Definately my favorite if I base it off of repeated listens:

Didn't see the whole list. Did Helplessness Blues make it anywhere?

This is why I hate low profile critics...from the "Swans" album review (#5):

The album's lengthy emotional trawls through darkness and luminescence were undeniably forward-thinking, gracefully arranged, and aggressively delivered, with Gira and co constructing edifices of vibrancy, sound and color-their foundations set deep in fertile, doom-laden soil. The Seer pummeled, stroked and nurtured, dripping with ecstatic catharsis like no other album from 2012, its thick hallucinogenic and physical tension released in palpable purgative doses throughout the album's two-hour journey. Reveling in trepidatious rapture, The Seer celebrated life, death, chaos and fear as potently as in the Swans' very best work. Through it all, the "lunacy, lunacy, lunacy..." was overwhelming resonant. - Craig Hayes

...what a ridiculous asshole.

SilentStrider: Hunh. Clockwork Angels actually made the list. Surprises me, pleasantly.

I have seen the 50 best albums lists from Pitchfork, Paste, Rolling Stone, NPR, American Singers and Songwriters, and now PopMatters. Rush isn't in the top 50 in any of those lists. People still aren't getting it.

That album just isn't very good.

Where do you people hear this music?

There's this thing called the internet. You can, if you're so inclined, use it to seek out music other forms of creative expression that you may not otherwise be familiar with. Some of those things you will not like, some of them you will.

/I'd highly recommend it.

Rush to the Rock and Roll HOF. I, for one, welcome the end of the whining.

this is neat. Metacritic has the top ten albums from 43 different best albums lists, and then ranks albums by the most appearances in those lists and whether they were ranked first, second or third.

Bummer. I was hoping you all had found a hipster wacky morning zoo and I really, really wanted to listen to that.

Gaslight Anthem
Godspeed You Black Emperor
Japandroids
Amanda Palmer

Those were the only few I noticed that I thought were good. The list obviously overlooked a ton of genres and other work that was done in 2012, but this was obvioulsy targetting a demographic that would know more than a handful of these albums. I knew more than a handful, I just didn't like them. And, how does Taylor Swift fit on this list?

Have you tried Morning Becomes Eclectic?

I am notorious among my friends for having no musical knowledge, but my buys this year include Avett Brothers, Eric Hutchinson, Muse, Scissor Sisters, the new Green Day albums, Gary Clark, and thanks to these threads I'm getting into Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

I loved the Scissor Sisters and Eric Hutchinson. Haters gonna hate; meanwhile I have new 'in the kitchen' albums. I enjoyed the Muse quite a bit, but if the whole album was nothing but Panic Station I'd still be happy with my purchase. (Of course, I only paid $2.99 for it, but still...)

/I wonder if Muse released an instrumental album would some hipsters think it was GY!BE.

That time of year again. Came for the hipster-bashing, left with some albums I either didn't hear about or forgot to pick up yet...
List wasn't that bad but like anything on Popmatters, horribly pretentious. Fair bit of overlap with The Guardian's list, which is a much better read.

Dutch Pilsner: Tame Impala in the top 10? I'll give this list a meh +1.

Your comment is wrong and you are wrong. Lonerism should be on everyone's Top 10.

A note to hipster-bashers:

Physician, heal thyself. If anyone is being an elitist, it's you.
Other people may like music you've never heard of before. There is quite a lot of music out there, you know. They're not doing it to annoy you. They're not trying to be elitist. Not everyone enjoys the same genres of music that you do. It's OK.

Stopped by hoping someone would mention this one, leaving happy.

If your best of 2012 list excludes this, you have no business writing lists to begin with.

But what if I have the superior Les Discrets album instead?

Les Discrets newest album was one of my biggest disappointments. Not bad, but it peters out quickly after a great opening.

The +1 was because Tame Impala was in the top 10. Phrased my comment way inappropriately. Would like to see more Cat Power and Flying Lotus love though...

The Menzingers - "On The Impossible Past" was probably my favorite of the year. I have no idea who 90% of those bands are

I'm probably gonna get a Fark smackdown for this but one of my favs this year is Hot Cakes by The Darkness. Not as good as their 1st and certainly much better than their 2nd, but it's pretty good.
