I would go see that, even though I, admittedly, have never made it all the way through the Silmarillion. Of course, I've also already got my ticket for the midnight showing of The Hobbit (I'm stopping at home after my exam only to grab a couple snacks and walk my dog after my final on Thursday then straight to the theater. I'm psyched for this movie) and would have bought it the first day they were available, but I didn't have my final exam schedule yet. So, perhaps I'm not the first person they will ask when they're trying to figure out if the general public would watch such a movie. I'd also like to see Children of Hurin as a movie.
