Yeah, no worries. I'm glad people like it. There's also Pier 39 in San Francisco, and "Bubba Gumps" is very popular with tourists there. Good on them! (The restaurant *and* the customers) Really. No sarcasm at all. It's a restaurant, not a religious experience!

Look, not every dining experience needs to be Instagram-worthy. Er, I mean Michelin-worthy. You put a restaurant in one of the most pedestrian-trafficked places in one of the busiest and most popular city on the world, you're gonna get some customers, unless you're some complete idiot.

In the words of Ron Swanson: "A burger. On a bun. With nothing." Hey, that might draw crowds too.

Look. I work on Times Square. One of those big media high rises right on it. Down on the street you have street 'performers' wearing unlicensed costumes for SpongeBob and Elmo and all kinds of stupid bullshiat, and half a dozen Naked Cowboys now, all looking for money. I thank my lucky starts we have a cafeteria in the building so I can avoid the mess getting lunch.

Times Square is a bullshiat place. It's strictly for tourists. But hell, I don't mind. It brings tons of money into the city. It's just bullshiat for tourists who have no taste and are too chickenshiat to try out more legitimate experiences and restaurants all over the city. They can have it.

I've eaten at Tex Wasabi, Guy's restaurant here in Sacramento. It was an awful experience from top to bottom. The food was overpriced and gross, the service was bad, the place looked ridiculous, and to top it all off, they had really bad and really loud karaoke that night.

Yeah, kind of like how there's this hole-in-the-wall seafood place right on the commercial fishing docks in my hometown that's ranked as one of the top seafood restaurants in the country by Travel+Leisure, yet my relatives come to town and insist on Red Lobster. There's no accounting for the tastes of tourists.

When I lived in SF the only time I ever went to Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square or Alcatraz was when my mom came to visit.

I don't get how this is a bad thing.

You wanna know why people go to chains while on vacation? They want something familiar. They're a bit homesick, and want to eat something like they get back home. Yeah, sure they'll try a new restaurant, something local or a one of a kind place, but in the end, what they really want is that sense of familiarity.

Also, McD? Go get a freshly made Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese at 2 in the morning and tell me that's not the most delicious burger you've ever had.

It ain't about being a food snob. There's nothing wrong with well-cooked burger and steak. It's that Fieri's place ain't that great (according to reviews) and ain't cheap either.

People go to these places because of Man On TV. They're idiots that assume that Jamie Oliver is a fricking genius because he's cooking on TV, when in reality, TV selects based on how well you perform on TV (it took years for Simon Hopkinson to get on TV despite being a head chef because he wasn't much of a natural performer). There's thousands of guys can do what Jamie Oliver does, but people go to Jamie's Italian rather than a local pizzeria that does the job cheaper and with more charm.

The other part of that is that sometimes, these shows let you in on a place you wouldn't normally have gone to. When I went back home a while back, I went to Alice Cooper's Cooperstown restaurant, and had one of the better sandwiches I've had in...some time, in all honesty. Does that make me a bad person?

Not so much familiarity and homesickness - it's that you know what you're going to get.

It's what the anti-brand folks can never grasp. Sure, that small, independent coffee shop might be awesome, but it also might be terrible. They might allow drum circles to perform (yes, I've had this) or surly staff (this too). I know that I can walk into Caffe Nero and get a good cup of coffee in pleasant surroundings, so in a strange town that's what I do. On the other hand, in a place I visit regularly, I will take some chances and find the excellent coffee place.

Of course, I'm also the type that will seek out a small, locally owned, and well reviewed place if I'm on vacation.

That's something people need to learn to do. Go to Urban Spoon, Yelp or any number of restaurant review sites if you want something good while you're on vacation. In fact...if anybody from Fort Wayne knows a good place, I'm looking for sugestions. The Mrs. and I are going there in February for a concert.

I'm not talking about Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. That might highlight great local places. I'm talking about people connecting a person presenting TV cookery shows, who often then create chains of expensive, mediocre restaurants trading on their name. Now, if you're eating at Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons, run by Raymond Blanc, who presents on TV, you will get an awesome meal, because he's got 2 Michelin stars. He knows his shiat more than most chefs out there. Jamie Oliver was a sous-chef who got noticed by a TV production company when they were doing a documentary because of his personality. Which doesn't mean he can't cook - he can. But so can thousands of other chefs out there.

What is the pricing at the hole-in-the-wall seafood place, I'm sure the food tastes better, but perhaps your out of town guests can't afford it (or fear they can't afford it). It's also entirely possible that your guests are slack-jawed mid-west yokels with unrefined tastes.
