We appear to be running out of talent born after 1960.

Here we go again. Another thread full of people whining about their own shiatty taste in music.

What is the big deal with that Frank Ocean album? I've heard some of it and it just seems like good R&B - nice but certainly not the type of album that should make the top of so many best of the year lists.

Wow, how freshia

they really should be giving some attention to living musicians.

No "Bad As Me?"

That's a little disappointing.

Here's a consolidation of 43 different top album lists, including the top ten from all 43 lists.

Still have to check out the Mould album. Probably pick it up tomorrow.

Well shiat. I am getting old. My perception of time is dulling.

Oh shiat. I knew I was getting old, and liked music by old people for old people. I guess it never occurred to me that The Onion was getting old too.

Critics used to fall all over themselves to slobber kanye west before he broke through. Now he has become too popular to make these lists.

Bob Mould is having a remarkable third act in an industry where getting a first try is usually a miracle.

2012-12-11 10:18:59 PM
And yeah, I have to admit that the new Mountain Goats album made a fan out of me and I listened to it expecting to hate it because the press for it talked the songs up as another white person dealing with depression by writing sad songs. Not seeing it on the list was kind of surprising.

New York band Pilot To Gunner released one of the best independent rock records of the decade in 2004, Get Saved, then promptly toured itself to death.

So, right off the bat, completely cookie cutter "indie" shiat, noted as "one of the best independent rock records of the decade". Kill yourself!

Pssh. Everybody knows that music achieved perfection in 1974. It's a scientific fact.

Hell, it's almost a fourth when you consider his poorly-received electronic phase in the early '00s. At any rate, it's an outstanding album, and he deserves all the attention and then some.

Since the avalanche of best-of lists has started, I'm going to save time by skipping over any that don't have Fiona Apple at #1.

Since you didn't say what year, I'm going to assume.. let's say 1972.

Great release by Mould.

He also released Copper Blue.

It's REALLY good R&B. The kind you don't really see anymore.

I've only seen Cat Power once; I was either 19 or 20 and it was at a music festival, but for a girl wearing a drab long-sleeved shirt and jeans, something about her performance took my mind to weird places. I would have given BOTH testicles and let her put out her cigarettes on my anus just to have her drag me backstage.

Yeah, that was my reaction a couple months ago when an old classmate hipped me to him. Started me on a whole kick with the various soul revival labels (Daptone, Truth & Soul, etc.)

It's entirely possible this is the last Cohen album will ever see, aside from some vault recordings after he dies.

Enjoy it now. I am.

Whoa, you're serious about the Swans... haven't listened to them since I was getting music recommendations from the original Vampire: The Masquerade book. Did not figure they were still around...

To be fair, Tom Waits' album is nominated for a 2013 grammy. So it was released in 2011, made the 2011 album lists, but qualifies for the 2013 grammys. Makes sense to me. Gotye's album was released in August 2011 and qualifies for the upcoming grammy's too.

They remind me A LOT of the Decemberists. Especially the tone of the lead vocals.

wow... i guess i stopped paying attention to music. several of my favorite bands/musicians put out new albums this year.

/ whoops
// off to buy leonard cohen, bob dylan, and cat power albums... that should be enough pop music for the year...
/// i usually just look for, but never buy, unique recordings of eastern european string quartets -- my plan is to someday think about buying, but never actually buy, every recording of the string quartets of smetena, janacyk, shostakovich, and bartok.

OK, I am just going to toss this out there but is it me or does every band on Merge have a bassist that sucks. There is almost no decent basslines and forget any songs that make you want to dance.

SlothB77: They remind me A LOT of the Decemberists. Especially the tone of the lead vocals.

I haven't ever really heard the Decemberists but the Mountain Goats have been around for a pretty long time so if anything the Decemberists took a lot of cues from them and you should give them money to continue making music.
