Lsherm: As long as they are former students...

Its fiction. She, an English teacher, got punished for writing a work of fiction.

Let that sink in for a moment. If she had written a non-erotic work, do you think she would have been punished for with administrative leave and suspensions for using a computer to conduct "social networking of a personal nature?" The school is a public school--punishing her for publishing a work of fiction because they don't approve of the content. It seems there is a free speech issue here if she wants to tackle it.  And she's apparently hired an attorney. Good for her.

This is why a lot of smart people will never become teachers. 'Oh, so you also reserve the right to fire me for things I do under a pen name in my off hours? Hmm, let's see... Yeah, go fark yourself.'

Teaching as a concept appeals to me. Teaching in practice looks like volunteering to spend a good chunk of your life with a dysfunctional family.

I guess this guy is lucky that writing thing worked out for him, because he might have been fired from his job teaching English for writing about a young girl's dirty pillows:

Anyone find out how she was outed in the first place?

o'really: Whether we like it or not, teachers are considered role models, so the best policy is to keep their proclivities discreet. It's why most americans are ok with havin a gay male hairdresser, but not with havin a gay male teach their kids.

Well, we already know that a large percentage of Americans barely quality as idiots.

Great Janitor: JonnyG: So there's nothing wrong with every female teacher reading garbage like this as long as they didn't write it... Now that we have that straightened out.

Until some twit decides that they don't want their snowflake to be taught by someone with reading material like this, regardless of if they bring it to class or not, and then we end up holding teachers to a higher level of morality while asking "Why don't we have enough teachers?"

We've been told not to go to bars within the district we teach in (which comprises 5 "cities" - combined population of maybe 50-60,000). The theory being if we are spotted leaving a bar in an impaired state by one of our students it would reflect negatively on our character.

It isn't like she wrote it under her real name and was seeking attention. Pretty ridiculous that she's been put on leave.

you have pee hands: Lsherm: Well, like everything else, context is key. If you're writing a book about a heroic Ephebophiliac who sleeps with underage boys to get back at her ex-husband, it's not illegal, but it's certainly creepy. Especially if you're someone who works with kids. "It's fiction" is a cop out. Imagine you had a co-worker who only wrote fictional stories about breaking into your house and killing you. Perfectly legal, but still farking creepy.

The former students of a high school teacher likely aren't underage.

Yeah, that.

Would this even be a scandal in, say, Europe? Would it even be news?

China White Tea: BarkingUnicorn: Request granted. Once students can cite you as a reason why parents are wrong, you are no longer fit to teach. This rule is applied very consistently.

So if the parents are die-hard young-earthers, and I teach geology...

Then the whole public school system is unfit to teach; we need vouchers for charter schools and home-schooling. At the least, we need equal time for young-earth theory. Or we can make geology an elective.

The rule is applied consistently. What's done when it's violated varies from case to case. Typically, the path of least resistance is chosen.

Why would anyone check out the author before reading smut? Do you also limit your self to porn produced by guys you find attractive?

Inflatable Rhetoric: Lsherm: The book is about a school teacher (naturally) that gets even with her cheating husband by having affairs with two former students.

As long as they are former students...

It's fiction, so it does not matter.

What's next, getting fired for "impure thoughts?"

I mean, the Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that fake child porn is legal provided there are no real victims, but if my kid's teacher is like "wanna see my art?" and it's nothing but fake child porn, I'm raising my eyebrows. Whether or not it's a fireable offense is certainly debatable, but I'd still look at them sideways.

Fark_Guy_Rob: People need to decide if our educators are meant to be full-time role-models or free adults...

Everyone I talk to seems to have some arbitrary b.s. limit for what teachers are allowed to do in their free time. This lady just wrote a book, so that's okay. But if she were in a porno? Not okay. Unless it was a long time ago. Working as a stripper? Obviously that's not acceptable, right? Male teacher arrested for banging some tranny hooker outside in a park (outside of school hours) - well, OBVIOUSLY, in that case, we should consider what they do outside of class to impact their ability to teach. Right?

I don't much care either way, I'm just asking for some consistency.

This.

It seems to me that this should be a non-issue. Do teachers have to go before their higher ups or the school board to get every after hours hobby, money making endeavor or activity approved? If so, why stop there? Why not force teachers to eat only pre approved meals set forth by the school boards and fire them for not doing so? Why not have school officials randomly search the homes of teachers and check their computers for porn and questionable google searches.

In truth, the only jackasses who are behind this woman's suspension and pushing for her resignation are uptight parents who are holding up their ereaders with this book loaded and shouting "Think of the children!"

Because if they were beautiful people they'd be in pictures. Like the redheads on my left hand monitor going at it right now. I doubt they've read a book more than 200 pages.
