meanmutton: Okay, I'm thinking -- what could possibly be similar in our culture?

See that's the thing.

There isn't. Amusing to watch all the racism bubbling up to the surface in this thread, though. For awhile, anyway. Then I'll do something else.

The action goes against the custom of some Muslim countries, which considers shoes unclean because they are 'closer to the ground, closer to the devil and farther away from God'.

You ever stop to think that shoes are the only thing that's keeping your souls from being a quarter inch closer to the devil and the ground?

meanmutton: Okay, I'm thinking -- what could possibly be similar in our culture? Accidentally using the N-word to refer to President Obama? Using the middle finger to point to the ceiling or something? Talking with food in his mouth? Slapping Secretary Clinton on the ass?

Most of those things wouldn't be considered innocent in other cultures, though. Maybe the accidental middle finger, but those other examples would be offensive in basically all societies.

The middle finger pointing at the ceiling is just right.

Yes, they're not people, they're "children" to you. How enlightened of you. This is why nationbuilding fails, BTW.

Yes, we should fall all over ourselves to accommodate every last superstition they hold, and accept whatever retaliation they deem just if / when we screw up. Feeding their superstition = enlightened, if one goes by your book. Just like the actual Enlightenment, which cherished and maintained all of those precious Middle Age customs, right?

Pardon me for expecting a nuclear weapon-seeking world leader to behave like a reasonable adult.

whidbey: Seriously, that's got to be the weirdest farking "insult" I've ever heard of.

Of course, I live in a first-world country, and like many of my fellow countrymen, ignorant of other cultures.

Nope, they mentioned it Blackhawk Down. People on the ground were mad at the soldiers feet dangling out as they flew over...Among other things, of course.

How are you Whidbey? Years and years ago you would always enter a thread with a lovely picture of the Pacific NW.

Worked just fine in Japan and Germany.

It wasn't "nationbuilildng." It was reconstruction of two conquered countries we went to war with.

"Nationbuilding" refers to farking around in a country that didn't attack us, and attempting to tinker with it until we can contain it.

Not even the same thing, though superficially similar.

Lots of places talk with food in their mouths and treat women as sex objects. Also, it's not a stretch to assume someone gets the French word for black confused with the English racial slur considering that they're so close.

If you're insulted because you've seen the bottom of somebody's shoe, yes, you are an arrogant, petty child, and THAT mindset is "why nation-building fails." NOT because you choose to be insulted by a gesture with no more meaning than running your fingers through your hair, but because you look for any petty reason at all to literally explode with stupidity and hatred. Religion is the most lame excuse for bigotry there could ever be. It's like arguing to the point of crossing swords over who is the sexiest Disney Princess: Belle, Jasmine, or Ariel.

Yes. I can find examples.

No, I will not post them here to placate your desire to argue for argument's sake. We all know that no matter what I post, the argument will change and you already know the data you've requested.

Regardless, they keep their superstitions and religion to themselves and I'm fine with them. We visit their house and they have weird rituals, then I'm fine with them. However, they come to my house and expect me to placate their weird rituals, then no, I will not worry about that.

But it's up to the visitor of the house to follow the house rules to maintain peace.

Yeah except for the fact that we didn't actually declare or go to war with Iran or Afghanistan. What's more, we set the stage for both fiascos by installing dictators or standing by while other countries installed puppet regimes.

Your comparison is dishonest, and you still making the mistake of thinking "reconstruction" is the same thing. We suck at nationbuilding because we are wrong to do it.
