I can't see a reason they need to be spheres. Little round arks is all they are. Wouldn't something more boat-like be the cat's pajamas in a flood scenario? You can still seal a boat if you need to, but I'd think there would be better ways to ensure you have air than oxygen tanks and a sealed compartment.

Also: Try Chinese oxygen! It's the chunkiest!

you just need a co2 scrubber and some soda lime and a little oxygen tank can go a long long ways http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soda_lime come to think of it an oxygen analyzer would be bit helpful as well.

In theory, these things shouldn't need to be airtight for very long: just enough to float to the surface. Of course, that only helps if you're riding out a flood rather than falling into a giant crack in the Earth, but like you said with the thinking all the way through and such.
