TypoFlyspray: Gunny Highway: TypoFlyspray: Because of all the awesome hard rocking bands from Cleveland like....?

[4.bp.blogspot.com image 400x377]

Fair enough. Never heard of them, but if they're from the musical desert that's been the last 2 decades, that's no surprise. My failing, not theirs.

The Black Keys
Devo
Boz Scaggs
The Breeders,
Guided by Voices
Afghan Whigs
The Cramps
Rocket From the Tombs
The Devil Wears Prada
Mushroomhead

All from the Dayton/Akron/Cleveland area.

If you haven't heard Ass Ponys (sic) or Scrawl or Death of Samantha or Pere Ubu or Cobra Verde, I'd give 'em a tryout.

Oh, and if you like the Whigs, you might wanna give a listen to their frequent show openers Howlin' Maggie (whose leader, Harold "Happy" Chichester provided vocals, songwriting and various instruments to Gentlemen and Black Love and was also a founding member of Dulli's post-Whigs band The Twilight Singers.)

Also worth checkin' out is Chichester's first band The Royal Crescent Mob (for whom the Whigs often opened in their salad days).

Im sure the Dayton bands played in Cleveland. They are rock stars and they love the road, okay!

Rush is still relevant, they still put out albums that sell, they still pack arenas on every tour...why are they going into a place where it's filled with washed up has beens that play county fairs and dead folks?

As for extant bands/artists:

(I don't like 'em all, but maybe you will.)

Cleveland Rocks.

Lemme take a second to address Rush.

I like Rush. A Lot. I enjoy their musical virtuosity enough to overlook their frequently overly pedantic lyrics and their silly flirtations with the dessicated corpse of Ayn Rand. I like their overall body of work well enough that I will even forgive them Presto.

I have seen them in concert a couple of times, and they formed a goodly chunk of the soundtrack of my adolescence. 2112, Moving Pictures, and (gods forgive me) Power Windows are among my favorite albums.

If this "Honor" had anything to do with Rock and Roll, they would deserve it.

When they were coming to Nissan Pavillion on 9/9/12, my wife really wanted to go see them, and I went out on youtube to see how they were doing lately...

I like Rush enough to have tried to sing them in Karaoke on a number of occasions (Subdivisions and Red Barchetta). As the result of concert clips from 2008, I can say that I sounded just like Geddy Lee. I'm a baritone.

Sorry, man, you're a great bassist, but time is a bastard, and he's caught up with your vocal cords.

Not really a fan, but I agree they belong without a doubt.

You're right. That was unfair of me. Sorry.

Cleveland is the site of the museum.... Cleveland inhabitants appreciate Rock N Roll. The music is part of their culture.... Canton is the site of the Football Hall of Fame, but thats doesn't mean because all the inductees are from Canton.

WMMS, Trans Buzzard Airwaves in Cleveland was an excellent AOR station in the 70's and 80's. WMMS broke Rush to the US market. If you haven't Rush's dvd Beyond the Lighted Stage and you like Rush you should see it.

stupiddream: WMMS, Trans Buzzard Airwaves in Cleveland was an excellent AOR station in the 70's and 80's.

One of the things I liked about going to Cleveland to visit my uncle and his family back then was being able to listen to The Buzzard. My part of Virginia has always been a black hole as far as good radio is concerned(we still only have two rock stations; one is owned by Clear Channel and the other one has just started running Cumulus' 24/7 classic rock programming), so it was quite refreshing to hear a real rock station, even if it was just for a few days.

jeffreyh: The HoF's board is notoriously biased in favor of blacks. Whites (particularly of the Appalachian persuasion) are passed on for any black man who's ever picked up a guitar. Even if their motive is to draw visitors, they can't be credible by overemphasizing acts like Michael Jackson or Donna Summer who have contributed to rock-and-rock as much as my left nut. Year after year they lose favor amongst worthy musicians, and when they run out of half-dead jazzmen and pop stars, the people who remember the jackleg future inductees' will laugh.

It's almost like rock and roll is related to black culture! We all know rock and roll is white music after all! It's almost as bad as Public Enemy (from that other white genre, hip hop) getting in, they of course had no influence on modern rock, nope, not at all.

Rush fan and musician here. Like all musicians I know, don't give a single crap about whether or not Rush is in the RRHOF.

Here's to hoping they don't show up for it and shatter the illusion of integrity.

Whites are what make rock music, not rock-and-roll and not a handful of black musicians. Certainly not Public Enemy, Run DMC, Jackson 5, Prince, or Donna Summer. Check list of past inductees: at the current rate, Nelly and Rihanna will be inducted in 20 years.

From a very technical standpoint, there needs to be a separate Hall for "rock" music which doesn't overemphasize jazz and RnR; and doesn't include pop, hip-hop, or even heavy metal.

Very ironic that you'd say that me being racial caused my post to auto-fail! Considering that both Run DMC and Public Enemy were racist rap groups, you proved my point exactly. Thank you. Just like the others who have quoted me, you haven't addressed half of what I stated. So I tempt you: do it.

Oh Jesus. What point do you even have? Stop letting black people into the hall? Only let in a specific kind of rock? No one addressed those points because it's your asinine opinion.
