South Park: The Stick of Truth is the first South Park game which Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been actively involving in making. They wrote the script and performed the dialogue, and they are rumored to have provided Obsidian with 15 years of assets from the show to get the details right.

This might actually be good.

They showed gameplay. It's turn based and your guys stand in formation. When Cartman farts fire, when Mr. Slave runs out and jumps pantsless, and when Sparky is humping that kid, those are all attacks or summons. Pretty sure Mr Hankey was one, too. This is gonna be a lot of fun.

Obsidian knows how to make great storyline games and interesting RPG specs -- Fallout New Vegas, KOTOR 2, hell, even Dungeon Siege 3 had a interesting yarn for a bit. And most of those folks worked on Fallout 1 and 2. They also made Neverwinter Nights 2 and Alpha Protocol, the latter I remember getting roasted for being bad and buggy.

That said, they also make the buggiest-bug fark games this side of Bethesda. New Vegas was ungodly with the bugs and crashes. And I'm still pissed at the unfinished stuff in KOTOR 2.

As tempting as it is to preorder on Steam, I'm going to wait for the reviews and patches.

It's EA's fault KOTOR2 didn't have an ending. They wanted it released before Christmas and it just wasn't finished. The pc version has dialogue for the hk47 quest line still in the install files but the quest was not finished in time (along with what ever ending they wanted to put in)

The game appears to be modeled after the Paper Mario series.

Though come to think of it, a game featuring 4 kids traveling around an absurdist satire of small town america actually sounds like another certain Nintendo RPG series...

EA is guilty of farking over many a game developer but in this case, it was LucasArts that pushed Obsidian to release KOTOR2 early. Now Dragon Age 2 is one where I'll put the blame on EA.

Unfortunately I know better. It'd be amusing for a while until each skill is used about 50 times, and that's assuming it was designed well.

Games intended to hit the funny bone have to be deliberately short (Worms, Stacking) or have some other appeal (Pocket Fighter, Team Fortress 2) to have replay value. Games like Rampage and Dungeon Keeper eventually got boring from repetition. This is an RPG -- the longest and most repetitive game format in existence.

It's safer to design a game first and include funny parts than design a funny game and hope it's good. This is South Park, which has already flopped several times as a video game.

It's not the design; it's the idea. This is something I'd love to see succeed, but in reality it's a bad idea.

For some reason I thought they won an Oscar for the South Park movie, so I had to wiki it. You are right, of course, but I had to laugh my ass off at this too.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Blame Canada". When the time came to perform the track live at the ceremony, as is custom for the Academy Awards, it ran into trouble with ABC's standards and practices department: censors demanded they write TV-friendly lyrics.[56] "It would be ironic to have to change the words in a movie about censorship," remarked Shaiman.[56] Censors were particularly unhappy with the use of the word fark and allusions to the Ku Klux Klan. When Parker and Shaiman declined these requests, Robin Williams, a friend of Shaiman's, sang the song with black tape over his mouth and turning his back when curse words were to be sang.[57] Parker and Stone attended the ceremony in drag, wearing replicas of dresses previously worn at the Oscars by Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez.[58] The two claimed years later that they took acid before the ceremony and were high while wearing the outfits

Matt and Trey are the best.

Yeah I had the same thought, but then figured the genre is specifically a "role playing game" as opposed to a "play the role game" so it might be slightly more precise ...either way it is a silly thing to think about and I feel bad for posting...

What MCBSLCF said. I wasn′t fixing the grammar but rather the style of rryant123′s witty retort to justtray. It′s ‶Role-Playing Game," not ‶Role-Play Game," so for the clever reverse-the-word-order retort to have the maximum impact, the middle word should be ‶playing."

That's pretty much the idea. TP and MS said, at least in their spread in Game Informer a few months back, that all they really wanted was for it to feel like the player was playing through an episode of South Park. So far, the only video game that's ever pulled off the "Feels like playing a movie/episode" has been the Arkham games. Both of them felt like an interactive episode of BTAS. Looks like Parker and Stone pulled it off.

Is everyone so worked up because the graphics perfectly mirror the TV show or what? It looks entertaining, but I've seen so many people claiming GOTY for this thing and I just don't see a single reason why. It seems more like an XBLA release than a full blown title. Maybe my attachment to Paper Mario isn't what it is for everyone else. I enjoyed it, it's a great game. But a south park style paper mario and suddenly everyone is like THIS IS THE BEST THING OF 2013!!

Especially when it's coming from a dev well known for massively buggy and incomplete games with passable stories. Regardless of whether you blame the dev or the publisher for that. Even their own original creation(Alpha Protocol) was known to be an absolute mess that had great ideas that were poorly implemented.

It's not that. I think it's got a reasonable chance of being pretty good. I'm just confused as to why so many people(gaming websites included) are calling this thing the most anticipated title of 2013, early GOTY contender, etc, etc. No gameplay has been shown, and the dev in charge has a reputation for middling quality. It's very perplexing to me.

And I'm not saying anyone is wrong for thinking it'll be awesome or anything. I'm genuinely curious, because it makes no sense to me.

Dead Space 3(though I'm not happy about the coop focus)

Xcom(FPS reboot, not the turn based one that already came out)

all of these are currently set for a 2013 release. How can you say there's nothing to look forward to beyond a South Park RPG? This doesn't even include the obvious title updates of Battlefield 4, whatever CoD comes out next year, and probably a new Assassins Creed game.

