This is bad news... for Goodell.

2012-12-11 01:36:21 PM
So... lots of people are guilty, so no one gets punished?

Am I reading that right?

Captain Steroid: This is bad news... for Goodell.

This is a massive CYA...for Goodell. He was totally accurate, but no suspensions so pretty please stop the lawsuit? Huh?

Good lawd, see y'all back in court.

What an asshole. He could have put a quiet end to all bounties, but noooo, he had to go and make a complete ass out of himself first and trash the Saint's season in the process.

2012-12-11 01:38:19 PM
Seriously, fark the Saints. Intentionally injure people, refuse to cooperate, bury the evidence and lie like motherfarker, get off scot free. The scum of the NFL. Even the Falcons play cleaner than you do.

2012-12-11 01:49:01 PM
This is such a cop-out too. How about punishing the whole team? Can't tell which player is most guilty? The whole team is complicit in their failure to work with the NFL. Easiest way to punish everyone: loss of all 2013 draft picks. Any traded picks return to the original team.

Old Paul Tagliabue is old. Sounds like he didn't want to get hurt.

Sounds like he's got a promising career in the NCAA, if he wants one.

Tags on Vilma - "I cannot, however, uphold a multi-game suspension where there is no evidence that a player's speech...prior to a game was actually a factor causing misconduct on the playing field and that such misconduct was severe enough in itself to warrant a player suspension or a very substantial fine."

Florio's headline at PFT puts it best - "Tagliabue walks tightrope to exonerate players, protect Goodell."

Not the NFL. You.

Not a word in the sentence you typed was true. Nobody intentionally injured anybody. Goodell railroaded the Saints to show how much the NFL cares about player safety as a shield against lawsuits.

And as for getting off 'scot free', in case you haven't heard we lost our head coach, and our first losing record since 2007 speaks for itself.

Awesome, I control the NFL now? I have access to all evidence on the case?

Your entire argument hinges on the idea that this entire thing is made up. A massive conspiracy against the Saints, and I'm the one who must provide detailed evidence of everything? This is an NFL equivalent of 'the President hasn't shown his birth certificate, therefore he's Kenyan.'

You're the one accusing the Saints of a massive conspiracy.

It's not really a conspiracy to say that the NFL saw that there were pay-for-play situations in every locker room and wanted to make an example of someone. These have existed in the NFL for at least decades.

You don't know that any more than he knows that someone did intentionally injure someone. You can say there's not sufficient evidence to prove that anyone was intentionally injured, but that's not the same thing.

GAT_00 is asserting there was intent to injure. Even Greg Williams' own affidavit - which the League used to SUPPORT its claims in Vilma's lawsuit - disputes that.

Gregg Williams, the Saint's Defensive coordinator has said that not only was there a bounty program, but he adminstered it. By so admitting, Gregg Williams has guaranteed he will never hold another coaching position in the NFL or College, or any other level of football EVER. Why would he admit to this if it wasn't true?

Untrue, if it were a pay-for-play, as every team in the NFL has had pay-for-play bounty programs in place for decades. Check out some articles from the '90s, you'll find mentions of it in newspapers as humorous sidebars. QBs buy linemen expensive things every year, the Seahawks DBs who made the Pro Bowl brought Richard Sherman (who wasn't selected but is possibly the best of the four)...there are lots of rewards by players to other players.

Greg Williams admitted to a system of paying out cash for big plays - not just hits, but interceptions, fumble recoveries, etc. - funded by the players, not the team. Player-to-player gifts have always been okay. Greg Williams vehemently denied that the scheme was to intentionally injure anyone, and that hits that were penalized not only paid no cash, but required the offending player to pay money into the kitty. He has maintained the program was for clean, legal hits.

Actually forcing Goodell supporters to read the contents of the statements and not just the 72-point "HE ADMITS IT!!!!11" headline is pretty difficult, man.

You really have problems connecting dots, don't you. He said Gregg Williams ensured he would never get another coaching job again by admitting to administering a bounty system. Every team in the NFL has had a bounty for pay-for-play for at least the last couple of decades - so no, that wouldn't prevent him from getting a job.

The other part is about the threats of penalty in general - player-to-player awards have been acceptable since...forever. Unless they were about illegal hits, then there's no reason to say the Saints were doing anything any other NFL team wasn't doing. And they've already just admitted that there's no proof of that.

Oh, you're DEFINITELY not supposed to bring up the ledger the NFL had to correct vis-a-vis players and teams a couple times, only lined up with payments for turnovers, and admitted had an inaccurate entry for Joe Vitt on the Vikings game. How, of course, having any admittedly inaccurate entry doesn't throw the whole document in the trash is strange, but.

/and I'd love to see the "Gregg Williams WILL NEVER BE REINSTATED!" people's faces when he does

Openly admitting it is what would keep him from having a job.

And if you actually read the link, it didn't say there was no proof. It said they couldn't absolutely prove which player did what, not that there weren't bounties made and paid out.

Bounties implies "pay for play," not "illegal hits." Just an FYI for those of you playing at home.

Well, you have to sympathize with his rage. Minor cash payouts for legal tackles are a horrific thing, and the Saints covering it up was just the worst thing ever. He'd hate to see an injustice where a team and its coaches were hit too hard for something minor, like kids getting raped in the locker room shower for 14 years, so you know this must be a really, really big deal.

I would agree with you if I didn't get the impression all other teams were like this in the NFL.

I also find it very hard to believe a player making a million dollars or more a year suddenly is doing shiat because someone offered $5,000. They don't do it for the money, they do it for the respect of their teammates.
