i'm not going to read the article or even click to see if it's really a peggy noonan steamer, because i don't have to. i just feel like it's a poignant and insightful piece by ms. noonan that will stand as a new high watermark of journalism.

-America is a center-right country
-Obama is a far-left Marxist Socialist

Given that Obama won re-election handily, have fun trying to keep these thoughts in your head simultaneously, right-wingers.

//the first is closer to being true, but since the second has been etched into their brains like the 10 Commandments, it seems they're starting to think America really is a country of socialist Marxist liberal minorities

Peggy Noonan has had a month...

Well, TFA has had a month, anyway. I doubt it changed any while just sitting there.

America IS a center-right nation, relatively speaking.

The problem is that the Republicans are nowhere hear the center and keep screaming for the heads of any of their own who wander anywhere near it.

I actually wrote a (very) short email to her saying that she should do better and that she should be embarrassed by that piece she wrote the Monday before the election. I rarely do that sort of thing, but I felt compelled for some reason.

Noonan expressed her view that Palin did not demonstrate "the tools, the equipment, the knowledge or the philosophical grounding one hopes for, and expects, in a holder of high office," concluding that Palin's candidacy marked a "vulgarization in American Politics" that is "no good... for conservatism... [or] the country."

I hope she finds that kinder, gentler nation she's been looking for all these years. She probably won't find it in the GOP.

This. The population hasn't really shifted. One party just decided to swerve hard in an extreme direction. In a two party system, that means that the other side gets bigger, despite attitudes not shifting appreciably.

America is a center-right nation, and it re-elected the center-right candidate.

It's not surprising that Republicans try to paint Obama as socialist and leftist, they do that with every Democratic candidate. What's been amazing recently is how GOP leadership actually began believing their own rhetoric, at the expense of understanding actual reality.

She also repeats the popular canard that people "want" a Republican House and a Democratic Senate. You know, for balance. The population of the House at this point is overwhelmingly a product of gerrymandering, with relatively few competitive districts left.

Yeah, I was dismayed to learn that, despite the fact that more people voted for Democratic representatives, the House remained solidly Republican.
States should be divided logically into districts by non-partisan boards, not gerrymandered every ten years based on who's in power.

Revisionist historians have dreamed up this bullshiat about how the economy thrived during Clinton's administration because there was a Republican House. First, the Republicans claimed to anyone who would listen that Clinton's economy was totally the result of the dot-com bubble. When no one accepted that as truth they began to take credit for the economy with this lie about there being balance. They forget to mention that they spent most of the time trying to get Clinton impeached for a blowjob. NO ONE is going into a voting booth thinking, "I'll vote for Obama...and Bohner because this worked great in 1994.

Apart from the spectacularly incorrect prediction I made, everything I said was correct.

The nation or its values did not move, hasn't moved for 50 years. Thing is, investing in America is not socialism and the Republican party is no where near "Center right"

Peggy's columns are like four Inception levels deep of vague. She usually has about one point per extensive paragraph of verbose, meandering prose.

Her points:
1. Voters are naturally Republican and embrace Republican values like low taxes (as Peggy defines it, the "center-right" equilibrium) but the GOP campaigned stupidly and were wrong about where they should have been finding votes, ie you can't win an election in America just by winning old white people, anymore. "The base" has shrunk relative to the whole population.
2. Obama campaigned harder and better, and that is the only reason why Peggy was wrong in her election forecasting. Peggy was right on the values, but she was defeated by Obama's army of technical GOTV wizards and their enthusiasm gappery.
3. "People standing in the crowd react while watching election results displayed on a television." (???)

Many do. You'd be surprised at the number of liberals that work behind the scenes in right wing media. Most of these outlets are based in New York and LA, after all.
