(Some WSJ Reposter)   Peggy Noonan has had a month to heal from one of the worst political predictions of 2012, still thinks America is a center-right country, admits her sky might be a little less pink than she had believed   (politicalnewsnow.com) divider line 17

-America is a center-right country
-Obama is a far-left Marxist Socialist

Given that Obama won re-election handily, have fun trying to keep these thoughts in your head simultaneously, right-wingers.

//the first is closer to being true, but since the second has been etched into their brains like the 10 Commandments, it seems they're starting to think America really is a country of socialist Marxist liberal minorities

America IS a center-right nation, relatively speaking.

The problem is that the Republicans are nowhere hear the center and keep screaming for the heads of any of their own who wander anywhere near it.

America is a center-right nation, and it re-elected the center-right candidate.

It's not surprising that Republicans try to paint Obama as socialist and leftist, they do that with every Democratic candidate. What's been amazing recently is how GOP leadership actually began believing their own rhetoric, at the expense of understanding actual reality.

This. The population hasn't really shifted. One party just decided to swerve hard in an extreme direction. In a two party system, that means that the other side gets bigger, despite attitudes not shifting appreciably.

Flab: America is a center-right nation [...] Except for the demographics

WAT?

I would submit that people are much more liberal than their government.

The right wingers yell the most to keep things the same, so the impression outsiders get is that we are a right-leaning nation.

Which we are in a superficial sense. Beneath that surface, people are tired of the same old conservative institutions being the dominant paradigm. and tend to want social services, safety nets, living wages, healthcare, etc...

Sorry if I ended up confusing you worse.

I loved the first two paragraphs. In summary: Everything I said was wrong--but I'm still right.

In a weird way, this is the end result of two decades of feel-good education. If it feels good and it feels right, it doesn't matter if it's true has finally taken root in today's Republicans. No! I want to believe Americans really do think the way I do! They really DID vote for my candidate, just not quite as much as I wanted them to! We really do run the country, just not quite as much as we really think we do! I FEEL it, so it has to be true!! Right? Please?

And feel-good Republicans like Noonan just can't seem to figure out why it's not working like she was promised it would.

Cognitive dissonance is a pre-requisite for advocating for both fiscal conservatism small government and social conservatism big brother.

How will you ever know what a paid shill like Peggy Noonan REALLY thinks?

Only in the world of the rightwing media can you be proven so spectacularly wrong, and so spectacularly two-faced, time and time again, and still continue to have a career.

The Republicans worked hard but were less clear-eyed in their survey of the field

Ah... even Peggy is calling the Republicans, and the Romney campaign in particular, farking morons.

czetie: She also repeats the popular canard that people "want" a Republican House and a Democratic Senate. You know, for balance. The population of the House at this point is overwhelmingly a product of gerrymandering, with relatively few competitive districts left.

Yeah, I was dismayed to learn that, despite the fact that more people voted for Democratic representatives, the House remained solidly Republican.
States should be divided logically into districts by non-partisan boards, not gerrymandered every ten years based on who's in power.

I actually wrote a (very) short email to her saying that she should do better and that she should be embarrassed by that piece she wrote the Monday before the election. I rarely do that sort of thing, but I felt compelled for some reason.