If we're lucky they'll tie it into the current season of the show. I know it's a prequel to everything, but they could use this as an opportunity to setup Daryl's motivations to either help merle in the current season, or be completely against him. "Unveiled" isn't the right word. I saw this trailer on the net months ago.

Strategeryz0r: mooseyfate: Strategeryz0r: And lets not forget that every Walking Dead fan jokes about a spin off show revolving around Merle and Daryl having awesome redneck-y violent adventures in the zombie infested world.

Guess what?

They're making a game based on exactly that

How they're going to make a game featuring Merle Dixon where you don't/can't kill his farking face off is beyond me. Not saying it's going to suck, I'm just unsure how they'll pull that off.

If we're lucky they'll tie it into the current season of the show. I know it's a prequel to everything, but they could use this as an opportunity to setup Daryl's motivations to either help merle in the current season, or be completely against him. Some interesting story options they could utilize with this.

Well, it's already been made pretty clear that Daryl doesn't sweat about his brother much. He got mighty pissed when he found out they left him on the roof in Atlanta, but that seemed to be more of a "principle of the matter" kind of thing. When they were tracking Merle's path through the buildings, his general attitude seemed to be "Merle can take care of himself, he's a big boy.". So I reckon there's not much between these brothers EXCEPT blood. Maye they'll delve into that for the game? Maybe they spent quite a bit of time separated before and always end up back together. Maybe Merle messes with Daryl too much when they're together and Daryl takes exception. Hell, maybe they're just not that close to begin with and Daryl secretly wishes Merle would just get bit already. It should be interesting, though. Has a lot of potential.

Strategeryz0r: pat34us: Strategeryz0r: pat34us: Strategeryz0r: pat34us: kukukupo: Looks like we have our Game of the Year for 2013.

I think I'm going to spend a vacation day or two with this game.

I hate to bust everyone's bubble but I read it was delayed until 2014, it sucks becuase it was the only game I was looking foward to next year.

Is everyone so worked up because the graphics perfectly mirror the TV show or what? It looks entertaining, but I've seen so many people claiming GOTY for this thing and I just don't see a single reason why. It seems more like an XBLA release than a full blown title. And when put up against things like Bioshock Infinite, I don't get why everyone is so jazzed about it.

What am I missing here?

A South Park RPG made by a popular RPG game maker. What's not to like?

It's not that. I think it's got a reasonable chance of being pretty good. I'm just confused as to why so many people(gaming websites included) are calling this thing the most anticipated title of 2013, early GOTY contender, etc, etc. No gameplay has been shown, and the dev in charge has a reputation for middling quality. It's very perplexing to me.

And I'm not saying anyone is wrong for thinking it'll be awesome or anything. I'm genuinely curious, because it makes no sense to me.

Because nothing good is coming out next year, Bioshock, Stick of Truth abnd the normal annual updates.......That's it.

Looks like I will be playing Borderlands 2 all year.

Aliens: Colonial Marines
DmC: Devil May Cry(demo was pretty good actually!)
Dead Space 3(though I'm not happy about the coop focus)
Gears of War: Judgement
Crysis 3(looks damn fantastic)
MGS: Revengeance(stupid name, but it's MGS)
Tomb Raider
Bioshock: Infinite
Dead Island: Riptide
The Last Of Us
Company of Heroes 2
The Elder Scrolls Online
GTAV
Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2
Rainbow 6: Patriots
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Total War: Rome 2
Metro: Last Light
Watch Dogs
Xcom(FPS reboot, not the turn based one that already came out)

all o ...

Fair enough, I fully understand that games will be released next year but off that list how may are expected to be good? Nothing on that list looks even remotely interesting to me.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is looking like what we all hoped the new AvP would be.

Tomb Raider I thought would blow, the latest videos and previews are making me rethink that. It looks pretty great(and they took a few notes from Uncharted when it comes to presentation)

The Last of Us is going to be amazing. I have no doubts about that, Naughty Dog has NEVER steer me wrong.

Company of Heroes changed RTS games for me, it is the standard by which I measure land based RTS titles(Homeworld for space based Relic = masters of strategy). CoH2 I'm hoping will continue building upon the incredible foundation that is the original.

Bioshock Infinite is a no brainer.

Metro: Last Light actually is really impressing me. The first one was oozing atmosphere but needed some extra dev time. Last Light looks like what the first one should have been.

Watch Dogs, if it lives up to the hype, could be a game changer. Everything I've read about that game seems to point to, at the very least, it being exceptionally high quality.

X-Com is probably the most divisive of all those titles. On one hand you have the die hards going "that's not x-com!" But on the other you have the fact that it's Irrational developing it. A company that not only understands how to build incredible experiences, but seems to really want to respect the original while providing a new experience. I'm more than happy to give them the benefit of the doubt considering their track record.

So to answer your question, I think quite a few of them on that list have very high odds of being exceptional titles.

Made by a different studio. Infinite is made by the creators of the original.

I stand by my comment.

Fair enough, it has the most potential, but it is far from a sure thing. I don't want you thinking that I think Stick of Truth is going to be the best game ever (every other South Park game sucked) but I love RPG's and I love South Park so for me it is a no-brainer.

Oh I don't think that at all. My comments are more about why every website under the sun is acting like this thing is the biggest and best thing coming out next year. I don't get the hype, I don't get the anticipation. It looks good enough, but all this "omg best game of next year is what this is!" talk makes me raise an eye brow. Especially in light of.. well..

practically everything I listed off lol.
