I love the game, don't get me wrong.

But there just doesn't seem to be all that much story behind the game.

Maybe we could get Michael Bay to direct!

There's enough set destruction in the game to justify such a decision, yes.

You have to admit..... there are thousands of games on mobile devices that are just about as fun as Angry Birds overall, but, they have really milked it for all its worth monetarily.... with a 7 year old, I can count the mobile game, the band aids, the board game and a National Geographic "Angry Birds" book in our house.

Probably most of the hate here will be people who are angry they didn't come up with something that has made 10% of what Angry Birds has brought in.

The cyberpunk flavor of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is going to Hollywood, with CBS Films confirming plans to produce a big screen adaptation of the 2011 game. Sinister director Scott Derrickson will take the helm, and he's also developing the script in collaboration with his Sinister cohort C. Robert Cargill.

For those who haven't seen it, Sinister is quite a solid little horror movie, with lots of creepy imagery and a very memorable antagonist. Deus Ex isn't exactly a horror story, but the gritty cyberpunk setting should mesh well with Derrickson's and Cargill's creative sensibilities.

Some networks play cartoons Saturday morning but they are usually just reruns of stuff that's usually on Nickelodeon or Disney. But your point is valid. I thought it would make a better Cartoon Network show than a film. Particularly in light of how long they are going to take to get this .made. Seriously they don't think Angry Birds will be horribly dated by then?

Why the heck does it require three years to make a movie based off a mobile phone game? Are they worried that they'll need more time for the story or for the visual effects?

The fad is already waning - I really think it peaked in 2011 and we're into the late majority by now - and while Angry Birds will always be an important landmark in bringing gaming to a mobile audience, Angry Birds: Star Wars is pretty much the end of the road for this series. They'll never top that.

Incidentally, Bad Piggies (also by Rovio) is a better game than Angry Birds in every way.

I'll bite. A recent full-length CGI movie, Starship Invasion, took 18 months to actually make after the script was done.

Even more comparable would be the production of the Viva Pinata series, which put close to 10 hours together for its first season with production time running less than a year.

Yes, big-budget, big-studio movies can move at a glacial pace, but quality CGI can be done in far less time. The problem here is that Angry Birds are topical, "now" - in 4 years? who knows what will be big. Imagine a Farmville movie project... there's a game that looks like it will be completely off the map in a year or two. I wouldn't risk a big budget on an Angry Birds movie that wouldn't be out for 4 years when the commodity might just be a fading memory.

There's your problem. They don't call it "Development Hell" for nothing. It takes flipping forever to get from idea to coherent, appealing story that can be made. It's hard for me as a student filmmaker to get my professor to approve a 10 minute short script for filming, I can only imagine up at the studio level with executives fighting to get their own views of the story in the script.

The Idea for Toy Story was thought up in 1988. They did not approve the film until 1993, at which voice casting began.

Just because it doesn't take long to shoot/animate a film doesn't mean they should just rush it. It takes writing and re-writing and more writing and more goddamned farking writing before you actually deal with making the film.

/Filmmaking is farking long and expensive.

You are ignoring my other example:

LesserEvil: Even more comparable would be the production of the Viva Pinata series, which put close to 10 hours together for its first season with production time running less than a year.

This example is probably more comparable, given the nature of the characters. It took less than a year to put together a 26 episode series and put it on the air. Even more like Angry Birds, Viva Pinata was based on a video game that was topical and hot for a very short time.

When production companies want to move, they can move. Understanding that your basis for the movie has a limited shelf life should be moving this project along far quicker than almost 4 years of production time.

2012-12-12 06:46:24 PM
You are still using the term production, which in the definition I have come to know it means the actual making of the media IE Animating/Shooting. In that sense, then yes, they CAN produce a 26 episode series in less than a year.
Development is the actual planning of the film and can take a very long time.

And I must say it is not a good thing to compare Television with Motion Pictures. They both have their own structure and ways to get things done. Traditionally TV has a more accelerated pace due to their weekly schedules, and even then, only after they have been on the air for a bit. Most first seasons are shot prior to air and a studio will request additional episodes once they renew a season.

And to be frank, the production values of Viva Pinata, though very good for Television, will not fly in the feature film category. Four years is actually a very good time to create an animated film, and if I know anything about the film business, IF Angry Birds falls out of popularity by 2016, the filmmakers will (hopefully) make damn sure it will still be an enjoyable film relevant to the audiences of the future.

/I watched You've Got Mail a few days ago, and the overall story is still enjoyable even if chain Bookstores and AOL are already out of style.

LesserEvil:
Even more comparable would be the production of the Viva Pinata series, which put close to 10 hours together for its first season with production time running less than a year.

A similar example that pops into mind is South Park, where an episode can go from nothing to ready to air in 3-4 days (a week is usually the norm). Of course, there is a special situation where most of assumingly most of the creativity are coming from 2 people, who also maintain (almost) the final say on editing.
