Yeah, Kraftwerk getting the shaft again is pretty lame, they are far more influential to just about every genre of music than most people will give them credit for.

Just remember, Nirvana becomes eligible in 2014 thanks to releasing an album in 1989. I hope that they induct them along with ANY 80s hair metal band who's career was destroyed the moment Nevermind was released.

No problem with PE being recognized - their influence goes well beyond rap music I don't think you can say the same thing about Donna Summer - I guess she has a couple of songs that were covered by other bands outside of disco (I think that has more to do with Giorgio Moroder than with her)

I'm sure there are more.

For a long long time, heavy metal was considered beneath serious musical criticism - that's starting to change now so you can expect those bands to get in in the next few years.

Maiden and Priest sat least. Not holding my breath for the others (more fun to list the guys that should be in there but have no shot).

If Kiss gets in for "their stage act alone" then GWAR should too, right?

TypoFlyspray: Donna Summers and Public Enemy over Deep Purple? fark that shiat.

Establishment to be Reamed Not Actually Much to Do with Rock And Roll Hall of Critic Validation.

I mean, Blue Öyster Cult isn't there. Never Even Been Nominated so far as I can tell. And they've been doing their thing for 40 years. You don't have a Rock and Roll anything if you don't have Blue Öyster Cult.

No KISS. I don't like their politics either, but their stage presence alone should have earned them a place over any Rap or Disco act.

No Weird Al? Clearly someone is taking themselves far too seriously. Forchristsakes, people, you're in godsdamned Cleveland. You'd have to move to Peoria to be Less Rock and Roll.

No IRON MAIDEN? Seriously? I was kidding about BÖC (some) but to have a place that honors Legendary Rock and Roll acts that doesn't include Iron Maiden is to have a hall of Deserts with no Sand. It's the Man of the Year, Eunuch division.

No Stevie Ray Vaughn. No Warren Zevon? I mean, say what you like about Journey as music for women to sing poorly while drunk, but on a technical level, they surely belong in there before any Rap or Pop group. Devo? Peter Gabriel, Jethro Tull, Yes? I get it, Critics hate Prog Rock. fark Critics. They suck.

This isn't a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's a Music Critic Hall of Wanking.

1. you're acting like residents of Cleveland are the ones who vote, rather than some New York suits.
2. Cleveland IS very Rock N Roll.... I'd say the 3 top radio stations for the past 50 years are all Rock or Rock N Roll based.

The HoF's board is notoriously biased in favor of blacks. Whites (particularly of the Appalachian persuasion) are passed on for any black man who's ever picked up a guitar. Even if their motive is to draw visitors, they can't be credible by overemphasizing acts like Michael Jackson or Donna Summer who have contributed to rock-and-rock as much as my left nut. Year after year they lose favor amongst worthy musicians, and when they run out of half-dead jazzmen and pop stars, the people who remember the jackleg future inductees' will laugh.

Yeah, that's right, I said it.

I meant to be serious too... I am a huge Styx fan... and Rush, Pink Floyd... well classic rock really.

I've seen em I think 6 times, all without Dennis. Met Todd and Glenn and JY before. Got to see Dennis once and meet him, it was just great.

jeffreyh: The HoF's board is notoriously biased in favor of blacks.

I know! What have blacks ever contributed to music other than rhythm? Those racist bastards in the RRHOF. Blacks sure got it easy. I wish I was black, said no one ever.

Being one of Rick Rubin's early projects, Public Enemy was one of the first signings that fueled Def Jam Records. Without them, IMHO, Rick wouldn't' have had the capital to help create his other early signings, such as Slayer, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Danzig.

So, I definitely think that Public enemy should be in it.

Geddy to Rolling Stone "... I certainly have worked with Heart and I know them well. I'm very happy for them. I have great respect for Albert King and for Randy Newman. I don't know the music of Public Enemy very well, but I know they have a very strong fan base. They've certainly played a role in the development of that style of music for sure, so it's a nice group. To be frank, I am disappointed that Deep Purple is not included in that group. Geddy does have an odd voice, but at least it's distinctive. Lyrically, they have their moments. I know they are associated with Ayn Rand, and that is a capital offense on Fark, but they have some very thoughtful ones, too.

