Scythed: He's almost correct. Really, it's the fault of the media for being so obsessed with the trivial matters of the Royal Family that they're willing to devote a significant amount of their available coverage to the issue. They endlessly skewered the hospital for being incompetent when this 'prank' happened, but now that the woman killed herself it's the DJ's fault for making her feel bad? If the media hadn't reported on the issue, she would have been mildly embarrassed when she found out that she had been tricked. But when the worldwide press feels that the mistake you made at your desk job regarding pregnancy of some powerless aristocrat is more important than war, famine, or disease, how can you not feel absolutely overwhelmed by the gravity of the situation?

It's sickening.

Suicide still means you kill yourself, right? Not sure how that can ever really be someone else's fault.

Mimekiller: I have never been a fan of any band/singer outside of their work. Never.

gadian:

Sure she was going to probably get fired and probably not going to be able to work at a hospital for quite a while thanks to some dicks. But her suicide was on her.

Nope. The hospital stated they hadn't taken any action nor did they intend to. Also Buckingham Palace stated they hadn't made a complaint or given the matter a second thought. The nurse wasn't in any kind of trouble.

We won't know why the nurse killed herself, I seriously doubt it was a result of just this one phone call though.

That's pathological, he should probably get help.

moel: Morrissey actually makes me feel ashamed to British, the twatbag.

But Tony Blair, the Spice Girls, Benny Hill, BP, the legacy of colonization and slavery in the name of empire-building, and having generations upon generations of inbred white trash living off the public teat at Buckingham Palace and beyond are still points of pride, correct?

While he is a twat, he has succeeded in getting us to talk about him once again.

Jacintha Saldanha killed Jacintha Saldanha.

This is one of the most absurd things ever.

The media killed this woman, moreso than these DJs, and here they are, still talking about it.

Morrissey. An artist you think think is deep, intellectual, and talented.

Then you turn 12.

This part could be right...

"And I'm sure the Palace and Clarence House (Princess of Wales residence) put maximum pressure on this poor receptionist and nurse, and of course that's kept away from the press. I'm sure the British press hounded this poor woman to her death, that's kept away."

2012-12-12 08:56:24 AM
Regardless of who "made Jacintha Saldanha kill herself", it was a stupid and malicious prank that wasn't funny on paper and was even less so in practice.

I'm no fan of the royals, but how the hell is it Kate's fault? She didn't crank call the nurse, the DJs did. And he's making wild accusations about Buckingham Palace putting pressure on her not to talk to the media...WHY WOULD SHE? The hospital probably put more pressure on the nurse than anything else.

Its disgusting he's using this poor woman's death as an excuse for his anti-royal grandstanding.

And how the hell can he accuse Kate of having anorexia or not really having morning sickness? Its called hyperemesis gravidarum, you stupid, overrated, willfully ignorant sack of shiat. There's something called Google, try using it.

whizbangthedirtfarmer: Listened to the BBC for a bit yesterday. Interestingly, the manufactured outrage isn't about mental illness, or prank phone calls, but that the DJs DARED to call the hospital where Middleton was staying. They viewed it as an affront to Middleton's privacy. That a woman offed herself wasn't even really a part of the conversation.

That actually seems reasonable to me. I can't blame the DJs for one nurse's tragically out-of-proportion response. But I can blame them for calling a hospital and bugging them for info about a sick patient. Because that's gross.

But when it's not a two-bit shock jock DJ from Australia doing a lame act and is instead the mainstream British press glorifying and then hounding them at every step of the way, it becomes perfectly acceptable. I get the logic, but the hypocrisy was astounding.

LiquidSky: Nina_Hartley's_Ass: Legally the djs should be protected by free speech/press considerations though morally I have objections to fncking with a CAREGIVER AT A HOSPITAL or non-public figures in general. I imagine they've suffered enough and no one could have foreseen this outcome.

Blaming Middleton is just idiotic and says more about a certain pretentious douche than it does about her.
The royals might be a bunch of assholes who should be run out of town on a rail but not because they get prenatal care.

I'm going to guess you're American ... the right to free speech as you're thinking of it doesn't exist in Australia.

