It can't be reasonably explained.

Yeah and Patton Oswalt was on 'King of Queens' and for whatever reason people think he's funny.

Nathin Rabin status: still a pale imitation of Elizabeth Wurtzel

WHY?

2012-12-10 09:00:14 PM
I ignored him until I heard him on Fresh Air (with Terry Gross), and with his interview he gained my respect. I still haven't seen any of his work, but now I might.

White guys at the AV Club People with taste trying to understand the allure of Tyler Perry?

There, now we're done.

2012-12-10 09:10:24 PM
he makes movies that appeal to certain ethnic and religious groups, and since they aren't often targetted, they always show up and spend their money. its not complicated.

2012-12-10 09:12:08 PM
He is not my taste, but I can see why he is successful. He knows (and makes fun of) his audience mercilessly. But the audience is in on the joke, so it's all right.

And he is a breath of fresh air compared to the Thugs.

Tyler Perry is the film and television equivalent of James Patterson, cranking out small, digestible chunks of fluff except that he has the advantage of a built-in audience that feels like its been ignored by mainstream Hollywood forever.

Trying to intellectually analyze Tyler Perry is like trying to critique James Patterson or Thomas Kinkade.

and as to why there is a ton of mysogyny in there- he appeals to extremely christian, working class, southern black people. The idea of traditional conservative family systems built around strong men supported by subordinate women in drama's that end with a clear good beating a clear evil is exactly what they want to see.

But its hilarious when someone does.

"A Kinkade painting was typically rendered in slightly surreal pastels. It typically featured a cottage or a house of such insistent coziness as to seem actually sinister, suggestive of a trap designed to attract Hansel and Gretel. Every window was lit, to lurid effect, as if the interior of the structure might be on fire." -Essayist Joan Didion

Oh yeah, well if Tyler Perry and James Patterson are so bad then explain how Alex Cross turned out to be easily the worst movie of the year?

Oh...oh yeah, that makes sense then.

Patton Oswalt was on an episode of Burn Notice. i love that show but i hate that little troll. i put up with him up to the point where i saw him on a comedy special where him, that doosh big bird looking arsehole and a tiny dyke comedian were walking along somewhere on the streets of NJ and they had to go there. being as he's a midget i guess he just had to go for the low hanging fruit.

Tyler Perry? yesterday I'm Mom-sitting and the TV is just on in the background. Christmas specials aimed at a black audience. Holy crap, it was like hearing a blend of soap opera and COPS - and this was supposed to be a Christmas special. sure nuff, it was a Tyler Perry. I look forward to the day when there are so many black actors, producers, directors, writers, comedians etcetera that black audiences don't feel they have to show the love for black artists that suck. It's pretty obvious at this time that if you make it up on the stage and you're a brother or sister you're going to get mad props for making it onto the stage regardless of talent and thats just sad.

I agree, Jackass pretty much sums up that whole concept. I must ask though, what's with Hollywood always making movies with block comics dressed as women. I remember Chappelle talking about it.

The article makes a good point: Perry panders to a subset that prefers their fiction full of the hope of the world they cannot have where traditional gender roles are not only reinforced but completely unexamined. Which makes the latent homoeroticism within even stranger as it could be read as a conflict: it's okay to be gay, but women who can stand on their own must be utterly destroyed because they lose their humanity. It's backing a system to preach homosexual acceptance while beating down women. It's a very unique robbing Peter to pay Paul. It's just a complex power struggle to get back to an artificial normalcy that really never existed.

The allure of Tyler Perry is similar to the popularity of Christian Rock. It's popular, it's sold everywhere, but you've never met a person who listens to it.

HIs comedy is hit-or-miss with me, but Patton Oswalt is actually a pretty good dramatic actor. I'm surprised he didn't get any award nominations for "Big Fan."

Guess it must be the Denis Leary thing where he gives a good performance as long as he's not constantly trying to be funny.

But seriously white males pay more attention to him than most blacks males due to TV ads during CoCo. I have never seen one of his movies but I did watch a few TV shows when bored.
/Those few shows I saw are much better than the garbage they show on so called "educational networks"

rugman11: Trying to intellectually analyze Tyler Perry is like trying to critique James Patterson or Thomas Kinkade.

Painter of Trite. Mass-produced, feather-lite fluff, designed for collection plates, calendars and nursing homes. Warm, cozy, idyllic, pastoral - scenery so perfect and so effervescent that it's overkill. Especially when you realize how many of these he ran off the assembly line over the years. They're all the same, each one a carbon copy of the others, in form, style and composition. The more he churned out, the more they felt like parody to the point where they transcended their own uplifting warmth to invert into something ironic and disturbing. Salvador Dali would have considered Kinkade's entire body of work to be a masterpiece of sentimental absurdism.

That Kinkade wanted to capture idealism while at the same time violating basic principles of physics and lighting is a good metaphor for what's wrong with his work: It's so insincere that it's offensive to real life. Despite objects ranging from fifty feet to fifty miles away, there is no depth. Everything is a flat, multi-tonal, highlighted stroke of the same brush, betraying real perspective. There is a limited range of colors and everything is in focus. Where is the light reflecting off the snow coming from? Why does the interior of every cottage look like it is on fire? And who really lives in cottages anymore, anyway?

This is a guy claiming to be doing God's work and according to him God is safe, boring, and only just barely aesthetically pleasing. The pinnacle of mediocrity. And you just know that in an alternate Universe there was a Thomas Kinkade who didn't quite make it as an artist so he started World War III instead.

/there, how'd I do?

byron allen is the new tyler perry. anyone ever seen 'the first family?'

perry produces preachy nonsense. slight exception for 'are we there yet?' terry crews is brilliant and the token white dude is the same white dude from the chapelle's show parody of the real world. it's watchable.

Like Zach Galifinakis and Louis C.K. before him, Patton committed the Fark cardinal sin of taking jobs that actually paid well instead of just spending the next 30 years playing clubs attended only by 3 farkers and their imaginary girlfriends.

I agree with this. Tyler Perry is showing people that they can create their own entertainment outside of what Hollywood says that is allowable. That with just a little bit of money and a few flyers, it's possible to create art and have that art appeal to a wider audience. Since it's just him, his work is uneven and his musical stuff needs an arranger, but the kids coming after him is going to produce some amazing stuff.

AV Club manages to be snobs about the oddest things. You wouldn't think there could be such a thing as a gangster rap snob, but behold, Nathan Rabin, inventor of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope name.

I have one issue with Patton Oswalt, as well as David Cross, who also does this a lot. If they make a mainstream, crappy movie for a big paycheck, then it's okay, but if anyone else does it, then they're horrible, awful people who should be skinned alive, and have their wounds covered in sand.

I could even stomach that hypocrisy to a point, except both Oswalt and Cross make these kind of jokes a lot, and nerdy elitism informs a lot of their acts. It's kind of the basis for them, really. So whenever either of them go off on how Larry the Cable guy is the cancer of comedy, I think of King of Queens or Alvin in the Chipmunks, and make a jack-off motion in the air.

Larry the Cable guy is a cancer of comedy because he isn't funny. He's a midwestern Seinfeld wannabe who couldn't hack it, so he slapped on the equivalent of redneck blackface.