Distinctive is not always good, it's the only voice where I have to turn the radio station anytime they come on. Lulz, what?? Ayn Rand???? That can't be true because then NO ONE on Fark would like them.

Dude, that Freedom of Choice song or whatever, just listen to the lyrics. It's the worst song ever written. Neil Pert I'll give you, he's f*cking good but that's it. Prog rock is either tolerable or just awful. It's pornography for guitar nerds.

Geddy is considered by many to be a top 5 bassist (for whatever that's worth). Free Will is not that bad. A bit simplistic, but hey, it's rock and roll not a philosophy dissertation. I like Limelight and Subdivisions, and quite a few others lyrically. I think Neil writes most of the lyrics.

There's no making up for it when a person's voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard to you, though. There are lots of bands in the HoF deservedly which I cannot stand to listen to as well.

There are quite a few guitarists who will say Alex Lifeson is vastly underrated. Go back and listen to some of the guitar work in the albums from the late 70's and early 80's. There is some incredible work done musically during that time by the whole band.

Also, Rush is one of the top 3 bands I have ever seen in concert.

As for Lee's voice, I always thought it made them sound distinctive. Much better than 'generic lead singer number 1' most bands from that era had.

This honor is well deserved and WAY past the time it should have happened.

Lemme take a second to address Rush.

I like Rush. A Lot. I enjoy their musical virtuosity enough to overlook their frequently overly pedantic lyrics and their silly flirtations with the dessicated corpse of Ayn Rand. I like their overall body of work well enough that I will even forgive them Presto.

I have seen them in concert a couple of times, and they formed a goodly chunk of the soundtrack of my adolescence. 2112, Moving Pictures, and (gods forgive me) Power Windows are among my favorite albums.

If this "Honor" had anything to do with Rock and Roll, they would deserve it.

When they were coming to Nissan Pavillion on 9/9/12, my wife really wanted to go see them, and I went out on youtube to see how they were doing lately...

I like Rush enough to have tried to sing them in Karaoke on a number of occasions (Subdivisions and Red Barchetta). As the result of concert clips from 2008, I can say that I sounded just like Geddy Lee. I'm a baritone.

Sorry, man, you're a great bassist, but time is a bastard, and he's caught up with your vocal cords.

One of the things I liked about going to Cleveland to visit my uncle and his family back then was being able to listen to The Buzzard. My part of Virginia has always been a black hole as far as good radio is concerned(we still only have two rock stations; one is owned by Clear Channel and the other one has just started running Cumulus' 24/7 classic rock programming), so it was quite refreshing to hear a real rock station, even if it was just for a few days.

Whites are what make rock music, not rock-and-roll and not a handful of black musicians. Certainly not Public Enemy, Run DMC, Jackson 5, Prince, or Donna Summer. Check list of past inductees: at the current rate, Nelly and Rihanna will be inducted in 20 years.

From a very technical standpoint, there needs to be a separate Hall for "rock" music which doesn't overemphasize jazz and RnR; and doesn't include pop, hip-hop, or even heavy metal.

jeffreyh: at the current rate, Nelly and Rihanna

Your whole post failed with that comment, comparing Nelly and Rihanna with Public Enemy and Run DMC is asinine beyond belief and a faulty argument. Not to mention you failed by making this a racial argument in the first place. Good day sir.

Very ironic that you'd say that me being racial caused my post to auto-fail! Considering that both Run DMC and Public Enemy were racist rap groups, you proved my point exactly. Thank you. Just like the others who have quoted me, you haven't addressed half of what I stated. So I tempt you: do it.

Oh Jesus. What point do you even have? Stop letting black people into the hall? Only let in a specific kind of rock? No one addressed those points because it's your asinine opinion.
