All these rootin tootin statisticals make my brain hurt. I'll make it simple - Norwegia is full of gay homos that gave Marxbongo the Nobel Prize for being black. China is where we get Kung Fu and Panda Express. Advantage China. End of story

Compared to China, Norway is being tipsy after an extra shot in your eggnog. At grandma's.

Just more passive-aggressive saber rattling, as always.

China is pissed that someone criticised them by awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to a dissident?

I am shocked, shocked I say!

I hate to say this, but when it comes to tourists, if someone is being "of low quality" and "poorly-behaved," they're generally Americans. Granted, my experience is limited and anecdotal, but from what I've seen, if there's a loud, obnoxious jerk acting like he owns the place, he's an American. That, or a drunk Italian.

Honestly, our loudmouthed boors don't even have passports. Many rarely are out of their native state. Outside of our military ranks, Americans who have the freedom, notion, and wherewithal to travel aren't typically distinguishable from Canadians. Politically or manners-wise. Perfect, no, but trying.

Brits, though. 20-year-old foul-mouthed drunk yobs can be found basically anywhere between Reykjavik and Jerusalem.

I have it on good authority from farkers that Katy Perry doesn't wear her makeup to bed and Olivia Munn doesn't like Call of Duty as much as I do, thus, they are well below my standards.

Actually, the consensus on the internets is that the English are by far the worst, followed by the Italians. The Germans are supposed to be really obnoxious at Med Sea resorts (the infamous towel on the deck chair).

Americans may talk too loud, but they tip and generally don't assault local women and get in fights with local men like the Brits do.

heh, Norway doesn't give a shiat about China's tourism dollars, they export like 2 million barrels of oil a day, they have a budget surplus and like a 3% unemployment rate.

My ex wife married a Norwegian and moved there. I'm not much of a fan of the cold, but it sounds like a nice place, to hear her tell it. Her husband delivers ice cream. In Norway. And yet they can still afford to live a nice middle class life. It just sounds so alien, the thought that breaking your leg probably wouldn't mean financial ruin ultimately leading to homelessness and suicide if you were a lower income worker.

Oh well. It's not so bad in America, but it could be better.

if America is such a great place to live (you know, greatest country on earth and all that) why do so many Americans escape with drugs?

that's all drug use is, a temporary escape from your current condition/state of mind.

we have the largest drug market in the world. and this includes prescription drug abuse too.

methinks that there won't be too many answers to this question. at least not honest answers.

Is Norway a low quality, badly behaved country?

Not in the least. I found it to be a very nice, friendly county; even to an American that only spoke Southern.

Word of warning though - if you are at a club in Trondheim at 2:00 AM on a Saturday night and you are about to go home with a girl, be sure to card her. Me and some buddies met a few very attractive young ladies at a club and assumed that if they got in then they had to be drinking age, or at least close enough to acquire and pass off a fake ID. It wasn't until we met them again the next morning at a local mall and we actually were able to speak with them that they informed us they were 15.

/Thankfully no one had relations with them and needed to take a seat.

//Watch out for gas prices too; converted from kroners per liter into dollars per gallon it came out to be $11.50.

You answered your own question. A big reason why Americans escape with drugs (aside from genetic predispositions and PTSD type things) is because of exceptionalism. Everyone is supposed to become something special and go to college and make a ton of money for doing nothing, which is not how reality works, which leads to depression and drug use/abuse. Our country ISN'T the greatest in the world, and we personally are not great either. The sooner people realize that we all don't have the same opportunity, the sooner more people would become genuinely successful by lowering their own standards.

Not so sure I'd agree with "greatest country on earth" or "that's all drug use is..."

America is a great place to live, but I think we likely agree the "greatest country on earth" stuff might just be feel good BS. That would be subjective depending on how you like to live and such forth so on....

...and the reasons people use drugs are pretty hard to nail down sometimes...depending on what drug you're talking about, it's not always a form of escape IMO.

are you considering alcohol a drug? that might tip the scales a bit as I suspect Europeans would give Americans a pretty good run for drunkest drinker...and again, I wouldn't assume it's always about escape.

I think drugs are very easy to find in America. So availability is a factor too. Not sure if doctors are falling over themselves to pass out the latest anti-depressant or forget your problems meds in other countries. Not sure you can get street drugs so easily in europe either.

America is a great place to live if you are not a lazy asshole who insist on having kids they cannot afford. The problem is that America has a lot of lazy assholes who insist on having kids they cannot afford and the rest of the world blames Americans who are sick and tired of those lazy assholes for the lazy assholes bad behavior which includes taking drugs. It would be nice for a change if the rest of the world told those lazy assholes to stop being lazy assholes.

People in Spain hate English tourists (esp in Ibiza), in Greece they loathe the plague of Italians that descend in the summer (especially on the islands), and just about everyone hates Germans. Americans are well known for sucking, but they don't have the market cornered by a long shot.

interesting. i think the TV teaches us how life is 'supposed' to be, not how it actually is. buy this thingy and you'll be happy and content. all we see are people's highlight reels and compare our every day lives with their highlight reels. this tends to discourage people and they turn to dope for relief.

its all marketing. TV/mass media shows us how we're 'supposed' to live in order to be happy/content. of course, its all a lie and its sole purpose is to sell something.

One of our biggest social problem, IMHO, is that in the U.S. we have a cultural equation that having kids makes one a good person. For some it goes farther and the internal belief is that the more kids one has the better person one is.

farm1.staticflickr.com

It's bullshiat and because of all the religious underpinnings involved it's a minefield and people don't want to discuss it. There is no reason to have more than 2 kids even in the US. None at all. I doubt the direction we are going though that the Enderverse's social taboo against "thirds" won't happen in our lifetimes...

National Brotherhood Week

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks.
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek.
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise,
As long as you don't let 'em in your school.

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It's American as apple pie.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'cause it's very chic.
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand.
You can tolerate him if you try.

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
It's National Everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood Week.
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you.
It's only for a week, so have no fear.
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!
