It's hard to say if they were near the impact site since, well, there isn't much left for latest Cretaceous deposits in that area (that whole impact/tsunami really did a number on them), though I did see tsunami deposits in northern Mexico when I was doing field work there about a decade ago. Lots of plants.

One could argue that the lizards were pretty widespread, and we have other Hell Creek Formation dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Torosaurus (it's not a Triceratops dammit) down as far south as New Mexico. Plus if it's high enough up, the fireball can be seen from quite a long ways away.

When digging on Triceratops this summer, we could see the ISS every night. It was visible from basically our position on the Montana border till it went into earth's shadow over Wisconsin.
