Why stop there? I'm sure they would be undefeated if they hadnt been unjustly accused of running the illegal bounty program they admitted running.

As for Cleveland, unless they get to play KC and Oakland three more times I wouldn't worry about playoffs.

I won't entirely write off the Bears just yet, but they've got one engine aflame, the flaps are stuck, and the captain is staring blankly at a smoking instrument panel.

The only good news if the season craters is that this year has shown that somehow, inexplicably, Chicago has developed a new young defensive core in Melton/Wright/Jennings. Maybe McClellan if he can learn to stop overshooting plays. Add Cutler/Marshall/Forte on the offensive side, and it's a pretty appealing roster for new coaching candidates.

After all their 7-9 idiot talk all offseason, I don't. That loss in the season finale moved us up several spots in EVERY round, allowed us to trade back and pick up two more picks (which got us some D-Line depth and a special teams beast in Jeremy Lane), and got us matchups at home vs Dallas and away vs Carolina rather than against Philly and New Orleans (didn't want to face NO in the SuperDome).

Best loss ever.

I'd rank it from average to above-average. It's very young though and has more than a few guys who can be really good down the line. One play maker at LB/DE/CB plus suitable upgrades at the other two and our defense could really be something.

Holy crap, Broncos at #2. They are playing well, but haven't beaten anybody good in a long while. Not that the Ravens are great, but looking forward to this weekend's game. Hoping for the Broncos to win out and the 9ers to find a way to take out the Pats this weekend. I think the Broncos can win the AFC, but not if they have to travel to Foxboro in January. The #2 seed wins the AFC this year.

I'm a Bears fan and I've written off any hopes for this season. The Packers are more than likely going to shell us, the Seahawks are going to take our wild card spot, and our 7-1 start is now a distant memory.

Browns defense is above average - they started 0-5 with Joe Haden suspended and an injured Phil Taylor - both those players are back now. Defense is strong up front (with like 8 playable guys in a rotation), and secondary is above average. Linebackers are average except for D'Quell Jackson, who is very good.

Browns have been blown out of one game - the SB Champ Giants, but have been in every other game. Get these young offensive players some experience and Browns fans will have something to look forward to next year (unless new ownership blows it all up and starts over this offseason, then we're back to Same Old Browns).

Even though the Packers should be 10-3, a 5 or 6 spot seems about right. I think we could beat the Pats or the Broncs, already crushed the Texans, and didn't lose too terribly to the 49ers.

I fully expect the same, but when you're hosting a divisional game, anything can happen. Although, since it is the Bears, if they do win against the Pack, they'll probably lose in DET in Week 17 and miss the playoffs anyway.

2012-12-11 11:40:12 AM

FreakinB: If a couple of very makeable plays had gone the Browns' way they would have at least been 7-6 and right in the mix. But they didn't, so nice try Mayans.

They're more in the mix than the Dolphins and Chargers, actually.

The Browns own tiebreakers on almost every AFC team in playoff contention. The overwhelmingly likely scenario that knocks the Browns out of the playoffs is if they lose another game. If that by some miracle (against the Skins, Broncos, and Steelers) doesn't happen, they're eliminated if any of the teams in front of them that can get to 9 wins (Steelers, Bengals and Jets) get to 9 wins. This means if both the Steelers and the Bengals win this week, you can pretty much kiss the Browns' playoff chances goodbye. However, should there be a clusterfark at 8-8, here are the tiebreakers:

Browns would have TB on Bengals due to better division record. The Browns would be 3-3, Bengals would be at best 2-4 since they're 1-3 in division, and they'd have to go 1-2 to make 8-8, which necessitates a loss against either the Steelers or the Ravens.

Browns would have TB on Steelers due to having swept them (as a week 17 win against the Steelers is necessary for the Browns to go 8-8.)

Browns would have TB on the Jets due to better conference record. The Browns would be 7-5 (5-5 currently), and the Jets, whose remaining games are in conference, would have to go 2-1 to get to 8-8, making their current 4-5 conference record 6-6.

Browns would have TB on the Dolphins due to better conference record (Dolphins would be 6-6 if they won out).

Browns would have TB on the Chargers due to having beaten them in week 8.

The only team that can get to 8-8 that the Browns would not have a tiebreaker on is the Buffalo Bills, who beat the Browns in week 3.

But, this is all moot, since if they don't lose to the Redskins, they'll likely get smashed by Peyton and the Broncos. However, if by some miracle the Browns pull those 2 victories off, and conditions fell right (Jets lose to Chargers, Bengals lose to Eagles, Steelers lose to Cowboys then beat Bengals, Bills lose to Seahawks), there is then a chance that the Sunday Night Football game for week 17 would be Browns vs. Steelers. And I know some of you would be praying for the Bob Costas rant at halftime.

The way that they've been able to play with so many starters injured (Rak, Carriker, Davis, etc) leads me to believe that the morale in that locker room is off the charts this year.

Ah, good point. I've still got it stuck in my head that the Texans have a two game lead, but they very well could lose a game or two and end up the 2 or 3 seed. As a Bronco fan, I just want home field against the Pats, if possible.

Fark Griswald: Is Cleveland's defense really that good? No snark, I just haven't watched them all season.

Yes, they really are that good, especially when Haden is playing in the secondary. The front line is young, fast and strong, the LB's have experience and speed, and the secondary has a good mix of youth and experience in it. It took a while for them to jell but the defense has kept them in games even when the offense wasn't doing anything.

Now the offense appears to be finding itself (finally) and they're starting to not play down to the level of their opponent. I don't think the Browns will make the playoffs this year, but next year they should be well positioned to challenge for their division's crown if everyone stays healthy and we don't see another team blowup.

Honestly, at this point, one just has to assume you haven't really read much on the story if that's how much you want to simplify it. Yes, the players put together a kitty for all kinds of big plays, but even Greg Williams' affidavit the League has been waiving around says it was for clean, legal hits and any penalized hits not only didn't get a payout, but actually resulted in the player having to put money into the kitty. So, yes, they admitted they had a pay-for-performance bonus system for the defense, but they deny that there was ever any intent to injure people or pay for "dirty" hits. Is this so hard to understand?
