Turbo Cojones: Creoena: I've heard of only 5 artists/bands in this entire list. Either I'm out of touch with modern music, or this list is full of hipster crap

Over-sampled, over-layered until humans sound like machines, hipster crap.

What have you been listening to?

2012-12-11 09:14:14 AM
Nice to see Bob Mould on the list. Amazing album.

Fallout Boy: Not a fan of Soundgarden but I am surprised that King Animal didn't make the list.

I'm surprised it's not on there either.

verbaltoxin: mr.doctor: verbaltoxin: I got Yellow Green by Baroness. I think it was pretty good.

/Also picked up the new Torche and Sword. The former I've barely listened to, and should give another whirl. The latter is okay.

Damn totally forgot about The Sword - Apocryphon. I would also have to put that as one of my favorite albums that have come out this year.

For me, Apocryphon isn't much of a progression from Warp Riders. That's why I've had trouble getting into it. Additionally I think their vocalist is incredibly limited and a strong voice would help break up their endless riffing a bit, and give the songs some dynamics.

/Forgot to mention I also picked up Jonathan Coulton's Artificial Heart this year; I'm not usually a fan of singer-songwriter stuff but his record is pretty good.

While Warp Riders is their best album in my opinion. I think Apocryphon did a good job of refining or extending their style which they have mastered in Warp Riders. Also I will also note 2012 for me has been a bit of downturn from mainstream metal compared to 2011. I have had more enojoyment finding older albums from the last couple of years and a lot of the local indie stuff where I am from. Also I kinda enjoy the endless rifting they do, really gets a good trip going. It also helped make my joke when Warp Riders came out "There has been a definitive lack in guitar rifts all year, since The Sword stole all of them for themselves."

seriously, alabama shakes and soundgarden are NOT on this list?

this list, like many other "best of" lists, is officially meaningless!

a.s. is one of the best new bands in the last 5 years, and sg's new album, while it's no "ultramega ok" or "badmotorfinger", it's every bit as good as a cross between "bmf" and "superunknown" might be. even when not at their peak, soundgarden is a great band!

i did see jack white and the avett brothers in 2 of the higher spots, so that's good.

/did NOT bother with the entire list...6 of the top ten i'd never heard of...and frank ocean is good for neo-soul, but that's really not saying much

I haven't heard it, but it seems like the only people really excited for it are people whose music taste never left the 90s. Not that I dislike Soundgarden at all, but the whole reunion struck me more as a way of Chris Cornell saying "sorry I farked up" for his last album than a genuine reunion.

TheLopper: kingflower: I have listened to that Frank Ocean album three times and I am having a hard time understanding how this album is on every best album of 2012 list.

I listened to him for the first time this week, and I'm still cleaning all the blood off the walls that shot out of my ears.

so, you liked it?

2012-12-11 09:54:01 AM
Still can't get into that Fiona Apple album. I keep seeing people claim it's brilliant and one of the year's best, but I couldn't even make it through the first track. She sounds like she's drunk and crying.

I'm still going through a bunch of metal albums so I don't quite have an album of the year yet on that side of things, but non-metal would go like this:

Night Flight Orchestra - Internal Affairs
The Soft Moon - Zeros
Dinosaur JR - I Bet on Sky
Soundgarden - King Animal
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball
Marillion - Sounds That Can't Be Made
Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited II
Melvins - Freak Puke
Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania
Donald Fagen - Sunken Condos

Amen to the Torche love. Great sludgy pop-rock.

I'd also include:

Deftones - Koi No Yokan
Half Moon Run - Dark Eyes
O'Brother - Garden Window
ASIWYFA - Gangs

A really nice year for post-rock/instrumental rock as well. Caspian, Russian Circles, Syberia, Toundra, Maserati all put out great albums.

Top 5 for me this year:

1. Panopticon - Kentucky
2. Woods of Ypres - Grey Skies and Electric Lights
3. Wintersun - Time
4. Rush - Clockwork Angels
5. Appalachian Winter - Ghosts of the Mountains

/honorable mention is anything I've released

ModernPrimitive01: 3. Wintersun - Time

Jari's Magical Computer Orchestra the album.

Asa Phelps: I refuse to believe that the Mountain Goats have released anything decent since Tallahassee.

Also, i don't even know what the fark people listen to anymore.

What? Everything except for Heretic Pride is just stellar. The Sunset Tree is one of the best albums ever made.

/I'm not that fond of most of the stuff pre The Coroners Gambit

I was going to complain that there was absolutely no electronic music in this list, and then I realized they had a separate electronic music list of 10 albums. However, I didn't agree with many of their choices, and I certainly don't think "Luxury Problems" is album of the year.

So here's my list again from the last thread.

Alex Under "La Maquina De Bolas"

dickfreckle: AdolfOliverPanties: Record reviews are the farking worst:

The songs of Preachers sound to bubble up as a miasma from a swamp. Southern Gothic to a T, with all the pathos, depravity, dread and redemption that implies, the record is a dispatch from the squalor of emotional wreckage. Holding court in this landscape is the id of singer Jeff Klein, howling of being, but an animal in a well on the title track...

What a pretentious load of pseudo-artsy-quasi-intellectual bullshiat. Makes me want to NOT even bother to listen to the music.

Yeah, music writers are among the most useless people in the world. Very few of them are able to write without sounding like colossal douchezillas.

My hobby is trying to figure out what an album sounds like based on the PopMatters review. Very challenging, especially for artists you aren't familiar with.

"What does it sound like?"

"It's an emotional rollercoaster, displaying the philosophical maturity of the artist in a sophisticated but accessible showcase-"

"Yeah, so, what does it sound like?"

And, since everybody seems to be doing it, here are a few of my faves:

How the hell is Purity Ring's album only 71??? It should be top ten easy.

Santigold should be higher too.

Sleigh Bells should not be here, their second album sucked.

Springsteen should be higher too...it is excellent.

OK, I just read the review of the Swans' album.

"The album's lengthy emotional trawls through darkness and luminescence were undeniably forward-thinking, gracefully arranged, and aggressively delivered, with Gira and co constructing edifices of vibrancy, sound and color-their foundations set deep in fertile, doom-laden soil. The Seer pummeled, stroked and nurtured, dripping with ecstatic catharsis like no other album from 2012, its thick hallucinogenic and physical tension released in palpable purgative doses throughout the album's two-hour journey."

The fark you say.

What does it farking sound like, mutherfarker?
