day with out someone stopping me on the street about a hair comment. Polite concerned citizens have to tell me how when they don't wash their hair for days their own hair gets that curly.

It appears she was formerly on a station in Austin, which is a much larger market than Shreveport. She either isn't very good at her job or voluntarily took a pay cut for some reason.

Am I missing something or did the viewer make a perfectly non-racist comment about short hair? So he's mad and doesn't like short hair... and the meteorologist replies "I'm sorry you don't like my ethnic hair, i'm very proud of my ancestry..." blah blah...
Seems to me nothing racist was implied, yet it was inferred by the meteorologist. I don't think she handled it well at all.

2012-12-12 11:15:35 AM
Maybe her skin wasn't soft as leather. Or there were others more dedicated. Maybe she wasn't addicted to the love of herself. Or she told others. She is not the weatherman

He referred to her as "the black lady that does the news." He may not have meant that as a racial reference, but I can see that triggering a racial response.

Ah yes, I suppose that's tricky. It's perfectly acceptable to describe someone as black, they might have 2 weather girls, one black one white, so to say the black one is a perfectly cromulent descriptor. However it's almost impossible to know the mind of the person who said it, it could be have been meant in a derogatorily racist fashion. We'll never know... unless he writes a follow up comment, talking about cotton fields.

I thought the "If youve [sic] come from a world of being poor are you going to dress in rags" followup made his intentions pretty clear, personally.

Oh Jebus.. someone said something negative about a black person.

They must be total racists.

This chick is totally OK to be "proud of her heritage".. but boy oh boy.. a white person says that..

and heads all over the nations assplodes and says they had their KKK robe on while saying it.

STFU. GBTW.

You're not dancing around the savannah waiting for the tribesman to return with a slaughtered wildebeast, sweetheart, so let's not groom like it. You're in the 21st century in a western society, its ok to leave your roots at the door.

This reads like it was written by a UFO nutcase: We don't actually know what policy she violated or why she was fired, so it's obviously because she's black.

I'm not sayin' it's racism, but it's racism!

2012-12-12 12:49:24 PM
Oh, she definitely needs to get herself an attorney and litigate the hell out of this one and profit. Employment law 101, page one: If the policy isn't in writing or if it is in writing and you cannot prove that the employee has officially acknowledged the policy, you cannot fire the employee for cause for having violated it.

I wish more Black more would go natural. There's much they can do with it without straightening it.

"They told me the policy I violated isn't written down, but was mentioned in a newsroom meeting about a month-and-a-half prior. A meeting I didn't attend. So when I asked what rule did I break there isn't anything to point to."

It was me, I'd ask a couple friendly co-workers who DID attend that meeting if they happened to remember anything being stated to the effect of 'polite replies to questions from viewers will not be tolerated'.

Indeed. The fired her for violating a policy about responding on social media...a policy they never briefed her about or put in writing.

Doesn't seem fair to me.

1. She is kinda cute
2. There has GOT to be more to this story - either that or the station is hoarding a lifetime supply of weapons grade stupid.

I call that "fiat policy" and it is one of my favorite things to club inept management with.

If you didn't write it down in this here policy manual, or let us know in one of them there "policy memos" then it ain't policy. It's just some shiat you pulled out of your ass right now.

If that's a feminine name, then you're going to attract a rather specific sub-set of men...
Maybe they just think they'll sell you more perfume?

Station probably just wanted to get rid of her, and this is the excuse. It happens all the time when they want to get rid of someone under contract (assuming she was. Most small market talent is under contract)

I'm thinking management had been praying for a reason to fire here and they finally found their chance.

I'd like to hear some inside gossip about all of this...the whole "fly on the wall" around the newsroom.

She runs 25 miles a week. If I did that kind of running, I would have the same hairstyle because any kind of long hair is a PITA when you are training a lot (I've never trained that much in a week in my life, even).

That said, wtf do you care how a woman wants to style her hair? It's her choice.

It's more about not being good at actually presenting the information, or not having good community relations (like this little episode, apparently).

2012-12-12 01:10:55 PM
It could be that management was looking for any excuse to fire her because they just didn't like her. Or I could be projecting.