But actually that's beside the point, since it's not a free-speech issue at all. The DJ's recorded and broadcast a telephone call without consent of the other parties. That is against the law in certain Aussie states (and the show was broadcast nationally, so all state laws apply). The station has given a bunch of semi-conflicting excuses:
- they tried to contact the hospital 5 times
- their in-house lawyers approved the tape before the station broadcast it
- the phone call was to the UK, so Aussie law doesn't apply anyway.

I do agree that the DJ's have suffered enough. The station though ... I hope they get the book thrown at them.

Morrissey takes himself WAY too seriously. And has obviously got no idea this is a medical condition not just morning sickness. And he can be such a pretentious twatmuddle.

And the radio station has an incredible history of appalling behaviour. That douchiest of all frat wannabes Sandilands being behind 99% of them.

/ was surprised it wasn't him
// he's probably seething in his prissy fat manner that they are getting all the attention dammit, notice MMMEEEE

nigeman:
The Djs are actors. They knew the rules and they decided to ignore them. They were all tears when asked about the nurse but when asked about why the rules weren't followed they because very precise in their wording and the tears stopped.

Did anyone notice in the interviews how coached they had been? Both of them kept using the phasing "hope her family is getting the love and support they need", or "as long as they are getting the love and support they need". It was so obvious from even the cops on the news they had been super carefully coached. Lawyers, natch.

/ Morrissey, some of your music is transcendent. But you are still a pretentious twatwaffle.

Mainly what I get out of this is that Austrailian nurses seem to be alarmingly congenial. Even if an American nurse did think it was the Queen of England on the end of the line, they would tell her to go fark herself with her questions because she's has to go take her smoke break and get the scoop from her co-worker how her date went last night.

Was the nurse really under threat of being fired? If so, she probably would have a civil case against the radio station, if not the hospital for wrongful dismissal ("Damnit Jim! I'm a doctor, not a receptionist!").

If she wasn't, and even if she was - to a degree, as someone said upthread she probably had a number of issues and sooner or later would have snapped at something. It's like blaming a mass shooting on the latest movie, video game, or comic book. If it wasn't said piece of media that caused one to snap, it would have been something else. Guaranteed.

I don't blame the DJs for pushing this woman to commit suicide. I blame them for being complete douchebags.

I love how stupid people look when they try to be armchair lawyers.

So... how could the actions of the DJ be wrongful termination? Because they didn't dismiss her.

This is more an aside than anything, but I don't believe she would only have been "mildly embarrassed" after the fact. I don't know if the UK has something similar to HIPAA, but she almost certainly would've lost her job and likely been sued as well. Breach of patient confidentiality is a huge, HUGE no-no in the medical field. I'd be willing to think that some underlying issues she had, combined with her looming termination, probably played more to her committing suicide than the media coverage. I'm not saying it didn't make the situation worse for her, but I do think she may still have taken her life even without it.

2012-12-13 07:05:33 PM
The DJ's did nothing wrong - nothing.

If you want to argue otherwise, we have to throw "Punk'd" into the same pot as well as all the video shows that celebrate doing stupid sh*t to your "friends". No pranking - no matter how trivial - should ever be done by any medium including radio, TV, etc.

Yep, let's make any prank illegal. Ahhh...feel the freedom.

In fact, let's make humor illegal - it's always teasing some person(s), faction and general human behaviour. Somebody out there might be offended. The horror.

Call someone 4-eyes, 10 years minimum prison time. Jesus.

Bathia_Mapes: Hyperemesis gravidarum is not normal morning sickness, you douchenozzle.  Maybe you should get your head out of your ass and get informed before you speak.

Pregnant women who have the rare condition are unable to maintain an adequate intake of food and fluids.  That's not just harmful for the woman, but for her developing fetus too, for obvious reasons.

Normal treatments for morning sickness don't work for women with hyperemesis gravidarum.  They generally need IVs to rehydrate, plus medications to stop the vomiting.

You have no idea of what you're talking about. A little less Wikipedia this time, K? Thx.

Assf*cker.
