(The New York Times)   Mars rover Opportunity lives past its use-by date, like your cranky great-grandmother who hates your mashed potatoes and hates having to come over every Christmas to your dirty house and brat kids   (nytimes.com) divider line 5

Grotesk: SewerSquirrels: old_toole: SewerSquirrels: The Bestest: Nurglitch: Spirit is up and roving, but Opportunity hasn't come back on-line yet.

uh.. Spirit has been declared "dead" (offline with no prospect of reactivation) since 2010, and this very article is about a new site Opportunity is exploring

That whishing sound was something going over your head.

I heard something whish also... I don't get it.

I could be wrong here, but I don't think Nurglitch was referring to anything concerning Mars.
That may just be my interpretation considering that Opportunity hasn't put so much as blip on my radar in years.

The original rover missions are the very story of my life: Half dead, stuck in a desert, Spirit gave out years ago, Opportunity is out there, but is always somewhere else far away, and it's all gone on much, much longer than anyone expected.

Also, I have the brainpower of a potato bug, sleep for months at a time, and my idea of cleanliness is to let nature knock some of the dirt off of me if it wants to.

I have just met you, and I love you.

The Bestest: phalamir: Yeah, but that's the Goofus twin; we're talking about the Gallant twin

That's actually kinda unfair. They may have been built with identical specs, but they had significantly different mission profiles.
Opportunity was sent to the equivalent of a Sandals resort while Spirit was sent to Mars' Camden.

I'm now picturing a Mars rover on blocks with its wheels missing.
